Malware phishing

VirusTotal has discovered a phishing campaign hidden in SVG files that create convincing portals impersonating Colombia’s judicial system that deliver malware.

VirusTotal detected this campaign after it added support for SVGs to its AI Code Insight platform.

VirusTotal’s AI Code Insight feature analyzes uploaded file samples using machine learning to generate summaries of suspicious or malicious behavior found in the files.

After adding support for SVGs, VirusTotal found an SVG file that had zero detections by antivirus scans, but whose AI-powered Code Insight feature detected using JavaScript to display HTML, impersonating a portal for Colombia’s government judiciary system.

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is used to generate images of lines, shapes, and text through textual mathematical formulas in the file.

However, threat actors have begun increasingly using SVG files in attacks, as they can also be used to display HTML using the element and execute JavaScript when the graphic is loaded.

In the campaign discovered by Virustotal, SVG image files are used to render fake portals that display a phony download progress bar, ultimately prompting the user to download a password-protected zip archive [VirusTotal]. The password for this file is displayed in the fake portal page.

“As shown in the screenshots below, the fake portal is rendered exactly as described, simulating an official government document download process,” explains VirusTotal.

“The phishing site includes case numbers, security tokens, and visual cues to build trust, all of it crafted within an SVG file.”

BleepingComputer found that the extracted file contains four files: a legitimate executable from the Comodo Dragon web browser, renamed to be an official judicial document, a malicious DLL [VirusTotal], and what appears to be two encrypted files.

If the user opens the executable, the malicious DLL will be sideloaded to install further malware on the system.

After detecting this initial SVG, VirusTotal identified 523 previously uploaded SVG files that were part of the same campaign but had evaded detection by security software.

The addition of SVG support to AI Code Insights was crucial in exposing this particular campaign, as VirusTotal noted that the use of AI makes it easier to identify new malicious campaigns.

“This is where Code Insight helps most: giving context, saving time, and helping focus on what really matters. It’s not magic, and it won’t replace expert analysis, but it’s one more tool to cut through the noise and get to the point faster,” concludes VirusTotal.

Coinbase presents a darkly comic take on the state of the UK with ‘Everything Is Fine’ campaign https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-presents-a-darkly-comic-take-on-the-state-of-the-uk-with-everything-is-fine-campaign/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-presents-a-darkly-comic-take-on-the-state-of-the-uk-with-everything-is-fine-campaign/#respond Sun, 03 Aug 2025 10:50:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-presents-a-darkly-comic-take-on-the-state-of-the-uk-with-everything-is-fine-campaign/

Crypto advertising is often characterized by big promises and technological jargon. Yet, Coinbase’s “Everything Is Fine” campaign stands out for its wicked humor, cultural savvy, and unapologetic take on inflation, the housing market, and the general state of the United Kingdom in 2025.

Released on Thursday, Coinbase’s dark satire was quickly spotlighted by Ad Age for its wit and originality, marking a creative shift in how financial brands tackle the everyday anxieties facing consumers.

Coinbase presents a satirical mirror on financial reality

Created in partnership with the agency Mother and directed by the acclaimed Steve Rogers, “Everything Is Fine” coincides with a moment of heightened public awareness about economic instability.

The commercial opens with reassuring narration (“Everything is fine”), but the imagery starkly and comically tells a drastically different story: a leaking roof collapses, houseplants wilt, wallpaper peels, and rats scurry around amid the garbage. Each visual is a metaphor for inflation, the state of the economy, and the fragility of financial security, realities that traditional institutions rarely confront so openly.

Unlike most crypto ads, “Everything Is Fine” doesn’t shout about technological utopia or imminent riches. Instead, it leans into the quiet dread and surreal comedy people feel when their money seems to be shrinking in value while daily life gets more expensive. The result is a campaign that’s instantly relatable and eerily memorable.

Creative strategy: humor and honesty

Instead of scaring viewers or bombarding them with technical jargon, Coinbase and its creative team use deadpan humor and universal symbols of decline (filthy streets, dirty clothes) to capture what so many consumers feel: that official reassurances don’t always match their lived experience.

Perhaps the most on-point moment of the ad is the part where an affluent couple in a convertible pulls up, saying:

“We’re off to Dubai, it’s time to jump ship.”

This is a commentary on the exodus of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) from the UK, with an estimated 16,500 millionaires leaving the country in 2025 so far, according to Henley & Partners. These figures mark the steepest annual increase in millionaire outflows ever recorded, more than doubling the number from the previous year, with many opting for friendlier pastures like Portugal or Dubai.

The commercial unsurprisingly sparked a lot of comments from the crypto community. Former What Bitcoin Did podcast host, Peter McCormack, congratulated Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, saying:

“This is brilliant.”

As a Brit based in Bedford, UK, and now hosting The Peter McCormack show, which dives into the issues affecting the country, if anyone has a finger on the pulse of UK society, it’s McCormack.

“Everything Is Fine” exemplifies a new phase of advertising in crypto, where the best campaigns don’t simply explain blockchain; they reflect culture, poke fun at the absurd, and use storytelling to build trust, making Coinbase feel radically more human than competitors still pitching dreams.

Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign: How the ads became a national conversation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/#respond Sat, 02 Aug 2025 03:00:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/

Declaring that an actor has great jeans should technically be a boring way to sell denim. And yet, an American Eagle ad featuring Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney and some poorly conceived wordplay has broken everyone’s brains.

Last week, the mall brand unveiled a series of ads featuring Sweeney sporting their fall collection. One video shows her filming herself on the floor with a dog; another depicts her fixing the engine of a car. All of them end with a booming, male voice declaring “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” with the copy displayed in large font.

The spots that caught the internet’s ire are arguably the most provocative, each an obvious riff on Brooke Shields’ infamous 1980 Calvin Klein commercial, in which the then-15-year-old actor recites facts about genetics (“certain genes may…fade away,” Shields notes) while posing in the company’s denim. The Sweeney ad plays on the same jeans/genes pun, but in a much clumsier fashion and in a very complicated cultural landscape.

“My body’s composition is determined by my genes,” Sweeney starts in one video that’s since been deleted from American Eagle’s social media. The camera starts to zoom in on her chest before she lightly scolds the operator. “Hey, eyes up here.” In another, she says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color.” The camera pans to Sweeney’s eyes, and she says, “My jeans are blue.”

The same pun is used in a poster that reads “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” with the word “genes” crossed out above it. It immediately raised questions about the language of the ad, as well as its blonde-haired, blue-eyed messenger: Are we supposed to want pants or Aryan features?

In its most innocent interpretation, it reads as passe in its use of a “conventionally attractive” spokesmodel. Many, however, have deemed the American Eagle ads a racist dog whistle, some even calling it Nazi propaganda. Meanwhile, voices on the right, including the White House, have celebrated the ads as a middle finger to liberals and “woke.”

The ads are…weird. Why bother buying the jeans if you don’t have the genes it celebrates? Plus, Sweeney’s role in it, given the partisan nonsense she’s been drafted into in the recent past, raises an eyebrow. American Eagle has since clarified its intentions with the ads, stating that the marketing was solely meant to highlight the jeans. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,” read an Instagram statement on August 1. Sweeney has yet to respond.

Regardless, the whole kerfuffle says less about Sweeney herself — or even American Eagle’s marketing team — than about the politically fraught state of media in the US.

A lightning rod on the left and a symbol — voluntary or not — for the right

To comprehend the layers of the controversy, one has to understand the politically charged and paradoxical nature of Sweeney’s image and career thus far.

After landing supporting roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects, Sweeney received her big break on the HBO teen drama Euphoria in 2019 as self-destructive teenager Cassie Howard. Her role on the show, which often sees her character nude or wearing cleavage-baring tops, has contributed to much of Euphoria’s seedy reputation, while also shaping Sweeney’s bombshell image. The show also helped launch her as an aspiring “prestige” actor; her performance earned critical praise, as well as an Emmy nomination in 2022. She earned an additional nomination that year for her role in HBO’s The White Lotus.

This acclaim was followed by the release of the 2023 romantic-comedy Anyone But You, which she starred in opposite Glen Powell and co-produced. The Shakespeare adaptation was marketed with PR-orchestrated rumors about Sweeney and Powell’s relationship and went on to earn over $200 million globally. By all accounts, it seemed poised to be the next big movie star, with all the makings of a savvy entrepreneur.

Then, around 2024, things started to get strange — and loudly. That year, Sweeney hosted Saturday Night Live. The episode featured several jokes about her breasts, and she wore a low-cut dress during “goodnights.” This elicited multiple op-eds from conservative outlets claiming that Sweeney, and her willingness to participate in gags about her own sex appeal, signaled a return to both a pre-MeToo climate and “traditional” beauty standards. In fact, this wasn’t the first time Sweeney had been linked to conservative ideology, correctly or incorrectly. In 2022, she sparked outrage for photos she posted from her mother’s Western-themed birthday party, which showed relatives wearing MAGA hats and Blue Lives Matter gear in the background. She claimed they were merely ironic costumes, an explanation that failed to quell questions about her political leanings.

Today, the idea that Sweeney might be an undercover agent for MAGA — and voluntary bait for incels — is somewhere between a conspiracy theory and a meme. (No matter that she has supported progressive causes, like Black Lives Matter, appeared at the GLAAD Awards, and said she believes “that a woman has the right to be able to decide over her body.”) Her endorsement work includes brand deals with the country-inspired HeyDude and personal care company Dr. Squatch. By the time she released a soap supposedly made from her own bathwater with the latter company, her critics seemed exhausted by her whole schtick.

“I think her and her camp probably think that they’re playing into [her sexuality] with a wink and a smile and being self-aware about her being consumed as this sex object and that she is in control,” says Garrett Mireles, a New York and Tennessee-based brand strategist and copywriter. “How that’s received in the public eye isn’t as nuanced.”

Mireles says the fact that Sweeney is an actor cast in other people’s work and ideas complicates her ability to control the way her image comes across and who exactly she wants to appeal to.

“Sweeney doesn’t get to control the message as much as a musician does,” Mireles says. “Sabrina Carpenter, for example, is able to exert a sense of humor in her sexuality and to be a little bit more overtly tongue-in-cheek.”

Everything feels like bait in our current culture war

The American Eagle ads felt especially trollish because they seemed to hit on both of the accusations looming over Sweeney’s career: She’s too sexualized, and she’s promoting some sort of right-wing agenda. In this case, the right-coded overtones of the ad — heralding a blonde, white woman’s genes as the epitome of beauty and “goodness” — hit a lot harder.

Any implication of “good genes,” pun or not, would ring alarms in our political climate. Currently, ICE and the Trump administration have undertaken the most aggressive deportation effort in years, including the gleeful construction of an alligator-surrounded detainment center that has been compared to a concentration camp. When talking about crimes committed by immigrants, President Donald Trump has said there are a “lot of bad genes in our country.” Meanwhile, Health Department secretary Robert F. Kennedy has been accused of promoting “soft eugenics” through his proposals to eliminate vaccines and lifesaving health services that would disproportionately impact certain populations.

Outside of politics, pop culture is also feeling a lot more Trump-friendly these days. From country artists dominating the charts from trad-wife content online to celebrities cozying up to the president, it seems like everyone is embracing the reign of MAGA and the tastes of his voter base. This has made every piece of pop culture, from influencers to ad campaigns, fodder for viewing through a MAGA lens. At the same time, the right has made efforts to insert itself into cultural moments and ephemera, from animation memes to superhero-movie discourse. More and more regular people are vigilant about the way pop culture can be used to push political messages. But it can be difficult to know what does and doesn’t deserve our energy and cultural attention.

Still, it’s hard not to feel like we’ve all been effectively “got” by a brand that most of us haven’t thought about since high school, one that has not sparked this much fervent discussion in its entire existence. But even American Eagle might not have put as much thought into the ads as its critics did. Peter Bray, founder and executive creative director at advertising agency Bray & Co, says the American Eagle ad may be more innocent than we assume, the result of a “first thought” concept as opposed to anything intentionally controversial.

“I don’t think in any way this was their intent,” Bray says. “They thought they had a lightbulb moment of creativity and didn’t think about the bigger cultural picture.”

Whether or not it meant it, American Eagle illuminated a winning engagement strategy for the second Trump era: Flirt with the public’s fear (or excitement) about fascism — with the help of Sydney Sweeney.

Whale.io Accelerating Towards TGE – Unveils “Wager & Earn” Campaign and Launches WHALE Token Conversion https://earlybirdsinvest.com/whale-io-accelerating-towards-tge-unveils-wager-earn-campaign-and-launches-whale-token-conversion/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/whale-io-accelerating-towards-tge-unveils-wager-earn-campaign-and-launches-whale-token-conversion/#respond Wed, 14 May 2025 12:14:12 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/whale-io-accelerating-towards-tge-unveils-wager-earn-campaign-and-launches-whale-token-conversion/

May 14th, 2025 – Willemstad, Curaçao

Whale.io, the leading crypto casino and sportsbook, multichain platform, is doubling down on its mission to empower players with the launch of its new “Wager & Earn” campaign, and users can now convert WHALE tokens from Wheel of Whales to Whale.io.

These updates mark significant steps toward the highly anticipated WHALE Token Generation Event (TGE), offering players unprecedented opportunities to stack tokens, double their holdings, and prepare for the token’s upcoming launch. With a thriving community and a commitment to accessibility, Whale.io is setting the stage for a fair launch and game-changing moment in crypto gaming.

“Wager & Earn”: Stack WHALE Tokens with Every Bet

The “Wager & Earn” campaign is Whale.io’s latest innovation, designed to reward players for doing what they love—playing. The premise is simple yet powerful: every bet placed on Whale.io earns players XP, and each XP translates directly into one WHALE token added to their balance in real time. Whether spinning slots, betting on live casino games, or wagering on sports, every action counts toward building a WHALE stack before the token officially hits the blockchain.

“WHALE is coming, and early stackers eat first!” says the Whale.io team. “Let’s make it easy for you: every single bet you place earns you XP. And every XP? One WHALE token in your balance. In real time. Play anything you like: slots, live casino, sports, it all counts. Watch your XP climb and your WHALE stack grow before the token even hits the chain. Then? Use those tokens to unlock utility, staking perks, merch access, and real crypto value when the chain goes live. This is how you front-run the drop. Play now. Build the bag. Rule the launch.”

The current campaign encourages players to increase their WHALE token holdings in advance of the upcoming token generation event (TGE). Upon launch, token holders are expected to gain access to a range of platform-specific benefits. These include staking functionalities, in-game utilities, access to limited merchandise, project updates, and additional utility within the Whale.io ecosystem.

By linking token accrual to gameplay activities, Whale.io aims to integrate community participation into the broader token framework, thereby reinforcing engagement through functional incentives within the platform’s ecosystem.

Extended WHALE Token Conversion from Wheel of Whales

In another major update, users can now bring their WHALE tokens from Wheel of Whales to Whale.io. The conversion window is open for only 14 days, so all token holders need to be quick not to lose their hard earned tokens. This two weeks ensures that every player has the chance to bring their Wheel of Whales earnings—generated through spins or missions—into the Whale.io ecosystem, aligning their holdings with the platform’s upcoming TGE.

The conversion process is a critical step toward the WHALE token’s launch, consolidating tokens from Wheel of Whales, a play-to-earn game with 6 millions of players and billions of tokens generated, into Whale.io’s unified platform. To sweeten the deal, Whale.io is introducing an exciting “Double or Nothing” feature for converted tokens. Players who transfer their WHALE tokens from Wheel of Whales to Whale.io can opt to play a coin flip game, wagering all or a portion of their tokens for a chance to double their holdings. This high-stakes opportunity adds an extra layer of thrill, allowing players to go big and potentially amplify their WHALE stack.

“The race has begun—convert your tokens from #WoW to Whale!” the Whale.io team announced. “Play Double or Nothing—go BIG and DOUBLE YOUR WHALE! Keep earning and converting in #WoW. Every token counts.” This campaign underscores Whale.io’s commitment to making the TGE accessible and rewarding, ensuring that every player has a chance to participate in the token’s future.

A Step Closer to the WHALE TGE

These updates bring Whale.io closer to its WHALE TGE, a landmark event that will introduce the token to the broader crypto market. Unlike traditional token launches, WHALE is backed by a successful business with a large, engaged community of over 15 million players. The token’s utility is deeply integrated into Whale.io’s ecosystem, enabling staking, gameplay, and access to exclusive perks like exclusive merchandise and special events. Whale.io’s Buyback promise, which reinvests 10% of monthly casino revenue to buy back WHALE tokens, further enhances the token’s value by reducing the circulating supply over time.

By allowing users to convert tokens from Wheel of Whales to Whale platform and launching “Wager & Earn” campaign, Whale.io has launched another phase in their token launch roadmap and brings WHALE into their entertainment hub ahead of the TGE. The “Double or Nothing” coin flip adds an element of excitement, rewarding bold players with the potential for exponential gains. These initiatives reflect Whale.io’s community-first approach, avoiding venture capital or private rounds to ensure that retail players and loyal users are the primary beneficiaries of the token’s success.

Why WHALE Stands Out

The WHALE token is poised for a successful launch thanks to its strong foundation and unique features:

  • Thriving Business Backing: Whale.io’s crypto casino and sportsbook generates significant revenue, fueling the WHALE token’s utility and value. The platform’s growth directly supports token demand.
  • Real-Time Earning: The “Wager & Earn” campaign lets players accumulate WHALE tokens through everyday gameplay, making it easy to collect tokens without leaving the platform ahead of the TGE.
  • Community Focus: With no VC involvement, WHALE is designed to reward retail players and the Whale community, fostering wealth-building opportunities.
  • Utility and Innovation: From staking rewards to exclusive games in development, WHALE will power a range of experiences on Whale.io

Whale Casino Launches “Wager & Earn” Campaign Ahead of WHALE TGE

Whale.io has introduced the “Wager & Earn” campaign, enabling participants to convert Wheel of Whales tokens and engage with the “Double or Nothing” coin flip feature, which offers the potential to increase WHALE holdings through in-platform gameplay.

The platform has outlined additional updates and campaign developments across its social media channels, including details surrounding the upcoming token generation event (TGE).

As the TGE approaches, Whale.io continues to provide utility-driven engagement options designed to integrate token-based interactions into its broader gaming and rewards ecosystem.

Meatbags NFT Launches Campaign to Turn Nuclear Bunker Into DAO-Owned Club https://earlybirdsinvest.com/meatbags-nft-launches-campaign-to-turn-nuclear-bunker-into-dao-owned-club/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/meatbags-nft-launches-campaign-to-turn-nuclear-bunker-into-dao-owned-club/#respond Tue, 22 Apr 2025 00:49:52 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/meatbags-nft-launches-campaign-to-turn-nuclear-bunker-into-dao-owned-club/

Solana-based NFT project Meatbags is launching a $1.4 million crowdfunding campaign to purchase a Cold War-era nuclear bunker in Rutland, England. The doomsday-themed digital collectible project, led by the pseudonymous team Dead Bruv, plans to sell 100,000 NFTs at $14 each to fund acquisition and renovation of the historic military installation through a decentralized governance model.

Key details:

  • Meatbags will sell 100,000 NFTs at $14 each, with 10,000 reserved for existing holders via a 1:1 airdrop.

  • The bunker auction is scheduled for April 24 with a guide price of £650,000 (~$862,257).

  • NFT holders will join the “Billionaire Bunker Club” DAO to vote on future uses of the property.

  • The 1.4-acre site features a 1960s British Royal Observer Corps bunker.

  • If the auction bid fails, payment options include Solana Pay and credit cards, with a refund policy.

The #buythebunker Campaign Details

The Meatbags project has set an ambitious goal of raising $1.4 million through their NFT sale running from April 21 to April 24. Each “land deed” NFT costs $14, creating a pool of funds to cover the bunker’s purchase price, renovation costs, and ongoing operational expenses.

Existing Meatbags holders will receive special treatment, with 10,000 NFTs reserved for a 1:1 airdrop. At the same time, the remaining 90,000 tokens will be available to the public. The sale timing aligns with the bunker’s auction date of April 24.

The project includes flexible payment options through Solana Pay or credit cards. he team has committed to providing refunds within six months if their auction bid fails. Any excess funds raised beyond the purchase price will be allocated through DAO votes to fund future development.

From Military Installation to NFT-Owned Property

The target property is no ordinary real estate acquisition. This Cold War relic is a 1.4-acre site featuring a 1960s British Royal Observer Corps bunker and a decommissioned reservoir. Built in 1960 and decommissioned in 1968, it was one of 1,500 nuclear monitoring posts across the UK designed to detect nuclear bursts and radiation during the Cold War.

A key selling point is that planning permission has already been approved for converting the facility into a luxury residence with cathedral-style ceilings and panoramic views. The structure’s 30-inch-thick concrete walls provide both historical significance and practical durability.

The property is currently listed by SDL Property Auctions with a guide price of £650,000. The auction is scheduled for April 24 – creating urgency for the crowdfunding campaign to reach its goals.

The Billionaire Bunker Club: DAO Governance Structure

Purchasers of the NFTs won’t just be funding the acquisition – they’ll have a say in what happens next. NFT holders will automatically gain membership to the “Billionaire Bunker Club,” a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) with voting rights on the bunker’s future purpose.

The community has already begun floating creative ideas for the space, including:

  • A “Doomsday DJ” nightclub

  • An apocalyptic-themed Airbnb rental

  • A premium survivalist retreat

  • A members-only resort for NFT holders

If it all comes together, this could be one of the most interesting examples of how blockchain tech can be used to own something real.

Crypto Crowdfunding Evolution

The Meatbags project follows in the footsteps of previous crypto-driven crowdfunding initiatives but with key differences.

In 2021, ConstitutionDAO raised an impressive $47 million in an unsuccessful bid to purchase a copy of the U.S. Constitution. More successfully, LinksDAO acquired a Scottish golf club in 2023.

What sets the Meatbags campaign apart is its focus on a physical infrastructure asset with pre-approved redevelopment plans, creating clearer utility for NFT holders.

What is Star Atlas?

Star Atlas is a space-themed grand strategy MMO Web3 game, built in Unreal Engine 5, powered by Solana, and now available on PC via the Epic Games Store for those with a game key.

Players build powerful fleets and assemble a crew to embark on an interstellar journey – exploring distant planets, mining valuable resources and crafting powerful parts and structures – with the ultimate goal of conquering the galaxy.

Taking inspiration from titles such as EVE Online and Star Citizen, the game features a dynamic, community-driven economy. Star Atlas goes a step further by utilising the Solana blockchain as the backbone of an economy that has been meticulously designed by economists, ensuring that players truly own their key assets, and opening up all-new opportunities for players.

Star Atlas is driven by the $ATLAS token – the native currency of the Star Atlas economy. As of writing, $ATLAS has a market cap of over $22.6 million, with a fully-diluted value of more than $43.3 million.

What is Shaga?

Shaga is a co-operative cloud gaming platform and Twitch add-on layer. Owners of powerful gaming PCs can utilise their rigs to livestream video games and host lobbies, earning rewards for allowing viewers to play remotely via their iOS or Android device.

Utilising the latest ultra-low latency technology, Shaga opens access to the latest gaming titles to anyone with a smartphone. This allows creators to leverage their rigs and their community for new revenue opportunities, whilst also opening all-new possibilities for fan interactions and livestream entertainment.

As part of the $100,000 Creator Campaign with Star Atlas, participants will earn $ATLAS tokens, exclusive Ship NFTs, and GLOB points. GLOB is the ecosystem currency of Shaga, earned by completing quests and playing a part in the Shaga Network, and spent on a variety of rewards.

What’s next for Star Atlas?

This partnership with Shaga is the latest development in what has been a buoyant 2025 for Star Atlas so far.

On March 26, Star Atlas announced a partnership with decentralized AI network SingularityNET to integrate AI agents into the game. Powered by two systems named AIRIS (Autonomous Intelligent Reinforcement Interpreted Symbolism) and OpenCon Hyperon, these AI agents will explore, learn and adapt to the environments around them utilising complex decision-making processes.

This will allow for more natural and flexible NPC interactions, as well as opportunities for use in tutorials, contextual mission guidance, and economy management.

The team has also made substantial progress against its public roadmap, with new features, vehicles and updates both added and completed on a regular basis. The community continues to build in anticipation towards the Season 0 release – the first major step in the Star Atlas team fulfilling their vision to create “an immersive, decentralized gaming cybernation… a living galaxy where players don’t just play, but thrive.”

OpenAI countersues Elon Musk over alleged sabotage campaign https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-over-alleged-sabotage-campaign/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-over-alleged-sabotage-campaign/#respond Thu, 10 Apr 2025 15:56:18 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-over-alleged-sabotage-campaign/

OpenAI has filed a countersuit against Elon Musk, accusing the billionaire of leading a deliberate campaign to undermine the organization.

The legal filing, submitted on April 9, claimed that Musk’s actions allegedly included a fake takeover bid and coordinated efforts to damage the AI firm’s reputation.

According to OpenAI, these attacks intensified after ChatGPT’s massive success. The chatbot’s global popularity marked a turning point for the company and allegedly marked the beginning of Musk’s hostility.

The filing stated that Musk could not accept the success of a venture he had distanced himself from, choosing instead to launch a rival AI firm while publicly criticizing OpenAI and its leadership.

According to OpenAI:

“Musk made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead—not for humanity but for Elon Musk.”

The company alleged that Musk used his influence and platforms — including X — to spread negative claims and rally public opinion against OpenAI.

The firm claimed that these attacks were not random but part of a calculated strategy to damage its credibility and stall its growth.

The suit also outlined how Musk filed legal challenges, demanded access to internal records, and made a “sham bid” to acquire the company.

OpenAI further stated that Musk’s criticism centered on its planned shift from a nonprofit structure to a capped-profit model. Musk has publicly argued that the move betrayed the company’s founding mission.

However, OpenAI pushed back, stating the nonprofit remains in place and will oversee the organization’s future. It also claimed Musk previously supported restructuring to stay competitive, making his recent objections appear inconsistent.

The filing showed:

“Musk peddles the false claim that OpenAI is planning to ‘convert’ from a nonprofit into a for-profit enterprise. He does so knowing the nonprofit not only would continue to exist, but would be one of the best-resourced in history.”

The filing also revealed that Musk’s $97.4 billion bid to take control of OpenAI was firmly rejected because of the turmoil that followed his acquisition of Twitter in 2022.

According to OpenAI:

“Investors, partners, and employees saw what happened to Twitter when Musk took it over in 2022: the company’s value plummeted, business partners were left hanging, most employees were sent packing, and the business was ultimately absorbed into Musk’s AI company.”

Considering all of these issues, OpenAI has requested the court to prevent Musk from taking further action against the company and hold him accountable for the damage he has already caused.

Malware campaign ‘DollyWay’ breached 20,000 WordPress sites https://earlybirdsinvest.com/malware-campaign-dollyway-breached-20000-wordpress-sites/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/malware-campaign-dollyway-breached-20000-wordpress-sites/#respond Thu, 20 Mar 2025 04:17:14 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/malware-campaign-dollyway-breached-20000-wordpress-sites/

WordPress

A malware operation dubbed ‘DollyWay’ has been underway since 2016, compromising over 20,000 WordPress sites globally to redirect users to malicious sites.

The campaign has evolved significantly in the past eight years, leveraging advanced evasion, re-infection, and monetization strategies.

According to GoDaddy researcher Denis Sinegubko, DollyWay has been functioning as a large-scale scam redirection system in its latest version (v3). However, in the past, it has distributed more harmful payloads like ransomware and banking trojans.

“GoDaddy Security researchers have uncovered evidence linking multiple malware campaigns into a single, long-running operation we’ve named ‘DollyWay World Domination’,” explains a recent report by Godaddy.

“While previously thought to be separate campaigns, our research reveals these attacks share common infrastructure, code patterns, and monetization methods – all appearing to be connected to a single, sophisticated threat actor.

“The operation was named after the following tell-tale string, which is found in some variations of the malware: define(‘DOLLY_WAY’, ‘World Domination’).”

Thousands of stealthy infections

DollyWay v3 is an advanced redirection operation that targets vulnerable WordPress sites using n-day flaws on plugins and themes to compromise them.

As of February 2025, DollyWay generates 10 million fraudulent impressions per month by redirecting WordPress site visitors to fake dating, gambling, crypto, and sweepstakes sites.

The campaign is monetized through VexTrio and LosPollos affiliate networks after filtering visitors through a Traffic Direction System (TDS).

A Traffic Distribution System analyzes and redirects web traffic based on various aspects of a visitor, such as their location, device type, and referrer. Cybercriminals commonly use malicious TDS systems to redirect users to phishing sites or malware downloads.

The websites are breached via a script injection with ‘wp_enqueue_script,’ which dynamically loads a second script from the compromised site.

The second stage collects visitor referrer data to help categorize the redirection traffic and then loads the TDS script that decides on the validity of the targets.

Direct website visitors that have no referrer, are not bots (the script has a hardcoded list of 102 known bot user-agents), and are not logged-in WordPress users (including admins) are considered invalid and are not redirected.

The third stage selects three random infected sites to serve as TDS nodes and then loads hidden JavaScript from one of them to perform the final redirection to VexTrio or LosPollos scam pages.

The malware uses affiliate tracking parameters to ensure attackers get paid for each redirection.

It’s worth noting that the final redirect only occurs when the visitor interacts with a page element (clicks), evading passive scanning tools that only examine page loads.

Auto-reinfection ensures persistence

Sinegubko explains that DollyWay is a very persistent threat that automatically reinfects a site with every page load, so removing it is particularly hard.

It achieves this by spreading its PHP code across all active plugins and also adds a copy of the WPCode plugin (if not already installed) that contains obfuscated malware snippets.

WPCode is a third-party plugin allowing admins to add small snippets of “code” that modify WordPress functionality without directly editing theme files or WordPress code.

As part of an attack, the hackers hide WPCode from the WordPress plugin list so administrators cannot see or delete it, making disinfection complicated.

DollyWay also creates admin users named after random 32-character hex strings and keeps those accounts hidden in the admin panel. They are only visible through direct database inspection.

GoDaddy shared the complete list of the indicators of compromise (IoCs) associated with DollyWay to help defend against this threat.

It will publish more details about the operation’s infrastructure and shifting tactics in a follow-up post.
