Florida’s Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was required to return cryptocurrency and cover legal costs after a seizure that lacked proper legal steps.

The case, reported by Attorney Leslie Sammis of Sammis Law, involved an EU-registered brokerage that had its Kraken

$504.05M

account frozen on March 28.

Authorities from Wisconsin and Florida had traced a $20,000 fraud to the firm’s wallet. Although the company worked with both states during the investigation, its crypto, worth over $450,000 at the time, was locked without warning.

On April 9, Volusia County obtained a sealed warrant ordering Kraken to transfer 1.19 BTC

$117,098.05

to a wallet controlled by the state and convert it into US dollars.

Wisconsin also issued a separate order for 0.93 BTC but could not process crypto on its own. Instead, it relied on Florida to sell the Bitcoin and forward a check for $95,030.59.

However, Sammis later found that the Florida warrant had major flaws. It had no case number, was never filed with a court, and did not include supporting documents. Using blockchain analysis tools, she also found no link between the client’s wallet and the fraud in question.

Sammis later convinced Volusia County officials to reverse their actions. The sheriff’s office returned the remaining cryptocurrency, got back the check sent to Wisconsin, and agreed to pay the brokerage’s legal fees.

The scam that triggered the investigation began when fraudsters posed as the “Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System” and sent fake asset seizure notices.

Up to $22,500 per Participant To Be Handed Out as US County Greenlights Guaranteed Income Pilot Program: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/up-to-22500-per-participant-to-be-handed-out-as-us-county-greenlights-guaranteed-income-pilot-program-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/up-to-22500-per-participant-to-be-handed-out-as-us-county-greenlights-guaranteed-income-pilot-program-report/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 13:42:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/up-to-22500-per-participant-to-be-handed-out-as-us-county-greenlights-guaranteed-income-pilot-program-report/

A guaranteed income pilot program is launching in one US county to help those already enrolled in government aid programs pay for basic needs.

Contra Costa County in California will provide 178 people with up to $1,250 per month for 18 months, reports CBS News.

The program has just been approved by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, which previously allocated $3.25 million in county funds and another $1 million in state funds for the effort. The program will be administered by the county’s Employment and Human Services Department.

Those eligible are from four specific populations: youth transitioning out of foster care, families with young children experiencing financial hardship, low-income seniors and people on probation returning to the community after incarceration.

Participants also need to be enrolled in county-sponsored programs to be eligible, such as CalWORKs. The first payments are expected to go out on January 15th.

Says Marla Stuart, director of the county’s Employment and Human Services Department,

“I think you can provide the most, the largest percent of the budget, to the benefits themselves if you don’t have to invest in administrative overhead, advertising, applications, determining eligibility and then managing the case throughout the period.”

Board chair Candace Andersen says the program is a pilot that may result in an expanded effort, noting there are more than 300,000 people in Contra Costa County on some form of government assistance.

“Most pilots are put in place to say, ‘Hey, does this work? Should we then expand it into a bigger program that might help even more people?’ And that’s what this is.”

A guaranteed income pilot program is launching in one US county amid rising cases of homelessness.

The program, known as Stabilize Families, is backed by the nonprofit RISE Together Innovation Institute and the Community Shelter Board in Franklin County, Ohio, reports The Columbus Dispatch.

The Community Shelter Board will give 80 families a one-off cash handout of $1,500, while RISE Together Innovation Institute will offer monthly payments of $500 to 20 families for 11 months.

Data collected by the Community Shelter Board reportedly shows homelessness in Franklin County in 2024 went up six times faster than the population growth. As of January 23rd, according to the report, there were 2,556 homeless people in the Ohio county, up by 7.4% from 2024.

Community Shelter Board’s president and CEO Shannon Isom says the guaranteed income pilot program is “about dignity” and will give the beneficiaries “breathing room to stabilize, plan, and dream again.”

The report cites RISE Together Innovation Institute’s CEO Danielle Sydnor saying,

“Guaranteed income is a viable strategy to promote economic stability and well-being for residents in Franklin County.”

According to the report, Ohio State University will be involved in the guaranteed income pilot program and will conduct research on the project’s impact on beneficiaries and the community.

$13,600,000 To Be Handed To Residents in Major US County As Leaders Approve Massive One-Time Payments for Households https://earlybirdsinvest.com/13600000-to-be-handed-to-residents-in-major-us-county-as-leaders-approve-massive-one-time-payments-for-households/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/13600000-to-be-handed-to-residents-in-major-us-county-as-leaders-approve-massive-one-time-payments-for-households/#respond Sun, 20 Apr 2025 05:34:14 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/13600000-to-be-handed-to-residents-in-major-us-county-as-leaders-approve-massive-one-time-payments-for-households/

Commissioners in the second-most populous US county have green-lit large payments to residents who are struggling to make ends meet.

The Board of Commissioners in Cook County, Illinois has approved a program that will send $1,000 payments to selected households battling elevated property taxes amid a “substantial increase” in tax bills in recent years.

The Cook County Homeowner Relief Fund’s application process is expected to be launched in the summer.

“In order to be eligible, households must have an income at or below 100 percent of the Area Median Income for their respective household size.

Under these guidelines, for example, a four-person household making $119,900 or less would be eligible. Applicants must have also seen their property tax bill increase by at least 50 percent in any year since the 2021 tax year.”

The program, known as the Cook County Homeowner Relief Fund, has a total budget of $15 million. The homeowner relief fund, however, would reportedly cost $1.4 million to run, leaving $13.6 million to be distributed.

Public hearings were held with property owners beginning in September of 2024, before the approval of the Cook County Homeowner Relief Fund. According to Commissioner Bridget Gainer, the problem of ballooning property taxes in the Illinois county is severe.

“Property taxes are rising faster than homeowners’ ability to pay, forcing people to leave neighborhoods they love and undermining the best ability to build wealth – home ownership.”

The president of the Cook County Board, Toni Preckwinkle, says offering one-time payments to help in paying property taxes is, however, a stopgap measure while the leadership pursues a long-term solution.
