What you need to know

  • Philips Hue announces partnership with Sonos and its Voice Control feature, bringing hands-free assistance to users for their lighting needs.
  • Users can turn lights on or off with their voice, activate scenes, and alter the brightness and color temperature of devices.
  • Philips Hue also states this update, which will arrive in September, takes user privacy into account, meaning your voice never leaves the device.

Philips Hue is announcing a new partnership and future update that consumers can expect to improve their lighting experience.

In a press release by Philips Hue, the company announced that it has partnered with Sonos to bring its Voice Control to its selection of lighting devices. The post states this integration with Sonos Voice Control will give users the ability to “switch lights on or off, dim or brighten, and activate scenes with their voice.” Regarding lights, the email to Android Central earlier today (Sep 4) states users can adjust the brightness and color temperature of their Philips Hue lights with Voice Control.

This update will also bring smart plug control capabilities via mic-enabled Sonos products.

Philips Hue highlights a privacy-focused update between it and Sonos. The company states your voice is “processed entirely on the device.” It says what you’re saying is not sent to the cloud for processing and that there’s no “recording,” nor is an internet connection required to utilize Voice Control. Nathan Hart, senior product manager at Sonos, adds, “We built Sonos Voice Control to make controlling your music with your voice faster and easier than ever before, all with the privacy of your data staying right on your speaker.”

This update is looking at a September launch in U.S. English and French for users worldwide. However, Philips Hue states Voice Control will skip out on China, and it’s unclear if users in the region will see it in the future.

Sonos had a huge update earlier this year, but for its Ace headphones for the home. The free update in June brought “dual listening” to users watching the same content at home on the TV. Sonos stated users could listen to the same broadcast as audio is “synced” for both parties, thanks to their Sonos Soundbar. Additionally, TrueCinema grabbed more “realism.” The company stated its Ace headphones can “understand” your environment to “perfectly tune” your audio.

Elsewhere, the headphones also grabbed an update for its ANC (active noise cancellation). Now, the Ace headphones will consider the user’s glasses, hair, and hat in “real-time” to better block out sounds that would take you out of your audio content.

Just 10 Wallets Control Majority Of Ethereum Supply: How Do Other ETH Tokens Compare? https://earlybirdsinvest.com/just-10-wallets-control-majority-of-ethereum-supply-how-do-other-eth-tokens-compare/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/just-10-wallets-control-majority-of-ethereum-supply-how-do-other-eth-tokens-compare/#respond Thu, 04 Sep 2025 05:26:01 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/just-10-wallets-control-majority-of-ethereum-supply-how-do-other-eth-tokens-compare/

On-chain data shows over half of the Ethereum supply is held by just 10 addresses. Here’s how other ETH-based tokens like Shiba Inu stack up.

Shiba Inu, Uniswap, & Ethereum Are Among The Most Centralized ETH Tokens

In a new post on X, on-chain analytics firm Santiment has talked about how the different assets in the Ethereum ecosystem line up against each other in terms of the amount of supply that’s concentrated on the top 10 wallets.

Below is the chart shared by Santiment that shows the trend in this metric for eight cryptocurrencies over the past few months.

Ethereum Supply

Looks like SHIB is at the top of the list at the moment | Source: Santiment on X

From the graph, it’s visible that 51% of the Ethereum supply is owned by the 10 largest wallets on the network. This is more than most of the other ETH-based tokens on the list.

The two coins that are ahead in this metric are Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Uniswap (UNI). The latter is only marginally ahead of ETH with a value of 52.2%, but the former is significantly ahead at 62.3%.

Generally, a cryptocurrency’s supply being heavily concentrated on just a few hands doesn’t tend to be a constructive signal, as it means only a few players are needed to move the market.

Beyond market dynamics, supply centralization has another drawback: it potentially weakens the network security. Chains like Ethereum’s run on a consensus mechanism called the Proof-of-Stake (PoS). Under this system, validators called stakers have to lock up a stake in order to receive a chance at adding the next block to the chain.

The higher is a validator’s stake, the higher is the chance that they get picked. If a single staker crosses the 51% supply threshold, they can, in theory, gain total control over the blockchain.

This type of attack doesn’t exist on Bitcoin, where the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism is employed instead. In PoW networks, miners compete against each other using computing power. Here, too, however, if a validator gains control over 51% of the network computing resources, they can mold BTC to their will.

Considering that Ethereum has just 10 holders controlling 51% of the supply, an attack on the network is possible if these entities come together. The chances of it happening, though, are quite slim.

Still, the fact the likes of ETH, SHIB, and UNI are notably centralized on just a few holders could be something to watch for. In contrast, some other tokens in the ecosystem like USDC (28.6%), DAI (31%), and Chainlink (31.5%) are in a healthier zone in terms of this metric.

ETH Price

Ethereum has seen a surge of almost 4% over the last 24 hours that has taken its price to the $4,380 mark.

network.

The coin climbed to a market value of $3 billion within 40 minutes of launch, but dropped back to about $1.05 billion, according to Nansen.

The token was promoted by Ye on X, where he posted the contract address and linked to the Yeezy Money website. The site calls YZY “a new economy, built on chain” and presents it as the currency for transactions inside its system, “YZY Money”.

The launch came with several warnings. The website says users in restricted countries cannot access it and highlights the risk of losing all invested funds. In February, Ye had warned that he once turned down $2 million to back a scam.

Developers used an unusual setup by creating 25 contract addresses and randomly choosing one as the official token. The goal was to make it harder for bots to grab coins instantly at launch.

Still, Lookonchain reported that only YZY tokens were added to the liquidity pool, which means the team could adjust supply and sell at will.

Conor Grogan noted that insiders initially held about 94% of the supply, with one multisig wallet alone controlling 87% before funds were spread to other wallets.

google nest thermostat review google home app temperature dial 1

Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Google is preparing to add hot water controls to the Home app, as confirmed by the Google Nest and Home Chief Product Officer.
  • The feature is in final testing and will roll out in the near future. It will let you control hot water from the app if your thermostat supports it.
  • It follows last week’s rollout of temperature scheduling for older Nest thermostats, further reducing reliance on the legacy Nest app.

Google has been steadily migrating functions from the old Nest app to the Home app, with full temperature scheduling for older Nest thermostats now rolling out. That update, spotted by Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman last week, was a big deal as it was the last major reason many people still needed the old Nest app.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

But the migration isn’t quite finished. In a reply to Mishaal on X, Anish Kattukaran, the Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest, confirmed that hot water control is in “final testing” and will be included in “one of our next few releases.” His remarks came after readers of Mishaal’s article commented that hot water control was still missing, and that the new schedule interface felt like a downgrade compared to the old Nest app.

Google CPO Confirming Hot Water Controls Comonig to Home App X

Hot water control lets you do things like set a schedule for heating water, quickly trigger a boost, or switch it on and off manually. That’s if your thermostat is connected to a compatible hot water system. Until now, that functionality has required the older Nest app.

The move fits into Google’s broader effort to consolidate everything in the Home app, reducing the need for the legacy Nest app and streamlining controls across its smart home ecosystem.

Qubic Claims Majority Control of Monero Hashrate, Raising 51% Attack Fears https://earlybirdsinvest.com/qubic-claims-majority-control-of-monero-hashrate-raising-51-attack-fears/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/qubic-claims-majority-control-of-monero-hashrate-raising-51-attack-fears/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 12:49:13 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/qubic-claims-majority-control-of-monero-hashrate-raising-51-attack-fears/

Qubic, a project led by former IOTA co-founder Sergey Ivancheglo, says it has secured more than 51% of Monero’s global hashrate, a milestone that, if true, gives it the ability to reorganize blocks, censor transactions, and attempt double-spends on the privacy-focused blockchain.

Ivancheglo framed the move as a stress test to help the Monero community prepare for future network threats, but the announcement has triggered sharp debate among developers and security experts.

jwp-player-placeholder

A 51% attack occurs when a single entity or coordinated group controls a majority of a proof-of-work network’s hashrate. Ethereum Classic suffered multiple reorganizations in 2020, resulting in millions of dollars in losses, while Bitcoin Gold faced similar assaults in 2018 and 2020.

Smaller networks like Verge have also been targeted, demonstrating how concentrated hashing power can destabilize and entire cryptocurrency network.

Monero, which uses the CPU-friendly RandomX algorithm, has long prided itself on resisting ASIC centralization. Qubic’s “useful proof-of-work” (uPoW) model repurposes Monero mining rewards by converting XMR into USDT, then using the proceeds to buy and burn QUBIC tokens, a deflationary mechanism that doubles as a liquidity sink for its own ecosystem.

From mid-May to late July, Qubic’s share of the network jumped from less than 2% to over 25%, at times topping pool rankings.

Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet warned on X that Monero “appears to be in the midst of a successful 51% attack,” citing signs of a major chain reorganization, with several other industry experts like SlowMist founder Yu Xian expressing their doubt over Qubic’s economics.

Whether the events mark a hostile takeover or simply a stress test, XMR has responded negatively, dropping by 6.65% in the past 24 hours to compound a 16% decline over the past week.

A fresh look at on-chain studies shows the United States far ahead in Bitcoin holdings. Investors and analysts are watching closely as countries and companies build out their positions. The sheer size of America’s stash is reshaping conversations about scarcity and value in the crypto world.

Geographic Breakdown Shows US Dominance

According to analysis from Fred Krueger, the US holds nearly 8 million BTC out of almost 20 million in circulation. That adds up to 40% of all existing coins.

Based on reports, a $120,000 valuation per BTC would put America’s holdings at around $936 billion. At the same time, US Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of $6 billion in July. It was the third-strongest month ever for these products, trailing only February and November 2024.

Supply outside America is much smaller. India comes in second with 1 million BTC, or 5% of the supply, worth about $120 billion at the same price point. Europe follows at 900,000 BTC (4.6%), valued at $108 billion.

China’s government holds roughly 194,000 BTC (1%), mostly from seizures, pegged at $23.3 billion. Together, Latin America and the rest of Asia each control about 400,000 BTC (2%), valued at $48 billion apiece. Africa and other regions combine for 300,000 BTC (1.5%).

Corporate Giants Hold Big Stakes

Reports have disclosed that public companies in the US are key players in the Bitcoin game. Strategy leads by a mile with 628,791 BTC on its books. Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) sits next with 50,000 BTC, while XXI Capital holds 43,514 BTC.

Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company has 30,021 BTC, and Riot Platforms keeps 19,225 BTC. US President Donald Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. makes the list too, owning 18,430 BTC. That mix of companies spans from miners to financial services, showing how varied corporate interest has become.

India And Europe Keep Growing

Data shows India’s crypto surge continues despite a murky regulatory landscape. Most of the country’s holders are retail investors with small balances, but the sheer headcount places the country ahead of Europe.

In Europe, a blend of retail and institutions drives adoption. Still, growth here has been steadier than in India’s near-100% compound annual rate (CAGR) from 2018 to 2023—versus about 8% for traditional payments. That difference highlights crypto’s unique pull among Indian users.

Meanwhile, Bitbo’s recent chart also sheds light on national-level reserves. It shows over 200,000 BTC linked to the US and a similar figure for China.

The UK ranks third with 61,000 BTC, Ukraine fourth at 46,000. Smaller players like Bhutan, El Salvador, and Finland hold between 5,000 and 10,000 BTC.

Dormant Whale Sells $80,000 BTC, But Bitcoin Bulls Still In Control https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dormant-whale-sells-80000-btc-but-bitcoin-bulls-still-in-control/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dormant-whale-sells-80000-btc-but-bitcoin-bulls-still-in-control/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 02:16:11 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dormant-whale-sells-80000-btc-but-bitcoin-bulls-still-in-control/

A Bitcoin whale from the early 2010s, holding coins mined or acquired in Bitcoin’s infancy, recently awakened and sold 80,000 BTC. The sale was handled by Galaxy Digital, which executed the transfer of over 80,000 BTC (worth $9 billion) on behalf of this client, who is described as a “Satoshi-era” investor

Despite this massive sale and the volatility that came after, Bitcoin has managed to steady and the ensuing price action shows that bulls were more than prepared to absorb the sell shock.

Bitcoin Dips To $115,000, Bulls Quickly Bought The Dip

News of the $9 billion Bitcoin sale initially caused price volatility. Bitcoin’s price had recently been trading around $119,000, so the sudden influx of sell orders caused a short-lived pullback. On July 25, as reports of Galaxy’s whale sale spread, BTC/USD swiftly fell to around $114,000 to $115,000.

The sheer size of 80,000 BTC (over 0.4% of total supply) hitting the market had the potential to trigger panic. Indeed, there were signs of profit-taking and higher exchange inflows in the days surrounding the sale. This, in turn, led to a 3.5% drop, which is one of Bitcoin’s steepest intraday dips in weeks, temporarily breaking below the $115,000 support level.

However, it soon became clear that Bitcoin’s bulls were more than prepared to absorb the shock. The price decline bottomed out in mere hours. By the end of that same day, Bitcoin had rebounded above $117,000, and it was trading back in the mid-$117,000.

This rapid recovery demonstrated remarkable liquidity and depth in the Bitcoin market. “80,000 BTC, over $9 billion, was sold into open market order books, and Bitcoin barely moved,” observed crypto analyst Joe Consorti, showing how quickly buyers stepped in to counter the selling pressure.

Image From X: Joe Consorti

Back in earlier years, a sell order of this magnitude could have triggered a double-digit percentage price crash. By contrast, the ecosystem in 2025 handled it with surprising ease. “The entire sale has been fully absorbed by the market,” noted Bitcoin analyst Jason Williams.

What’s Next For Bitcoin Price?

With the whale’s 80,000 BTC sale now largely in the rearview mirror, the next step is looking ahead to where Bitcoin might go from here. The fact that the market digested a $9 billion sell-off with only minor turbulence has many observers feeling even more bullish about Bitcoin’s trajectory. “We’re going so much higher,” Jason Williams noted.

It’s a sentiment shared by several crypto analysts on X, who see the quick recovery as evidence of strong upward momentum. The consensus among bulls is that new all-time highs could be on the horizon in the coming months. Bitcoin already notched a record around $123,000 on July 14, but analysts are still calling for new highs above $130,000, $150,000, or even higher.

Meta’s breakthrough wants to let you control AR glasses just by moving your fingers https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metas-breakthrough-wants-to-let-you-control-ar-glasses-just-by-moving-your-fingers/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metas-breakthrough-wants-to-let-you-control-ar-glasses-just-by-moving-your-fingers/#respond Fri, 25 Jul 2025 12:41:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metas-breakthrough-wants-to-let-you-control-ar-glasses-just-by-moving-your-fingers/

What you need to know

  • Meta is experimenting with a wristband that reads your muscle signals, so you can type or control stuff just by thinking about moving your fingers.
  • The tech pairs with Meta’s Orion AR glasses, which look like regular specs but overlay digital stuff in your real-world view.
  • It’s still a prototype (and pricey), but Meta says a more practical version is in the works.

Imagine scrolling through your social media feed, sending a message, or skipping a song without tapping a button or resorting to voice commands, just a subtle twitch of your hand. That’s the wild promise of Meta’s latest research, and it’s not some distant sci-fi dream.

Thanks to a new study published in Nature, we’re getting a sneak peek at how augmented reality (AR) glasses could soon read your intentions before you even fully act on them.

Meta’s Reality Labs has been quietly working on a tech called surface electromyography (sEMG), which sounds complicated but boils down to one simple idea: detecting the tiny electrical signals your muscles send when you even think about moving.

How it works: wristwear that reads intention

Meta sEMG hand gestures

Instead of waving your arms around or using a bulky controller, you slip on a lightweight armband. Trained on data from thousands of people, the system deciphers minute electrical patterns that the brain sends to your fingers.

One test user typed at over 20 words per minute just thinking the stroke motions. The team smashed the key hurdles: generalization across users (so it doesn’t need per‑person calibration), consistent gesture recognition, and handwriting decoding, all embedded in a wristband-style interface.

The big deal here is speed and subtlety. Current AR controls rely on voice, hand tracking (needs big gestures), or clunky remotes. In its Nature paper, Meta showed off Orion, a prototype wristband that predicted gestures with scary accuracy, even when people barely moved. It worked while typing on a keyboard or holding a coffee without needing to pause your life to interact with tech.

Meta sees this fusion of AI, sEMG wristband, and AR glasses as the natural next step beyond smartphones.

Why this matters

The tech is a big step forward for interacting with devices, especially for people with limited mobility since it doesn’t require any physical movement to trigger input. It also makes using tech feel more natural and less effortful.

That said, it’s still early days. Orion glasses reportedly cost around $10,000 per unit and aren’t available to the public yet. The wristband, while extremely promising, is still in prototype phase with no clear timeline for a commercial launch.

But Meta says it’s working toward more affordable, consumer-ready versions of both, and the progress so far suggests it’s serious.

IUD birth control insertions can be painful. Doctors are finally paying attention. https://earlybirdsinvest.com/iud-birth-control-insertions-can-be-painful-doctors-are-finally-paying-attention/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/iud-birth-control-insertions-can-be-painful-doctors-are-finally-paying-attention/#respond Sun, 13 Jul 2025 16:23:49 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/iud-birth-control-insertions-can-be-painful-doctors-are-finally-paying-attention/

IUDs have been a promising breakthrough in birth control, offering both convenience and effectiveness, and their use has exploded over the past few decades. But that progress has often come with some (painful) trade-offs. Vox senior reporter Allie Volpe has been digging into why medicine has been slow to catch up to the pain that IUD insertions can cause and doctors’ plans to make the process for more palatable for patients in the future.

It is a big reproductive rights story, at a time when those rights are increasingly under threat. I sat down and chatted with Allie about it.

Allie, are IUDs becoming more popular? What do people like about them?

They’re definitely more popular. Just over 6 million people, or 8.4 percent of contraceptive users between the ages of 15 and 49, use IUDs. It’s actually the fourth most popular form of birth control. No. 1 is tubal ligation or, as people refer to it, getting your tubes tied. The pill is No. 2, condoms are No. 3, and IUDs are No. 4. That’s a huge increase from the mid-‘90s when just 1 percent of birth control users used IUDs.

People really like the IUD. It’s a set-it-and-forget-it kind of thing. Once you get past the act of placing it, you have it for anywhere from three to 10 years, depending on the type you have. Both do the same thing: They prevent the sperm and egg from meeting.

A lot of people report less cramping on their periods, lighter periods, or even no periods in general. That’s a huge draw for people who often have painful periods or endometriosis. It’s a good way to treat those things.

I think a lot of people have the perception of IUDs as a quick, painless insertion that’s not really a big deal. Is that accurate?

It depends on who you talk to, right? It is quick. It is all over within a matter of minutes unless you’re getting anesthesia, which would make the process longer.

And for some people, it’s historically not been all that uncomfortable. But for others, it’s really uncomfortable. Pain is very personal, and it’s hard to pinpoint what pain actually is. Some people are like, “Yup, didn’t really feel it.” Others are like, “I’ve had multiple children, and this is more painful than childbirth.”

What we’ve been seeing over the last couple of years is those people coming on social media talking about their experiences with painful IUD insertions.

Why do you think that misconception persists? Why do even doctors misunderstand the pain that their patients are going through?

Women’s pain in medicine has long been minimized. There’s been reporting over the last couple of years about medical gaslighting, not just in gynecological procedures but across the board. Women will come in with a problem. And for decades, centuries, they’ve just been written off as being hysterical.

Specifically, when it comes to IUDs, as more people got them, you started to hear more stories about these being very painful. It’s a numbers game — more people get them, more people are going to have problems — but also a medical history game.

You’re writing about this now because things do seem to be changing. What’s going on?

One of the OB-GYNs I talked to said, “I’ve been placing IUDs for like 37 years. It’s not like I didn’t mention that it would be painful, but I just tried not to bring it up. Because if a patient expects something’s going to be painful, it’s going to be more painful than they really thought.” These conversations about pain were not really happening until recently.

Within the last year, the CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists both released recommendations telling doctors to talk to their patients about pain management during IUD placement.

For a while, there just wasn’t really good research that pointed to methods that might help during this procedure because the pain can come at multiple points. But these groups are urging doctors to talk to their patients about not only taking ibuprofen to manage the pain after the procedure but also using topical creams or an anesthetic shot during the procedure to reduce discomfort.

What questions should patients be asking their doctor?

All of the OB-GYNs I talked to really stressed this: Talk to your doctor before your appointment. Because if you walk in the day of, there’s not really a lot they can do. So, as you’re making this appointment, discuss your concerns with your doctor. Tell them if you’re concerned about pain or if you have any past history that might make this procedure more difficult for you. Ask, “What can you offer me?” Ask as many questions as you want.

If you don’t feel satisfied with the options they have — like if you really want a paracervical block but your doctor doesn’t offer it — ask if they have recommendations for another provider that will. Then start to talk through a plan with your provider. What medications will they give you pre-appointment? Some doctors now are giving people Xanax to chill out before the IUD insertion. They will probably often tell you to take ibuprofen beforehand. Ask what they will use during the procedure. Make sure you have that clear plan written out ahead of time.

If your doctor isn’t taking your concerns seriously, they’re blowing you off, or they don’t offer pain management that meets your standards. Some of the experts I talked to recommended reaching out to a hospital affiliated with a university. They have a higher chance of having a provider that uses some of these pain management methods. Others recommended searching for someone who’s trained in complex family planning. That means they have received additional training in abortion and contraceptive care, so they might also have more pain management options.

Alex Gladstein, the chief strategy officer at Human Rights Foundation, shared how Bitcoin

is helping people push back against authoritarian control.

Speaking at the Bitcoin Policy Summit in Washington, DC, he explained that this digital currency gives individuals a way to protect their money from being frozen, monitored, or devalued by their governments.

According to Gladstein, Bitcoin is especially effective when used without linking personal identity to it. In such cases, he said, it becomes much harder for authorities to track someone’s financial activity.

He also stated:

If you’re self-custodying your Bitcoin, governments can’t delete or freeze your stuff, and they certainly can’t hyperinflate you.

Gladstein gave an example during Ukraine’s protests against then-president Viktor Yanukovych in 2013. Many protestors suddenly lost access to their bank accounts.

At the time, Bitcoin was still relatively unknown and trading at around $100. The Human Rights Foundation was uncertain about its reliability but decided to try sending Bitcoin directly to those on the ground.

Gladstein said the result was a success since activists received funds even when other systems had failed.

The Human Rights Foundation works to defend civil liberties worldwide, particularly in countries with limited freedoms. Gladstein, who joined the organization in 2007, views Bitcoin as another tool to help people avoid financial control and censorship.

Genius Group recently announced plans to use any future lawsuit winnings to reward investors and purchase more Bitcoin. What did the company say? Read the full story.
