Universal Pictures has started including warnings in its movie credits that ban the use of its content for artificial intelligence (AI) training.

The notice, which has appeared in new releases like Jurassic World Rebirth and How to Train Your Dragon, tells AI developers that the material “may not be used to train AI”.

At the same time, AI company Midjourney is defending itself in court against a lawsuit filed by major studios, including Disney and Universal. The case claimed that Midjourney helped users create unapproved images that closely resemble characters from films such as Star Wars and The Avengers.

Midjourney filed a 43-page statement pushing back against the claims. The company argued that copyright law does not give creators complete control over how their work is used.

It pointed to the principle of “fair use”, which allows some types of reuse, especially when it supports free access to ideas or transforms the original work in a meaningful way.

Midjourney also brought up an apparent contradiction in the studios’ behavior. According to its court filing, many people using the platform have email addresses from Disney and Universal.

In addition, Midjourney argued that the studios failed to properly report which specific images or links were a problem. Under US copyright law, companies usually must provide exact examples when making a takedown request.

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers recently asked the US Commerce Department to look into DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company. What did they say? Read the full story.

Authors Lose Copyright Fight as Meta’s AI Use Deemed Fair https://earlybirdsinvest.com/authors-lose-copyright-fight-as-metas-ai-use-deemed-fair/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/authors-lose-copyright-fight-as-metas-ai-use-deemed-fair/#respond Sun, 29 Jun 2025 04:17:50 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/authors-lose-copyright-fight-as-metas-ai-use-deemed-fair/

A US court has ruled in favor of Meta in a copyright case brought by a group of writers who claimed the company used their books without permission to train its artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The lawsuit was filed by 13 authors, including Sarah Silverman, Junot Díaz, and Andrew Sean Greer. They argued that Meta’s use of their books to build language models was a copyright violation.

However, Judge Vince Chhabria said in a June 25 court document that the authors did not provide enough proof that Meta’s actions harmed the market for their work. He explained that their claims lacked detail and did not demonstrate how the AI tools might reduce demand for their books or affect future sales.

Without this kind of evidence, he found the use to fall under what the law allows as “fair use”.

Still, Judge Chhabria noted that this decision should not be taken as approval of how tech companies are collecting and using copyrighted material. He stated that the ruling only applies to this specific case and should not be seen as a statement about AI training practices in general.

In his ruling, Judge Chhabria stated that AI systems can produce huge amounts of content very quickly, which could reduce the need for human-made work. If that happens, it might lower the value of creative work and discourage people from making it in the first place.

On June 23, Judge William Alsup ruled that Anthropic’s use of legally purchased books to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models was lawful. What did he say? Read the full story.

US Copyright Chief Fired After Warning AI Firms on Fair Use https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-copyright-chief-fired-after-warning-ai-firms-on-fair-use/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-copyright-chief-fired-after-warning-ai-firms-on-fair-use/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 01:23:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-copyright-chief-fired-after-warning-ai-firms-on-fair-use/

Shira Perlmutter, head of the US Copyright Office, was removed from her role by the Trump administration after releasing a report that questioned how artificial intelligence (AI) companies use copyrighted content to train their systems, according to a May 10 report by CBS News.

The Copyright Office’s newly released study warns that using protected material to make commercial products, especially if the content is accessed without permission, may fall outside the limits of fair use.

Instead of calling for immediate government action, the report suggests that the best path forward is for licensing systems to continue growing. It also mentions that if these systems fail to develop, other options like collective licensing could be considered so that rights holders are fairly paid.

Representative Joe Morelle, a Democrat on the House Administration Committee, called the firing an “unjustified power grab” and suggested it was directly linked to Perlmutter’s refusal to approve Elon Musk’s request to use large volumes of copyrighted material for AI training.

Morelle said that it was “surely no coincidence” given the events that unfolded within 24 hours of the report’s release.

Lawyer Mike Davis, who appeared to disapprove of the firing, shared a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump’s social media platform. He warned that it might lead to creators’ rights being ignored by tech companies chasing profits through AI.

Perlmutter was originally appointed by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who was also dismissed on May 9 by President Trump.

Meanwhile, the White House recently received more than 10,000 public comments on its proposed AI strategy. What did the feedback reveal? Read the full story.

Hollywood Celebs Fight AI: Paul McCartney and More Demand Copyright Protections https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hollywood-celebs-fight-ai-paul-mccartney-and-more-demand-copyright-protections/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hollywood-celebs-fight-ai-paul-mccartney-and-more-demand-copyright-protections/#respond Sun, 23 Mar 2025 12:22:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hollywood-celebs-fight-ai-paul-mccartney-and-more-demand-copyright-protections/

More than 400 figures from the entertainment industry, including Paul McCartney, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Rock, Cynthia Erivo, and Cate Blanchett, have signed a letter urging the US President Donald Trump administration to maintain existing copyright protections.

Their message comes in response to companies like Google and OpenAI, which have asked the government to loosen these rules to allow AI systems to use copyrighted content for training.

In February, the White House invited public input on AI policies that could shape the country’s approach to this growing technology.

The letter argues that while AI innovation is important, it should not come at the expense of creative industries. It highlights that entertainment and the arts provide jobs for over 2.3 million people in the US, which generates more than $229 billion in wages.

The signers warn that weakening copyright laws would affect not only filmmakers, musicians, and writers but also professionals in publishing, journalism, and research.

Furthermore, the letter, also backed by figures like Rian Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Carrie Coon, and Taika Waititi, raised concerns about changes to fair use laws. It reads:

Make no mistake: This issue goes well beyond the entertainment industry, as the right to train AI on all copyright-protected content impacts all of America’s knowledge industries.

The letter adds that giving AI companies unrestricted access to copyrighted material could harm industries that rely on intellectual property protection.

Meanwhile, AI experts Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton recently expressed concerns that AI was being developed and released without enough safety measures. What did they say? Read the full story.
