Albania has taken a new step in its fight against corruption by assigning an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, known as Diella, to manage its public procurement process.

According to a report by Reuters on September 11, Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is preparing to start his fourth term, introduced Diella as part of his new cabinet lineup.

According to him, this AI will take full control of awarding public tenders, the process through which the government hires private companies for state projects.

Rama emphasized that Diella is immune to pressure, bribery, or favoritism, common concerns when it comes to public funds.

The AI’s name, Diella, translates to “sun” in the Albanian language. Although the government highlighted her role in promoting fairness and transparency, it did not explain what kind of supervision or safety checks are in place to monitor her decisions or prevent misuse.

Diella was first introduced earlier in the year on Albania’s national digital services platform, e-Albania. At that time, its job was to help users complete various administrative tasks.

It provided information, responded to voice commands, and issued digitally signed documents, all while dressed in a virtual version of traditional Albanian clothing.

With Diella’s new role, the AI tool will be responsible for overseeing all steps involved in public tenders, including the selection process.

Recently, Ukraine has rolled out a new AI support tool on its government platform, Diia. How does it work? Read the full story.

Trump DOJ corruption? Fired aide alleges payments for merger approvals. https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-doj-corruption-fired-aide-alleges-payments-for-merger-approvals/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-doj-corruption-fired-aide-alleges-payments-for-merger-approvals/#respond Wed, 20 Aug 2025 21:26:21 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trump-doj-corruption-fired-aide-alleges-payments-for-merger-approvals/

A former Trump Justice Department appointee blasted some of his ex-colleagues in a speech Monday, saying they “perverted justice and acted inconsistent with the rule of law” — and he named names.

Roger Alford was a top appointee in the DOJ’s antitrust division in both President Donald Trump’s first and second terms. He and his boss, DOJ antitrust division chief Gail Slater, are associated with a faction on the right that wants tougher antitrust enforcement. They take a more skeptical view of mergers in sectors where only a few major companies are competing.

But Alford was fired last month. And now, he’s gone public about what happened, outlining what he said amounted to a “pay-to-play” scandal, where companies paid well-connected outside MAGA influencers to try to get mergers approved, and certain top DOJ officials played ball.

“For 30 pieces of silver, MAGA-in-Name-Only lobbyists are influencing their allies within the DOJ and risking President Trump’s populist conservative agenda,” Alford said. “Their goal is to line their own pockets by working for any corporation that will pay top dollar to settle antitrust cases on the cheap.”

“Perverted justice and acted inconsistent with the rule of law”

Though Alford didn’t have anything negative to say about Trump or Attorney General Pam Bondi, he pointed the finger at two officials in particular: Bondi’s chief of staff, Chad Mizelle, and Associate Attorney General nominee Stan Woodward.

Mizelle “makes key decisions depending on whether the request or information comes from a MAGA friend,” Alford said. He continued: “Aware of this injustice, companies are hiring lawyers and influence peddlers to bolster their MAGA credentials and pervert traditional law enforcement.”

The background to this is that back in January, shortly after Trump was sworn in, the DOJ’s antitrust team sued to block IT company Hewlett Packard Enterprise from buying a rival, Juniper Networks.

But in June, DOJ suddenly backed off, agreeing to a settlement that let the deal proceed with minor concessions.

This, Alford clearly believes, was because Hewlett Packard hired two outside MAGA figures to grease the wheels for them: Mike Davis (a conservative legal activist) and Arthur Schwartz (a longtime ally of Donald Trump Jr.).

“Mike Davis and Arthur Schwartz have made a Faustian bargain of trading on relationships with powerful people to reportedly earn million-dollar success fees by helping corporations undermine Trump’s antitrust agenda, hurt working class Americans, break the rules, and then try to cover it up,” Alford said in his speech.

Alford didn’t go into all the details about what happened, but Semafor has reported that Mizelle overruled Slater and Alford to push through the Hewlett Packard settlement — and Alford was fired soon afterward. (The drama spilled out into public, and even Laura Loomer got involved, as the antimonopoly advocate Matt Stoller has chronicled.)

Urging a judge reviewing the merger to dig into the matter more, Alford’s speech continued: “It is my opinion that in the HPE/Juniper merger scandal, Chad Mizelle, and Stanley Woodward perverted justice and acted inconsistent with the rule of law. I am not given to hyperbole, and I do not say that lightly.”

A DOJ spokesperson pushed back in a statement: “Roger Alford is the James Comey of antitrust — pursuing blind self-promotion and ego, while ignoring reality. He was fired from the Department, and all should treat his comments for what they are — the delusional musings of a disgruntled ex.”

What this is really all about

Over the past decade, a new antitrust movement skeptical of Big Tech and big corporations generally has gained some traction on both the left and right. Joe Biden’s FTC chair, Lina Khan, became the face of this movement for Democrats, and certain up-and-coming Republicans seeking a populist brand, such as JD Vance, professed admiration for her.

Most Republicans, though, loathed Khan, sympathizing with complaints from business leaders that she was overly scrutinizing mergers, and took the GOP’s traditional pro-corporate line.

When Trump won his second term, though, he nominated a Vance staffer, Gail Slater, as his DOJ antitrust chief. Antitrust reformers like Stoller liked Slater and took her appointment as an encouraging sign that “Trump wants to take on big tech.”

In practice, though, Trump’s administration has been most defined by its weaponization of government for shakedown tactics. Trump likes deals, and he likes getting companies (or universities) to cough up money. He likes it when people ask him for favors, and he likes asking for things from them in return. He was never truly committed to an ideological agenda of tough antitrust enforcement. And he’s fine with Big Tech, so long as Big Tech gives him what he wants.

Slater and Alford apparently didn’t get the memo and thought they’d have a free hand to enforce the law as they felt appropriate. But this earned them enemies inside and outside the administration, CBS News reported last month. There were deals to be had — and money to be made.

In his speech, Alford referred to “people inside and outside government” who “consider law enforcement not as binding rules but an opportunity to leverage power and extract concessions.”

But though Alford put the blame on those two DOJ officials, his description seems to fit Trump’s approach to governance quite well.

We don’t know whether Trump himself got involved in the Hewlett Packard matter. But, as the saying goes, the Cossacks work for the Czar.

Democrats declare ‘Anti-Crypto Corruption Week’ to counter GOP crypto bills https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrats-declare-anti-crypto-corruption-week-to-counter-gop-crypto-bills/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrats-declare-anti-crypto-corruption-week-to-counter-gop-crypto-bills/#respond Sun, 13 Jul 2025 08:02:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrats-declare-anti-crypto-corruption-week-to-counter-gop-crypto-bills/

US Democratic lawmakers, led by House members Maxine Waters and Stephen Lynch, announced on July 11 that next week will be designated “Anti-Crypto Corruption Week.”

The initiative aims to unite Democrats in opposing several pro-crypto bills that are currently under consideration in Congress, including the GENIUS Act, the CLARITY Act, and a proposed law aimed at preventing the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The push against these crypto legislations comes as Washington prepares for the “Crypto Week,” during which lawmakers hope to finalize these bills. Proponents of the proposals argue that they could reshape the crypto landscape and further cement the US’s status as a leader in the sector.

Anti-crypto corruption week

In their joint statement, Waters and Lynch argued that it may lead to fraud and entrench controversial crypto ventures linked to President Donald Trump.

According to Waters, these bills could allow bad actors to exploit the system, furthering Trump’s alleged corrupt activities that have benefited him and his allies financially.

She also criticized the legislation for lacking consumer protections and national security safeguards.

According to her:

“The irony couldn’t be more glaring: the same Republicans who rail against a government-backed digital dollar in the name of ‘freedom’ are now rushing to hand over the keys to Americans’ financial future to Trump’s illegal and corrupt crypto empire.”

Waters concluded that the bills would approve activities undermining trust in the US financial system.

She added:

“Republicans are sending a clear message to the American people that they are unwilling to stand up to the crypto lobby, and even more disturbingly, that they are too cowardly to stand up to the President. Well, Democrats are not afraid, and will spend this week reminding the public of the true cost of this corruption.”

Lynch also echoed similar views in his statement, warning that the Anti-CBDC bill could slow US research into digital currencies, giving countries like China an upper hand in the emerging technology.

He said:

“The volatile and risky nature of crypto products and the lack of investor protections will likely have devastating consequences on Americans’ financial lives, and Congress cannot allow it to undermine our traditional financial markets which are the envy of the world.”

Notably, the Democratic lawmakers’ position is consistent with their broader skepticism toward the crypto industry.

For context, Connecticut’s Democratic-majority legislature recently passed a law banning state agencies from investing in digital assets, which Governor Ned Lamont signed into law.

Nationally, prominent Democrats such as Senator Elizabeth Warren continue to voice concerns about the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, reinforcing the party’s caution towards the emerging sector

Ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee Maxine Waters (D-CA) Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-MA) announced July 11 that next week will be known as “Anti-Crypto Corruption Week” on Captiol Hill.

Democrats Push Back On GOP Crypto Week

According to the Friday notice posted on the House Financial Services Committee’s website, Democratic lawmakers will be pushing against the Republican Party’s planned “Crypto Week” in opposition to their political opponents’ mobilization to pass crypto legislation.

Specifically, Waters and Lynch called out both the CLARITY Act and the GENIUS Act by name in the notice, going so far as to call the proposed rulemaking “dangerous pieces of crypto legislation.”

The two U.S. lawmakers also took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s crypto ventures, claiming his dive into the world of digital assets is merely a part of his “evil and corrupt crypto empire.”

“Aside from lacking urgently needed consumer protections and national security guardrails, these bills would make Congress complicit in Trump’s unprecedented crypto scam – one that has personally enriched himself, his entire family, and the billionaire insiders in his cabinet, all while defrauding investors,” Waters said.

Donald Trump’s Digital Asset Ventures Questioned

Trump has garnered increased scrutiny in recent months over his affiliation with novel crypto platform, World Liberty Financial, over their new USD1 stablecoin as well as his the launch of his namesake memecoin $TRUMP.

Critics of Trump’s ties to the blockchain sector allege that his Trump-affiliated cryptocurrencies may pose ethics concerns as anyone – including those involved in foreign governments – may purchase and hold the coins.

“My Republican colleagues are eager to continue doing the bidding for the crypto industry while conveniently ignoring the vulnerabilities and opportunities for abuse that exist in crypto – especially given President Trump’s acceptance of billions of dollars in investment in his family crypto business from foreign governments and his blatant conflicts of interest,” said Congressman Lynch.
