Consumer-staples stocks are some of the best-known names on Wall Street. Walmart, Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, and PepsiCo are all legendary American companies. What’s more, most of us have at least one of their products in our homes right now.

Yet what about Costco (COST -0.20%)? It’s a relative newcomer compared with many companies in the consumer staples sector, but there’s no denying its impact and influence. Is it a buy? Let’s find out.

Getting to know Costco

Let’s start by answering two central questions about the company: What does Costco do, and how large is it?

To take the second question first, Costco is one of the world’s biggest retailers. The company operates over 900 warehouse stores across 14 countries, with the majority of locations in the United States. It boasts a market cap of around $400 billion, making it the second-largest stock in the consumer staples sector.

The key feature of Costco’s business model is its membership strategy. The company limits entry to its stores to members only, thus gaining a significant amount of revenue from membership fees.

In 2024, Costco generated $4.8 billion in revenue from membership fees alone, accounting for approximately 2% of its total revenue. While that figure might seem small on a percentage basis, the membership revenue is crucial, as it accounts for the bulk of Costco’s profits. Indeed, most of the company’s $1.9 billion in net income stems from its high-margin membership fees, enabling it to maintain low retail prices.

The benefits and risks of owning Costco stock

There are several bullish reasons to own Costco stock.

First of all, the company’s business model gives it a unique competitive advantage within the retail sector. Most stores need shoppers — and lots of them — to generate even a little bit of profit. As noted earlier, that’s not necessarily the case for Costco. The bulk of its profits come from membership fees — whether those members turn up to shop or not.

Second, the company isn’t just a retailer; it has its own private-label products, sold under the “Kirkland” label. Roughly one-third of all sales at Costco are Kirkland products, which generate more profit for the company than other products.

Finally, the artificial intelligence (AI) boom could deliver massive improvements for a company like Costco, which operates on relatively tight margins. For example, over the last 10 years, it has had an average operating margin of around 3%. In recent quarters, that has increased to 4%. This figure could improve even further in the coming years as the company introduces new technologies, including humanoid robots, as well as AI-driven inventory management and logistics.

On the flip side, trade and tariff concerns loom over Costco. Many of the products sold at any given warehouse originate abroad, making them susceptible to tariffs. In addition to trade, consumer spending can quickly dry up, particularly if the labor market weakens or inflation once again picks up. All of these macroeconomic concerns pose risks for the company and its shareholders.

Finally, Costco operates in a highly competitive environment. Deep-pocketed rivals like Walmart and Amazon are constantly circling, looking to take customers and market share from it whenever possible.

Is Costco stock a buy now?

The simple truth is that Costco isn’t a stock for every investor. It isn’t cheap; shares trade at a price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 53, which is far higher than most consumer staples stocks. But the company does have appeal thanks to its business model, which offers a far more reliable form of revenue than most retailers can count on. Moreover, if Costco uses AI-powered tools in a smart way, its margins could widen, generating much more profit.

If you’re a growth-oriented investor, you may want to consider Costco stock. If you’re a value- or income-oriented investor, you may be best served elsewhere.

U.S. Consumer Sentiment Craters in First Post-Tariff Read, but Crypto Is Holding Up https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-s-consumer-sentiment-craters-in-first-post-tariff-read-but-crypto-is-holding-up/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-s-consumer-sentiment-craters-in-first-post-tariff-read-but-crypto-is-holding-up/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 18:09:49 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-s-consumer-sentiment-craters-in-first-post-tariff-read-but-crypto-is-holding-up/

Traditional U.S. assets are going haywire as U.S.-China trade tensions continue to rattle global markets, now coupled with fresh data of tumbling sentiment towards the U.S. economy and mounting inflation concerns.

The most recent University of Michigan survey, published on Friday, found that consumer sentiment fell to 50.8 from 57.0, nearing the most depressed level in three years and far below that seen during the 2020 Covid shutdowns. Year-ahead inflation expectations surged to 6.7%, up from 5% in the prior month and the highest read since 1981.

On the back of the data, investors resumed selling long-term U.S. government bonds and the greenbacks, two assets traditionally considered as safe havens. The 10-year Treasury yield soared above 4.55% during U.S. morning hours, up more than 50 basis points in just a week. Meanwhile the dollar index (DXY) sank below 100 to a three-year low. Gold, meanwhile, hit a fresh record of $3,240 per ounce.

After a wildly volatile past few sessions, U.S. stocks were trading in a far tighter range on both sides of unchanged on Friday. At press time, the Nasdaq was higher by 0.6%

Meanwhile, cryptocurrency markets were moving higher, with bitcoin (BTC) holding just above $82,000, gaining 4% over the past 24 hours. The broad-market CoinDesk 20 Index was up 3%, with altcoin majors Solana’s SOL, Avalanche’s AVAX leading with 6% gains.

Signal or noise?

While some macroeconomic analysts are fearful that the recent surge in government bond yields is threatening the future outlook of the U.S. economy, others believe investors are reading too much into short-term market swings.

“U.S. dollars and U.S. government debt, two of the market’s most liquid safe haven categories, are going haywire,” Noelle Achison, analyst and author of the Crypto is Macro Now newsletter, said in a Friday note. “This is not the case for other safe havens, however, just those directly tied to the U.S.”

“I believe that it is much more likely that recent sharp moves in these asset classes is due to highly leveraged market participants being forced out of positions than due to fundamentals,” said billionaire investor Bill Ackmann in a post on X.

“Technical factors are driving the dramatic market moves,” Ackman continued. “As a result, markets have become increasingly unreliable as short-term indicators of the impact of policy changes.”

JPMorgan Chase Sees One Stock Market Index Outperforming S&P 500 Over Next 15 Years Amid US Policy Uncertainty, Declining Consumer Confidence https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jpmorgan-chase-sees-one-stock-market-index-outperforming-sp-500-over-next-15-years-amid-us-policy-uncertainty-declining-consumer-confidence/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jpmorgan-chase-sees-one-stock-market-index-outperforming-sp-500-over-next-15-years-amid-us-policy-uncertainty-declining-consumer-confidence/#respond Sat, 05 Apr 2025 22:58:56 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jpmorgan-chase-sees-one-stock-market-index-outperforming-sp-500-over-next-15-years-amid-us-policy-uncertainty-declining-consumer-confidence/

Bank behemoth JPMorgan Chase says one stock market index looks primed to pull off a reversal and outperform the S&P 500 in the next decade.

In a new investment strategy note, JPMorgan analysts Andrew VanWazer and William M. Smith say that the S&P 500 has meaningfully outshone the MSCI EAFE Index over a period of about 16 years, but that may start to change.

The MSCI EAFE Index tracks the performance of the stocks of large and mid-cap firms in Europe, Australasia and the Far East. Investors use the index as a benchmark for the performance of international equity portfolios.

VanWazer and Smith say,

“Since mid-2008, the S&P 500 has beaten the MSCI EAFE Index by a sizable margin, delivering average annual returns of 11.9% versus 3.6% through December 2024.”

But JPMorgan says that US market exceptionalism is now starting to crack, particularly in the tech sector, following China’s announcement that artificial intelligence (AI) startup DeepSeek had launched a model that can compete against America’s finest AI platforms.

“As soon as the news about DeepSeek broke, for example, the US market’s relative valuation to EAFE dropped from 55% to 49% – since then, it has declined further, to 39% (as of March 11th).”

According to the JPMorgan analysts, uncertainties surrounding US economic and foreign policies, souring consumer confidence, increasing inflation due to Trump’s tariffs and the potential resolution of the Ukraine war could serve as catalysts for a shift in market leadership.

“JPMorgan Asset Management’s Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions (LTCMAs) forecast that EAFE stocks may outperform US stocks by 1.4% (8.1% versus 6.7%) over a 10- to 15-year investment horizon. Many investors have been skeptical of that prediction, but recent market events have underscored how vulnerable US equities may be to higher tech-stock volatility, the threat of trade tariffs and declining US consumer confidence.”

California Government Shuts Down 26 Different Crypto Scam Websites, Uncovering $4,600,000 in Consumer Losses https://earlybirdsinvest.com/california-government-shuts-down-26-different-crypto-scam-websites-uncovering-4600000-in-consumer-losses/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/california-government-shuts-down-26-different-crypto-scam-websites-uncovering-4600000-in-consumer-losses/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 23:51:44 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/california-government-shuts-down-26-different-crypto-scam-websites-uncovering-4600000-in-consumer-losses/

The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) says it has shut down 26 cryptocurrency scam websites and identified $4.6 million in consumer losses, officials announced Monday.

In a new announcement, the DFPI says the crackdown is part of a broader initiative to combat increasing crypto-related fraud in the state, utilizing the department’s “Crypto Scam Tracker” to identify fraudulent schemes based on consumer complaints.

Says DFPI Commissioner KC Mohseni,

“As crypto scams evolve, DFPI’s Crypto Scam Tracker helps empower consumers to stay vigilant.

It is a vital part of our enforcement strategy and role as a financial regulator, educator and enforcement agency. We urge all Californians to exercise caution with unknown platforms, verify website domains to avoid fraudulent imitations, and stay wary of crypto recovery scam sites. Staying informed and reporting scams to the DFPI strengthens the Crypto Scam Tracker, making it an even more effective tool in protecting consumers.”

Officials reportedly processed over 2,600 complaints, uncovering scams ranging from fake Bitcoin (BTC) mining operations to deceptive crypto gaming platforms and fraudulent job offers. The investigation also identified seven new scam types, highlighting hackers’ evolving tactics.

Says Attorney General Rob Bonta,

“As scammers grow increasingly sophisticated and calculated, so must our enforcement.

Scammers can use deception and emotional manipulation to take advantage of people looking for connections. While there is much work to be done, I want to take a moment to celebrate the hard work of my team, who took action to protect consumers by shutting down these fake cryptocurrency websites last year. I would also like to thank our state partners at the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation for their collaboration. I urge Californians to be vigilant and protect their finances: Do not send money to anyone you have never met in person.”

Investigators also noted the prevalence of “pig-butchering” scams, where fraudsters manipulate victims into investing in non-existent cryptocurrency projects. Such schemes have contributed significantly to the $9.9 billion in global crypto scam losses reported in 2024.

Senator Warren Slams Elon Musk and President Trump for Gutting Consumer Watchdog https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-warren-slams-elon-musk-and-president-trump-for-gutting-consumer-watchdog/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-warren-slams-elon-musk-and-president-trump-for-gutting-consumer-watchdog/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2025 00:39:33 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-warren-slams-elon-musk-and-president-trump-for-gutting-consumer-watchdog/

US Senator Elizabeth Warren is speaking out against efforts to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency she helped create in 2007.

She has criticized both President Donald Trump and Elon Musk for their role in cutting support for the agency, which protects consumers from financial misconduct.

On February 13, up to 100 CFPB employees were laid off after acting CFPB head Russell Vought, appointed by President Trump, blocked new funding. This decision followed the agenda of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency’s Workforce Optimization Initiative (DOGE), which aims to reduce government spending.

In a February 12 interview with Mother Jones, Warren stated:

The CFPB was created by Congress, and Congress — not Elon Musk, not Donald Trump — is the only one that can shut it down.

She argued that big banks have opposed the agency from the beginning because it prevents them from making money through deceptive practices. According to Warren, the CFPB has helped recover at least $21 billion for consumers who were affected by financial scams.

Warren believes Musk and President Trump’s motives go beyond budget cuts. She suggested that weakening the CFPB helps distract from inflation concerns while also making it easier for Musk to push his vision for X.

She noted that Musk has faced financial losses with X and is working to turn it into a financial platform that handles users’ personal financial data. “He is moving to get the CFPB out of the way just before he launches his money platform,” Warren said, comparing it to a bank robber firing security before entering a bank.

Meanwhile, on January 16, the CFPB faced a lawsuit against two technology organizations, TechNet and NetChoice. What happened? Read the full story.
