High fees have made life difficult for travelers through these Dark Forests. The Pools of Mem once clouded, now clarified by the filter of 1559, reveal that they are not deep enough to sustain.

Legends tell of a society flourishing under the abundance brought about by DankShard, of giant Roll-Ups subsisting on fields of nourishing Data Blobs, each supporting their own fractal nutrient layers.

To summon DankShard, our guides point us to a Ceremony. All members of the Lands of Ether and abroad are encouraged to contribute. Each will add their unique contribution to the collective and in doing so, illuminate the path forward. 🕯

Overview

The KZG Ceremony is a coordinated public ritual which will provide a cryptographic foundation for Ethereum scaling efforts like EIP-4844 (aka proto-danksharding). These types of events are also known as “Trusted Setups,” famously used by Zcash to bootstrap the chain’s privacy features. However, they can also be used to support scaling mechanisms, as Ethereum plans to do.

Proto-danksharding requires a new cryptographic scheme: KZG Commitments. These will generate a “structured reference string” (SRS) which is needed for the commitments to work. An SRS is secure as long as a single ceremony participant successfully conceals their secret.

It’s a multi-party ceremony: each contributor creates a secret and runs a computation to mix it with previous contributions. Then, the output is made public and passed to the next contributor. The final output will be included in a future upgrade to help scale the Ethereum network.

Why it is important

Your participation has meaningful impact beyond the technical output of the Ceremony itself and the scaling mechanisms it would enable.

Here, the broader Ethereum community has a rare opportunity to contribute directly to core protocol development. In fact, the Ceremony credibility now and maintaining it long into the future depends on many contributions from a number of differentiated paths.

As we build our own infrastructure, we remind ourselves of what we hope Ethereum will bring to the world: accessible protocols anyone can use or contribute to. This is engagement in the practice of collective construction, the maintenance of our community ideals. Our summoning manifests new meaning for a changing world.

How to participate

There are four main ways for the Ethereum community can help build out this important infrastructure (ordered by technical difficulty, low to high):

  1. Browser interfaces

    • create and contribute your own randomness through your preferred browser
    • The main resource for information and participation is ceremony.ethereum.org. Make sure you are at this URL and not another one! There may be phishing/impersonation attempts
    • can be through the hosted interface or on IPFS
    • participants will need to provide an Ethereum address (which has sent at least 4 transactions as of 2023/01/13) or Github account to prevent spam contributions.

  2. Command line implementations

    • if you’re comfortable using a command line, check out some of the CLI implementations to contribute from your local machine

  3. Generate entropy in a unique way

    • You can generate some randomness using some unique & crazy method and use one of the above methods to add it to the ceremony. (If, for some reason, you need more time for your contribution, reach out to ceremony@ethereum.org)
    • eg. in 2018 as part of the Zcash Sapling ceremony, Ryan Pierce and Andrew Miller used a geiger counter and an artifact from Chernobyl to generate entropy in an airplane – link
    • Funding available: Apply here

  4. Write your own implementation

    • Lots of effort has gone into making writing your own implementation for the ceremony as simple as possible, (some have even done it in an afternoon). Check out the comprehensive ceremony specs.
    • If you really want to convince yourself that the secret hasn’t been leaked, consider rolling your own BLS12-381 implementation. You only need G1 and G2 integer multiplication and incorrect contributions will simply be rejected by the Sequencer, so you cannont harm the ceremony.
    • If, for some reason, you need more time for your contribution, reach out to ceremony@ethereum.org
    • Funding available: Apply here

Timeline

The project has been in development since mid-2022: explore the full timeline here. The main areas of work included an implementation of the underlying cryptographic components, the Sequencer, and an interface to support browser based participation. These efforts saw broad ecosystem engagement, with contributions from dozens of teams and individuals: these include a few teams within the Ethereum Foundation (Protocol Support, Privacy & Scaling Explorations (PSE), Devops, Eth.org, and Research) Worldcoin, and independent contributors (names below!).

The first contribution period will last for two months, running Friday the 13th until March 13th 2023. Following that, there will be a special contribution period for bespoke implementations and unique entropy generation which may require additional support.

After both of these are concluded, the Sequencer will revert to accept general contributions until EIP-4844 is ready to be scheduled for a network upgrade.

At this point, the Sequencer will stop accepting new contributions and produce its final output. There will be at least one public verification that this is the correct output – individuals are also invited to verify this as well using simple scripts like this one.

FAQs

Here are a few more questions that people commonly have.

Do I need to have registered beforehand to contribute?
Nope! You just need an Ethereum address that has sent at least 4 transactions before Jan 13 2023.

How long does it take to participate?
Participating itself is very quick, less than a minute, but it might take longer to wait for your turn. Everyone trying to contribute gets put in a lobby together and the next person to contribute is chosen at random.

What needs to go wrong for the ceremony to break?
The ceremony has a “1-of-N” trust assumption, which means that only a single participant in the entire ceremony needs to have not revealed their secret input for everything to be secure. This means that to break it, every single participant would need to collaborate to extract their secret and recombine it or there would have to be a bug in every single implementation.

See the full list of FAQs at ceremony.ethereum.org.

And a huge shout out to Nico Serrano, Geoff Lamperd, Chiali, and Takamichi Tsutsumi from Privacy & Scaling Explorations, Remco Bloemen, Marcin Kostrzewa, Grzegorz Åšwirski and Philipp Sippl from Worldcoin, Rafael Matias, and Parithosh Jayanthi from EF DevOps, in addition to Kevaundray Wedderburn, Marius Van Der Wijden, Daniel Knopik, Ignacio Hagopian, Antonio Sanso and Paul Wackerow among many others for doing an incredible amount of work to enable this Ceremony.

KZG Ceremony Grant Round https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/#respond Sat, 12 Apr 2025 12:50:44 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/

The Protocol Support team is organizing a grant round to support the upcoming Ethereum KZG Ceremony.

The KZG Ceremony is a coordinated public ritual that will provide a cryptographic foundation for Ethereum scaling initiatives like EIP-4844. Learn more about the Ceremony and participate in the test version at ceremony.ethereum.org. If you’d like funding support to contribute at a deeper level, there are two ways to qualify:

  • writing your own implementation
  • submitting entropy generated by non-traditional sources or through a unique process

→ APPLY BY JAN 31 or learn more below

Writing your own implementation

The best way to avoid a bug affecting the entire ceremony is to have as many different implementations as possible. This eliminates the possibility for single points of failure due to software implementation bugs, and reduces other correlated risks. To that end, we’re interested in funding different implementations, especially ones that feature:

  • custom / bespoke BLS implementations
  • auditable code
  • easy to use interfaces
  • good randomness generation
  • unique languages & compilers
  • implementations ready for use early in the contribution phase (which starts early Jan and runs for ~2 months)

This ceremony has specifically been designed to be as simple to contribute to as possible, and we’d encourage everyone to take a look at the specs.

Our suggested funding requests for basic >> fully featured implementations ranges from 500 and up to 10k USD.

Unique contribution methods

Another way to help assure that the the final output of the Ceremony is unbiased is to collect entropy (randomness) and ensure its destruction in a creative manner. We welcome proposals that:

  • collect unique forms of entropy
  • contributes this entropy to the Ceremony
  • destroys the entropy afterwards
  • documents the above in a credible/verifiable manner (e.g. video proof, a blog post with pictures, detailed written records)

Submit proposal

Anyone who thinks they could achieve some of the above points is encouraged to apply to this grants round, as an individual or with a team.

Grants will be awarded on a case-by-case and rolling basis. You may enter more than one proposal as long as each proposal is unique and meets the requirements.

→ APPLY BY JAN 31

Requirements

  • Proposals must be in English
  • Work must be open source
  • Proposals should aim to be complete before the end of the general contribution period

Selection criteria

Surprise us with your creativity! Here are a few selection criteria considerations to help guide your proposal:

  • Uniqueness of proposal
  • Quality of work and experience of contributors
  • Clarity, conciseness and organization of the proposal
  • Contributions that help a non-technical audience gain insight into the ceremony: why is it important and how does it work

Deadline

Submit by 31 Jan 2023 to be considered! We will follow-up regarding your submission by email. The general public contribution period will likely start in early January and run for two months, followed by the special contribution period which is specifically for the projects funded in this grants round.

See the timeline here, with the understanding that it may shift in the future.

KZG Ceremony Special Contributions https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-special-contributions/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-special-contributions/#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2025 11:23:19 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-special-contributions/

The Special Contribution Period for the KZG Ceremony ran 01-16 April 2023. This allowed participants to contribute in ways that may not have been possible in the Open Contribution period. While the Ceremony only needs a single honest participant to provide a secure output, Special Contributions provide additional assurances beyond a standard entropy contribution:

  • computing over the entropy in an isolated environment (eg. on an airgapped machine, wiping and physically destroying hardware) means that it’s unlikely for a malicious entity to have extracted the entropy at any point.
  • detailed documentation (explore links below) attached to real reputations are unlikely to all have been coopted or faked by a malicious coordinating entity. The records are available for future observers to explore.
  • different hardware and software limits correlated risk
  • differentiated entropy generation (eg. measuring an explosion) prevents the Ceremony output being compromised by some failure in the regular entropy generation (eg. the hosted interface)
  • contributions involving large groups of people are harder to fake than those with only one person. This allowed participants to contribute in ways that may not have been possible in the Open Contribution period. For example, needing more time than the typical slot or a unique method of generating entropy that included a larger group.

This post is a public record of the Special Contributions with information on methodology, where to find them in the transcript, and links to documenting media.

04 – Dog Dinner Dance Dynamics

@saint-rat fed their dog, Charlie, biscuits which they had scatted over the floor. They then used a python script and computer vision to track the location of Charlie and the biscuits as he ate them. 05 – CZG-Keremony – a pure JS KZG ceremony client

CZG-Keremony is a KZG ceremony client written entirely in JavaScript by the DSRV Labs team. Under the hood, it uses @paulmillr’s [https://github.com/paulmillr/noble-curves](noble-curves BLS implementation), so this is an end-to-end contribution done in pure JS. rootwarp.eth and @kim201212 performed an airgapped contribution on a RaspberryPi 2 before destroying the SD card.

12 – KZGamer – summoning Dankshard with a dice-tower

Justin Florentine built a dice tower that could both collect entropy for the ceremony and help determine the outcomes of his table-top games. The dice tower was a sealed box which rolled the dice before collecting them in a sealed chamber in which they were photographed by a Raspberry Pi (and camera). Then computer vision was used to read the dice which were used to determine the success/failure/damage of a given roll while adding the dice values to an internal entropy accumulator. A trapdoor then opened to return the dice to the player. By the end of the game, 1024 bits of entropy had been collected and the SD card used in the Pi was burned until destruction.

13 – Catropy

Proof of Cat or Catropy is a project to collect entropy from cats playing with a ball. This was done by embedding a custom PCB with an ESP-32 microcontroller and an MPU-6500 6-axis IMU into a knitted ball and handing it to cat (or human). The ESP-32 would then collect data from the accelerometers and gyroscopes, hash it into an entropy accumulator and serve that entropy over WiFi to the server performing the PoT calculations. Visit proofof.cat for details on the multiple contributions, hardware, software, a video of the contribution, and how this project went further to support cat shelters.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the special contribution period of the KZG Ceremony!

If you participated in the Ceremony at any point, stay tuned for ways to participate in the public verification of the final transcript and POAP claiming before EIP-4844 goes live.

Wrapping up the KZG Ceremony https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wrapping-up-the-kzg-ceremony/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wrapping-up-the-kzg-ceremony/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 06:22:38 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wrapping-up-the-kzg-ceremony/

The KZG Ceremony was the largest multi-party computation of its kind (by number of participants). Through an open, accessible process, it produced a secure cryptographic foundation for EIP-4844.

Learn more about how the Ceremony worked in Carl Beekhuizen’s Devcon talk: “Summoning the spirit of the Dankshard”

As the Dencun upgrade approaches, this post will serve as a comprehensive record of outcomes and people that brought the Ceremony to life in 2023.

Outcomes and Methods

The Ceremony ran for 208 days: from Jan 13 13:13 UTC 2023 until Aug 08 23:08 UTC 2023

141,416 contributions made this the largest setup of this kind at the time of publishing.

Contributors were required to sign-in via Github or authenticate using an Ethereum address for spam prevention.

  • 132,021 (93.36%) used Sign in with Ethereum
  • 9,395 (6.64%) used Github

As additional spam prevention, Ethereum addresses were required to have sent a certain number of transactions (also referred to as “nonce”) before the start of the Ceremony at block 16,394,155 2023/01/13 00:00 UTC. This requirement was modified throughout, depending on the needs at that time.

  • Jan 13 – March 13: nonce 3
  • March 13 – April 01: no new logins, but the lobby was allowed to clear out, ie. anyone already logged-in was able to complete their contribution.
  • April 01-16: public contributions closed to accommodate Special Contributions
  • April 16-25: 128
  • April 25-May 8: 64
  • May 8-25: 32
  • May 25 – June 27: 16
  • June 27 – Aug 23: 8

To prevent bots or scripts from interrupting honest contributors, the process was set up to blacklist any accounts with excessive logins/pings. To reset honest accounts accidentally added to the list, the blacklist was cleared four times throughout the contribution period.

Please note that we do not recommend using KZG contributions as a reliable list of unique identities e.g. for airdrops. While the sign-in and nonce requirements encouraged honest entropy contributions, these were ultimately minor impediments to actors wanting to contribute multiple times. Analysis of the transcript and onchain activity clearly show that many contributions came from linked addresses controlled by single entities. Fortunately, because these contributions were still adding entropy, it doesn’t detract from the soundness of the final transcript output.

Verifying the transcript

8ed1c73857e77ae98ea23e36cdcf828ccbf32b423fddc7480de658f9d116c848: is the sha-256 hash of the final transcript output.

The transcript is 242 MB, and is available on GitHub in the ethereum/kzg-ceremony repo or via IPFS under the CID QmZ5zgyg1i7ixhDjbUM2fmVpES1s9NQfYBM2twgrTSahdy.

There are several means of verifying the transcript. It can be explored and verified on ceremony.ethereum.org, or with a dedicated verification script written in rust.

Learn more about the checks implemented here in Geoff’s blog post: Verifying the KZG Ceremony Transcript.

There was a commemorative POAP NFT which could be claimed by contributors who logged in with their Ethereum address. The design of the POAP matches that of the original hosted interface, and includes the hash of the transcript in the border (8ed…848). To date, over 76k NFTs have been claimed by participants. Anyone who verified the transcript output was also able to tweet as social proof of success: see recent verification tweets here.

As noted above, we do not recommend using the list of minted POAPs as a strong anti-sybil signal, eg. for airdrop eligibility.

Special Contributions

April 1-16 2023 was the Special Contribution Period for the KZG Ceremony. This allowed participants to contribute in ways that may not have been possible in the Open Contribution period.

While the Ceremony only needs a single honest participant to provide a secure output, Special Contributions provide additional assurances beyond a standard entropy contribution:

  • computing over the entropy in an isolated environment (eg. on an air-gapped machine, wiping and physically destroying hardware) means it’s unlikely for a malicious entity to have extracted the entropy at any point
  • contributions involving large groups of people are harder to fake than those with only one person

See the original Ethereum blog post which documents the 14 special contributions: details on methodology, where to find them in the transcript, and links to documenting media.

  • Cryptosat: entropy from space
  • The KZG Marble Machine: 3d printed marble machine
  • Mr. Moloch’s Ephemeral Album II: a day-long musical adventure
  • Dog Dinner Dance Dynamics: a good boy get dinner
  • CZG-Keremony: a pure JS KZG ceremony client
  • Improvised Theatre: unpredictable improv
  • A Calculating Car: Self-driving car collects data
  • A noisy city: Sydney whispers its stories
  • Exothermic Entropy: chemicals go boom
  • The Sferic Project: lightning never strikes in the same place twice
  • The Great Belgian Beer Entropy Caper: recording a night of beer with a friend
  • KZGamer: summoning Dankshard with a dice-tower
  • Catropy: cats continue being integral to the internet
  • srsly: an iOS KZG Ceremony client
