Hayden Davis, creator of the LIBRA token, has now described the crypto project as a memecoin in a recent court filing as part of a legal strategy to counter a class-action lawsuit. The American crypto entrepreneur and marketer continues to draw negative attention and remains under investigation following the highly questionable launch and crash of LIBRA in February 2025.

Davis’ Clash With US Private Investor Forces LIBRA Memecoin Admission – Report

The LIBRA project gained much popularity following public promotion by Argentine President Javier Milei on X, on February 14, 2025. The crypto token’s value soared to $5 in a few hours following its launch before plummeting to nearly $0. Since then, the nation’s leader has distanced himself from the crypto project while even authorizing an investigation into the event by the nation’s anti-corruption office.

According to local Argentine media Clarin, Omar Hurlock, a US private investor, through American law firm Burwick Law, has since initiated a class-action lawsuit against Hayden Davis and other persons behind LIBRA, including Benjamin Chow, co-founder of the Meteora platform, and Julian Peh, head of Kip Protocol.

In a 30-page defence against Hurlock’s claims of running a scam, Hayden Davis states the US investor has no evidence to back the complaints of ever purchasing tokens from him or other developers of the crypto project. In particular, Davis attacks Hurlock’s credibility to lead a class action in a case he is not a direct victim.

Furthermore, the crypto entrepreneur also publicly refers to LIBRA as a memecoin for the first time since the incident in February. Before this statement, the cryptocurrency had been previously described by all parties involved as an investment fund targeted at financing Argentine companies.

In ascribing memecoin status to LIBRA, the defendant emphasizes the speculative nature of this token while also claiming no promises were made to prospective investors. A statement from the brief reads:

Defendants provided no plans, details, or infrastructure to potential purchasers of the memecoin, nor did they provide detailed disclosures or tokenomic distribution information regarding how the funds raised would be allocated to fulfill the [allegedly] promised economic initiatives

The case is presently filed at the District Court for the Southern District of New York under Judge Jennifer L. Rochon and is scheduled for a hearing on August 19. The outcome of this lawsuit is also expected to influence the status of $250 million in frozen assets, which are linked to profits from the LIBRA project.

Price Overview

At press time, LIBRA trades at $0.01690 with its total market cap valued at $4.61 million.

British Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden has questioned the political donations made in Crypto. According to a Guardian report issued on July 18, 2025, McFadden, an intimate ally of British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, said, “While democracy funding is often a controversial area, I think it’s very important to know who is providing donations.

Important discussions about crypto regulations have been cleaned up in both the UK and the US. In the US, President Donald Trump has announced that he will accept code donations. In fact, Thumzup Media Corporation, a Donald Trump JR-backed advertising technology startup, has secured board approval to hold up to $250 million in crypto. Meanwhile, the UK government is taking steps to “protect democracy.”

“Protection of democracy is one of the government’s most important duties. The increased risk that crypto donations, and crypto will be used to lead to British politics, is a clear and current danger to democratic integrity,” said Tom Brake, director of the Unlocked Democracy Campaign Group.

Crypto companies collect user data from 2026, with large fines for false reports

The UK is implementing serial crypto reforms through HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The UK government has introduced another drastic regulatory move driven by the adoption of the Economic Co-operation and Development Organization (OECD) Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF). Starting January 1, 2026, all cryptographic companies must collect and disclose detailed user and transactional data.

“If you are offering CryptoAsset services in the UK starting January 1, 2026, you will have a new responsibility to collect and report data. HMRC” said the May 14, 2025 announcement.

All CryptoAsset service providers (both domestic and foreign platforms that serve UK clients) are required to collect and report extensive information about all users and all transactions. This includes address, country of residence, national insurance number, unique taxpayer references, and more.

It is set to prohibit Crypto purchases with credit cards and loans

If you are using a credit card to purchase Crypto in the UK, it may be numbered on that day. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has officially proposed rules to prevent retail investors from using borrowed funds to purchase cryptocurrency. This includes credit cards, personal loans, and even loans from crypto-specific lenders. However, some crypto users are worried that the UK ban will block innovation and limit access to the market.

The move is part of a broader effort to protect consumers from acquiring debts that chase unstable digital assets. And as more people are jumping into the code with money they don’t actually have, the UK’s top financial watchdogs are ringing their alarms.

The Department of the Treasury is formally taking down a new rule that expanded the definition of a broker under the U.S. Tax Code.

The rule titled “Gross Proceeds Reporting by Brokers that Regularly Provide Services Effectuating Digital Asset Sales” classified decentralized finance (DeFi) exchanges as brokers required to furnish the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with information on user transactions involving digital assets.

The rule was published in the Federal Register on December 30th during the final weeks of the Biden administration and took effect on February 28th.

In March, legislators from both chambers of Congress voted to repeal the controversial law, a move supported by President Donald Trump, who signed the bill reversing the crypto broker rule on April 11th.

The Treasury Department says the controversial rule now has no legal force or effect.

“Pursuant to the CRA (Congressional Review Act), any rule that takes effect and later is made of no force or effect by enactment of a joint resolution shall be treated as though such rule had never taken effect. Accordingly, the Treasury Department and the IRS are reverting the text of the section 6045 regulations back to the text that was in effect immediately prior to the effective date of the Final Rule.”

    Trump’s controversial memecoin dinner elicited mixed responses from attendees https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-controversial-memecoin-dinner-elicited-mixed-responses-from-attendees/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-controversial-memecoin-dinner-elicited-mixed-responses-from-attendees/#respond Sun, 25 May 2025 01:48:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-controversial-memecoin-dinner-elicited-mixed-responses-from-attendees/

U.S. President Donald Trump’s private dinner gala with the top 220 holders of his memecoin, which generated controversy from its announcement, took place on May 22. But what was touted as “the most exclusive invitation in the world” elicited mixed and wide-ranging responses from its attendees.

While some complained about the quality of the food and the lack of interaction with Trump, others appreciated the networking opportunity with the crypto world’s luminaries.

    The distinguished attendees

Tron founder and crypto billionaire Justin Sun was the top TRUMP memecoin holder at the event. He was probably also the most controversial figure attending the event.

But Sun was one of many distinguished crypto entrepreneurs around the world who attended the dinner. According to the New York Times, guests at the event included:

    The complaints

The gala dinner failed to live up to the expectations and hype for several attendees, who entered as protesters chanted “shame” outside the venue. For one, some complained about the quality of the food served and the lack of options to drink.

Nicholas Pinto, a 25-year-old whose father drove him to the event in his Lamborghini, told CNBC:

“The food sucked…Wasn’t given any drinks other than water or Trump’s wine. I don’t drink, so I had water. My glass was only filled once.”

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Pinto said that he was “very disappointed with the dinner.” He added that he was expecting to be served Big Macs or pizzas.

Pinto was also “very disappointed” with the brief appearance of Trump and the lack of any interaction opportunities. He told WSJ:

“I am very disappointed that President Trump didn’t spend more time at the event. He was not interacting with us.”

Trump arrived in a helicopter at the event around 7 pm. He then briefly greeted the top 25 holders in a separate VIP reception area while the 195 other attendees opened gift bags in the adjacent grand ballroom.

After a speech, where Trump regurgitated old talking points, he left, approximately 23 minutes after arrival. Pinto told WSJ:

“I wasn’t very impressed by the speech, to be honest. I would have liked for him to dine with us, maybe spend more time.”

For Cheng Lu, a 32-year-old crypto investor from Shanghai who was part of the top 25 attendees, things weren’t much different from Pinto. Lu told the NYT that he did not have any opportunity to speak with Trump either at the event or at the guided White House tour on Friday.

Pinto also highlighted that security at the black-tie event was lax, with no RFID-sealed bags for phones. He said:

“Once Trump left, they didn’t really worry about anything else.”

Pinto also added that the opulence of the attendees was on full display, with Richard Mille watches that cost up to $1.3 million being flaunted by at least 16 attendees. But the mood was subdued due to the fact that several of the attendees had already dumped Official Trump (TRUMP). Pinto told CNBC:

“Lots of people didn’t even hold the coin anymore. They were checking their phones during dinner to see if the price moved.”

According to a May 16 Wired report, shortly after their places were confirmed, around half of the attendees started dumping the token. The trend continued even after the event—the price of the memecoin fell by around 8% while the token balances of attendees declined from 11.3 million to 7 million

    The bright side

Not everyone was put off by dinner. Former NBA star Lamar Odom, for instance, used the event as an opportunity to promote his own memecoin, ODOM.

Russian-born crypto entrepreneur Nikita Anufrieve told WSJ:

“This is a historical moment, when the 47th President, Donald Trump, performed a speech for us. You cannot compare it to any reward that are [sic] available in the market right now.”

Anufrieve said that he treated the event as a networking opportunity, talking to about 50 people and trying to “get as many contacts as I can.”

Morten Christensen, a 39-year-old onetime poker player who now runs a crypto website, described the dinner as a “whole wild experience.” He told WSJ that the event signals that Trump is “willing to do something with the coin.” Therefore, it will provide more confidence to future investors and collectors, he added.

On the other hand, Sangrok Oh, the CEO of Hyperithm, a Tokyo and Seoul-based institutional digital asset manager, said:

“I understand there has been considerable criticism surrounding this event, but I view this as a social experiment related to crypto. And the outcomes of the experiment is something we need to observe over time.

YouTube is often tinkering with its interface, usually to the dismay of those who are subject to the experiment. Some Reddit users expressed ire over tested changes to the YouTube UI last week, but you can always find angry people on the internet. We were more interested in finding out the general feelings about the significant changes, so we polled our readers to find out.

If you missed the apparent outcry, YouTube has begun rolling out a redesigned video player interface for its web platform, replacing the decade-old design with one featuring pill-shaped controls and a cleaner video view. However, users who are unhappy with the changes point out the apparent removal of the ability to scroll on the volume bar or use keyboard shortcuts to adjust audio. The update coincides with the 20th anniversary of the platform’s first uploaded video, but how many people are unhappy with this disruption to long-established user habits?

Do you like the new YouTube video player UI on the web?

As the chart above shows, opinions on the new YouTube video player UI couldn’t be much more divided. After thousands of votes, 46% of you said you like the new UI, with almost 54% saying you don’t.

Perhaps this indecisive outcome shouldn’t be too surprising. Contrary to what some believe, Google isn’t attempting to annoy YouTube users when it makes changes to the service, and must have had reason to believe the change would be beneficial. That said, some people resist almost any change, especially tweaks to systems they have gotten used to over a ten-year timeframe. Whatever YouTube does, it’ll never please everyone.

The comments section under our news story offers more insight into why people voted as they did. On one side of the argument, reader renn444 welcomed the change, stating, “As someone with vision problems, the new UI helps me a lot, so I like it more. It looks a lot cleaner.”

Reader pu239 disagreed, commenting, “Why is it better? It increases the height of controls, reducing visual space, adds unnecessary backgrounds to the buttons, and adds silly pills.” Other commenters hadn’t experienced the changes yet, but were still grumbling about the large thumbnails test.

The controversial exchange eXch plans to close its doors in May after facing allegations that it laundered crypto stolen in the record-setting Bybit exploit earlier this year.

In February, hackers looted nearly $1.5 billion worth of Ethereum (ETH) and Lido Staked Ether (stETH) from Bybit in the largest crypto theft ever and possibly the biggest heist in world history.

The blockchain research firm Elliptic, pseudonymous on-chain investigator ZachXBT and other researchers pinned the exploit on the Lazarus Group, a prolific North Korean cybercriminal outfit known for numerous high-profile hacks on major crypto platforms.

Elliptic also said that Lazarus used eXch as part of its process to launder the stolen crypto. The exchange denied the money-laundering allegations, though it did cop to processing an “insignificant” portion of the stolen Bybit funds.

This week, eXch took to the BitcoinTalk forum to announce it was shutting down on May 1st, claiming that “friends” in the state intelligence sector confirmed the exchange is the target of an “active transatlantic operation.”

“Even though we have been able to operate despite some failed attempts to shut down our infrastructure (attempts that have also been confirmed to be part of this operation), we don’t see any point in operating in a hostile environment where we are the target of SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) simply because some people misinterpret our goals. Starting from the date of the merger with a new management team this month, and as a result of some urgent meetings, the majority of us voted to cease and retreat instead of going against strong winds, because none of us want to cause any harm to innocent people or this forum.”

Virgil Griffith, a former Ethereum developer who worked on the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), has been released from prison on parole and relocated to a halfway house.

Updates posted on X on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, disclosed that Griffith is now starting his return to civilian life after serving some of his sentence for violating US sanctions.

Ethereum Developer’s Prison Release Confirmed By Sources

Brantly Milegan, executive director of Ethereum Identity Foundation, broke the news with a photo of Griffith and his parents outside the prison. Alexander Urbelis, ENS general counsel and part of Griffith’s legal team, confirmed his release from FCI Milan in Michigan.

Griffith was arrested in November 2019 after speaking at a cryptocurrency conference in North Korea. Prosecutors claimed his presentation provided information that could help North Korea evade sanctions and launder money.

From 63 Months To 56: The Sentence Journey

In 2022, Griffith was sentenced to 63 months in prison and meted a fine of $100,000 after pleading guilty to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In July 2024, US District Judge Kevin Castel lowered his sentence to 56 months, citing him as a first-time offender.

    Crypto Return Faces Serious Hurdles

Griffith himself starts a several-year probation term. His attorneys are fighting to transfer him from the halfway house to home confinement, but returning to regular life is hindered.

The Department of Commerce placed severe export restrictions on Virgil that will extend until 2032, Urbelis explained. These limits could block his return to the cryptocurrency field.

Presidential Pardon Possibility Under Trump Administration

Before joining Ethereum, Griffith earned a Ph.D. from Caltech and created WikiScanner, a tool tracking anonymous Wikipedia edits. He also worked with Aaron Swartz on Tor2web.

According to Urbelis, Griffith is seeking a pardon from US President Donald Trump. Trump has previously granted clemency to others in crypto-related cases, including Ross Ulbricht and Arthur Hayes.

The case has triggered debate about sharing open-source information versus helping sanctioned nations. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has supported Griffith, even signing a petition calling for his release in 2023.

    Solana co-founder apologizes for controversial ad targeting marginalized groups https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-co-founder-apologizes-for-controversial-ad-targeting-marginalized-groups/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-co-founder-apologizes-for-controversial-ad-targeting-marginalized-groups/#respond Thu, 20 Mar 2025 00:09:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-co-founder-apologizes-for-controversial-ad-targeting-marginalized-groups/

Solana Labs co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said he is “ashamed” about downplaying the impact of a recent Solana Foundation advertisement, calling it “mean and punching down on a marginalized group.”

Yakovenko made the statement in a social media post on March 19 and expressed gratitude to those in the Solana (SOL) ecosystem who called it out immediately.

    He said:

“I am grateful for the ecosystem devs and artists that immediately called it what it is both publicly and privately. You are the only silver lining to this whole mess.”

He further committed to ensuring that the Solana Foundation remains focused on its core mission of decentralization and open-source software development rather than engaging in cultural debates.

His response signals an effort to realign the foundation’s priorities and address community concerns.

    Controversial ad sparks backlash

The Solana Foundation faced significant criticism following the release of a promotional video titled “America is Back — Time to Accelerate.”

The ad, posted on March 17, depicted the US as a man in therapy who struggles to focus on technological advancements like crypto and space travel due to societal discussions on pronouns and gender identity.

However, the ad was widely condemned for injecting political discourse into the crypto space.

Andrew Thurman of the Jito Foundation, the entity behind the largest project by total value locked on Solana, emphasized the importance of neutrality in blockchain projects.

After facing mounting criticism, the Solana Foundation deleted the video within nine hours of its release. However, by that time, it had already garnered over one million views.

Following the backlash, Solana Foundation Vice President of Technology Matt Sorg clarified that only a few individuals were involved in the ad’s production. He responded to concerns from Cinneamhain Ventures partner Adam Cochran, who questioned how the ad could have passed multiple stages of approval without objections.

Cochran further noted that transgender developers have significantly advanced open-source cryptography and security software, arguing that the ad failed to recognize the industry’s history of meritocratic contributions.

Sorg explained that most of the production process had been outsourced to external teams and clarified that the ad did not represent the Solana community.

The Solana Foundation has removed an advertisement from its official X account following criticism over its political messaging on gender identity.

The ad, posted on March 17 to promote the Solana Accelerate conference, attracted negative commentary from the crypto community for its references to gender and pronouns.

Solana Co-founder Disapproves of the Campaign

The video in question depicted a man, referred to as “America,” speaking with a therapist about his thoughts on innovation and crypto. However, the professional dismissed his concerns and suggested he focus on coming up with a new gender and on pronouns instead.

As the conversation continued, the man delivered a monologue set to patriotic music, declaring his intention to build on-chain, reclaim innovation, and invent technologies rather than genders.

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, who recently disagreed with the foundation’s Executive Director Lily Liu over the now-rejected SIMD-228 proposal, has since distanced himself from the campaign. He stated that a previous marketing effort, the “Maren ad,” had been better. While the original post has been deleted, multiple users have reposted it on the platform.

    Community Backlash

Several industry figures criticized the initiative for its handling of gender identity and its political tone. Cinneamhain Ventures partner Adam Cochran pointed out that it took Solana nine hours to delete the post. He also noted that major figures in its ecosystem initially supported the ad before removing their tweets and engagement with it.

“They approved this, supported it and celebrated it,” he said. “They rolled it back because it hurt their business, not because they thought it was wrong.”

Blocknative operating chief Sean O’Connor called the initiative “tone-deaf,” especially following recent policy changes in the U.S. President Donald Trump revoked executive orders from Joe Biden aimed at preventing discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation.

Tyler Bench, CRO of on-chain governance platform Tally.xyz, described the campaign as highly problematic and likened it to previous Coinbase advertisements but with a more extreme tone. Anneri van der Merwe, product lead at Base, criticized it as offensive and pandering, stating that it contradicted Solana’s previous messaging about inclusivity.

Nicolas Pennie, co-founder of Solana development platform Helius, argued that virtue signaling in marketing efforts would always be ineffective, regardless of political ideology. On his part, DoubleZero operating chief David McIntyre questioned why the platform did not take a more positive approach instead of mocking social issues.

Some observers believe the intention was to attract people by causing controversy. Reka, CEO of DEX protocol Avnu.Fi suggested that the marketing was designed purely for attention, stating that it prioritized controversy over creativity.

Kelsier CEO Hayden Davis, the brain behind the controversial Libra Memecoin, also launched Melania Memecoin, saying the team aimed for both tokens as soon as the contract address was released.

Libra was released on Friday, and a tweet of support from Argentine President Javier Milei says it will support small businesses in the country. His backtrack to the project prompted a 95% entry into the value of the token.

Snipering is when people use bots to purchase memokine just seconds after a smart contract is published. Snipe funds wallets are often the majority of profits.

The token “is not a rug pull,” Davis claimed in an interview with Crypto fraud hunter Coffee Zilla. “It’s just that the $100 million I’m sitting on my custodian account is a miserably wrong plan.”

    Profits created from Melania liquidity

It turns out this wasn’t Davis’ first rodeo. He was also involved in the launch of Melania Memocoin linked to our First Lady Melania Trump.

“I’m happy to share the truth. You’re asking me a lot of questions that put me at risk, and I’ll answer them,” Davis said when he asked about Melania. . “I was part of it. I think the team wanted to snipe it because it was the size of Trump’s sniper. We were definitely not a big sniper. Melania’s team. I didn’t make any money from it. Please turn T to zero.”

Davis appeared to contradict himself shortly after facing on-chain data. “We didn’t exchange liquidity () we didn’t say there was no money sold. There’s a difference between exchanging liquidity and selling liquidation.”

Melania is currently trading at a market capitalization of $625 million after debuting on January 20th at $2.1 billion.

    Refunds…for insiders

The controversy surrounding Libra continued as Davis sent Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy a $5 million refund after Portnoy lost money on Libra.

During a conversation with Coffeezilla, Portnoy said he knew about the project a few weeks before its release and bought the token 10 minutes after Milei’s tweet.

Portnoy knows Libra very quickly and has since received a refund, which causes the ghost of insider trading. But Davis dismissed that idea.

“Insider ideas are always bullshit because all the memo coins I’ve known, invested, or part of them, are people who know who are profiting… People building deals.

“(It’s) similar to other businesses in the world. So I think it’s the angry cryptography people because it’s a bit of a bullshit and it has an unfair advantage.”

Coindesk contacted Davis and Portnoy for comment but did not receive a reply at the time of publication.
