New HybridPetya ransomware can bypass UEFI Secure Boot

A recently discovered ransomware strain called HybridPetya can bypass the UEFI Secure Boot feature to install a malicious application on the EFI System Partition.

HybridPetya appears inspired by the destructive Petya/NotPetya malware that encrypted computers and prevented Windows from booting in attacks in 2016 and 2017 but did not provide a recovery option.

Researchers at cybersecurity company ESET found a sample of HybridPetya on VirusTotal. They note that this may be a research project, a proof-of-concept, or an early version of a cybercrime tool still under limited testing.

Still, ESET says that its presence is yet another example (along with BlackLotus, BootKitty, and Hyper-V Backdoor) that UEFI bootkits with Secure Bypass functionality are a real threat.

HybridPetya incorporates characteristics from both Petya and NotPetya, including the visual style and attack chain of these older malware strains.

However, the developer added new things like installation into the EFI System Partition and the ability to bypass Secure Boot by exploiting the CVE-2024-7344 vulnerability.

ESET discovered the flaw in January this year, The issue consists in Microsoft-signed applications that could be exploited to deploy bootkits even with Secure Boot protection active on the target.

Upon launch, HybridPetya determines if the host uses UEFI with GPT partitioning and drops a malicious bootkit into the EFI System partition consisting of several files.

These include configuration and validation files, a modified bootloader, a fallback UEFI bootloader, an exploit payload container, and a status file that tracks the encryption progress.

ESET lists the following files used across analyzed variants of HybridPetya:

  1. \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\config (encryption flag + key + nonce + victim ID)
  2. \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\verify (used to validate correct decryption key)
  3. \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\counter (progress tracker for encrypted clusters)
  4. \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi.old (backup of original bootloader)
  5. \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\cloak.dat (contains XORed bootkit in Secure Boot bypass variant)

Also, the malware replaces \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi with the vulnerable ‘reloader.efi,’ and removes \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi.

The original Windows bootloader is also saved to be activated in the case of successful restoration, meaning that the victim paid the ransom.

Once deployed, HybridPetya triggers a BSOD displaying a bogus error, as Petya did, and forces a system reboot, allowing the malicious bootkit to execute upon system boot.

At this step, the ransomware encrypts all MFT clusters using a Salsa20 key and nonce extracted from the config file while displaying a fake CHKDSK message, like NotPetya.

Once the encryption completes, another reboot is triggered and the victim is served a ransom note during system boot, demanding a Bitcoin payment of $1,000.

In exchange, the victim is provided a 32-character key they can enter on the ransom note screen, which restores the original bootloader, decrypts the clusters, and prompts the user to reboot.

Though HybridPetya has not been observed in any real attacks in the wild, similar projects may choose to weaponize the PoC and use it in broad campaigns targeting unpatched Windows systems at any time.

Indicators of compromise to help defend against this threat have been made available on this GitHub repository.

Microsoft fixed CVE-2024-7344 with the January 2025 Patch Tuesday, so Windows systems that have applied this or later security updates are protected from HybridPetya.

Another solid practice against ransomware is to keep offline backups of your most important data, allowing free and easy system restoration.

Alex Gladstein: Bitcoin Helps Bypass Government Control https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alex-gladstein-bitcoin-helps-bypass-government-control/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alex-gladstein-bitcoin-helps-bypass-government-control/#respond Sun, 06 Jul 2025 19:32:31 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alex-gladstein-bitcoin-helps-bypass-government-control/

Alex Gladstein, the chief strategy officer at Human Rights Foundation, shared how Bitcoin
BTC

is helping people push back against authoritarian control.

Speaking at the Bitcoin Policy Summit in Washington, DC, he explained that this digital currency gives individuals a way to protect their money from being frozen, monitored, or devalued by their governments.

According to Gladstein, Bitcoin is especially effective when used without linking personal identity to it. In such cases, he said, it becomes much harder for authorities to track someone’s financial activity.

He also stated:

If you’re self-custodying your Bitcoin, governments can’t delete or freeze your stuff, and they certainly can’t hyperinflate you.

Gladstein gave an example during Ukraine’s protests against then-president Viktor Yanukovych in 2013. Many protestors suddenly lost access to their bank accounts.

At the time, Bitcoin was still relatively unknown and trading at around $100. The Human Rights Foundation was uncertain about its reliability but decided to try sending Bitcoin directly to those on the ground.

Gladstein said the result was a success since activists received funds even when other systems had failed.

The Human Rights Foundation works to defend civil liberties worldwide, particularly in countries with limited freedoms. Gladstein, who joined the organization in 2007, views Bitcoin as another tool to help people avoid financial control and censorship.

Sovereign entities opt for indirect Bitcoin exposure via Strategy to bypass constraints – StanChart https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sovereign-entities-opt-for-indirect-bitcoin-exposure-via-strategy-to-bypass-constraints-stanchart/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sovereign-entities-opt-for-indirect-bitcoin-exposure-via-strategy-to-bypass-constraints-stanchart/#respond Tue, 20 May 2025 21:16:26 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sovereign-entities-opt-for-indirect-bitcoin-exposure-via-strategy-to-bypass-constraints-stanchart/

Sovereign wealth funds and state institutions are increasingly opting to gain Bitcoin (BTC) exposure through Strategy (MSTR) rather than spot BTC exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to Standard Chartered’s head of digital assets research, Geoffrey Kendrick.

In an investor report published May 20, Kendrick said that regulatory filings show that increased MSTR holdings drove the bulk of sovereign Bitcoin accumulation over the past quarter, even as direct ETF activity remained flat overall.

The filings confirm speculation that sovereign interest in Bitcoin is growing every quarter, with nations starting to build exposure in various ways.

Indirect exposure on the rise

Kendrick noted that while headlines focused on Wisconsin’s 3,400 BTC-equivalent ETF exit, the real momentum came from governments and public institutions buying equity in Strategy, which now holds 576,230 BTC.

Regulatory filings reveal that Norway, Switzerland, and South Korea were among the most active buyers of MSTR during the first quarter, collectively adding over 1,600 BTC equivalent of exposure via MSTR shares.

In the US, state pension funds in California, New York, and North Carolina also added another 1,000 BTC equivalent via MSTR. This contrasts with Wisconsin, which divested its ETF exposure.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi increased its direct ETF exposure by 300 BTC equivalent, bringing its total to 5,000 BTC, and Saudi Arabia’s central bank made its first-ever appearance with a small allocation.

Kendrick said that the 13F filings show that institutional investors are increasingly using MSTR as a structural bridge into Bitcoin markets.

He added that Strategy’s appeal lies in its unique positioning as a leveraged proxy to Bitcoin, especially for allocators constrained by operational or regulatory barriers to holding digital assets directly.

Broader implications

Despite overall sovereign ETF positions remaining unchanged, offset by Wisconsin’s exit, Standard Chartered views the net increase in MSTR exposure as a bullish signal.

The moves align with the bank’s long-standing view that Bitcoin could reach $150,000 under broader institutional integration by the end of this year and $500,000 by the end of President Donald Trump’s current term in 2028.

Standard Chartered said in its report:

“The latest 13F data… supports our core thesis that Bitcoin (BTC) will reach the $500,000 level before Trump leaves office as it attracts a wider range of institutional buyers.”

The report also noted that ETF and MSTR positions have now surpassed 100,000 BTC in combined quarterly holdings, reinforcing Bitcoin’s growing presence in traditional portfolios.

As geopolitical uncertainty and inflation persist, sovereign entities appear to be experimenting with Bitcoin as a store of value, albeit cautiously and often indirectly.

Kendrick concluded the note by suggesting that the detail and diversity of 13F Bitcoin-related filings are “continuing to improve,” indicating deeper market penetration and data granularity in future disclosures.

Sophisticated bot uses OpenAI to bypass filters, flooding over 80,000 websites with spam https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sophisticated-bot-uses-openai-to-bypass-filters-flooding-over-80000-websites-with-spam/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sophisticated-bot-uses-openai-to-bypass-filters-flooding-over-80000-websites-with-spam/#respond Sat, 12 Apr 2025 18:28:16 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sophisticated-bot-uses-openai-to-bypass-filters-flooding-over-80000-websites-with-spam/

Cutting corners: A sophisticated spam campaign leveraging GenAI’s large language models has targeted tens of thousands of websites, revealing the darker side of LLMs. According to a detailed report by SentinelLabs, the framework behind this operation, dubbed AkiraBot, has successfully bypassed spam detection filters, delivering AI-generated messages to over 80,000 websites in just four months.

AkiraBot is a Python-based framework that exploits website contact forms and live chat widgets, primarily targeting small and medium-sized businesses. Its goal is to promote questionable search engine optimization services under the brands “Akira” and “ServiceWrap.”

Unlike traditional spam tools that rely on repetitive templates, AkiraBot uses OpenAI’s chat API to generate unique messages tailored to each targeted website. It crafts personalized content using site-specific details scraped with BeautifulSoup, making the messages more difficult for spam filters to detect.

The framework’s modular design includes advanced CAPTCHA bypass mechanisms and network evasion techniques. It uses Selenium WebDriver to simulate legitimate browsing behavior, along with scripts like inject.js to manipulate browser attributes such as graphics rendering, installed fonts, and system memory profiles.

These modifications allow AkiraBot to mimic real user behavior, defeating CAPTCHA systems like hCAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA. Additionally, it relies on proxy services like SmartProxy to diversify traffic sources and evade IP-based restrictions.

SentinelLabs uncovered archives dating back to September 2024 that document AkiraBot’s evolution. Initially referred to as “Shopbot,” the framework expanded its targeting from Shopify-based websites to platforms like GoDaddy, Wix, Squarespace, and others commonly used by small businesses.

The bot’s graphical user interface allows operators to monitor success metrics and adjust settings for concurrently targeting multiple websites. Logs obtained by researchers reveal that AkiraBot successfully spammed over 80,000 domains while failing on approximately 11,000 attempts. In total, more than 420,000 unique domains were targeted.

The use of AI-generated content in spam campaigns marks a significant shift in tactics. It highlights the dual-use nature of large language models: while they power innovations in automation and communication, they also provide tools for malicious activity.

OpenAI responded promptly after being alerted by SentinelLabs, disabling the API key associated with AkiraBot and reaffirming its commitment to preventing misuse. “Distributing output from our services for spam is against our policies,” OpenAI stated. “We take misuse seriously and are continually improving our systems to detect abuse.”

Despite this, SentinelLabs warns that AkiraBot’s operators are likely to continue refining their techniques as website hosting providers strengthen defenses. It noted that the campaign’s reliance on CAPTCHA bypassing technologies and proxy rotation demonstrates a high level of sophistication and determination.

Report: Russia Leveraging Crypto for Oil Trade to Bypass Sanctions https://earlybirdsinvest.com/report-russia-leveraging-crypto-for-oil-trade-to-bypass-sanctions/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/report-russia-leveraging-crypto-for-oil-trade-to-bypass-sanctions/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 22:40:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/report-russia-leveraging-crypto-for-oil-trade-to-bypass-sanctions/

Russia has reportedly turned to cryptocurrencies to facilitate its oil trade with India and China, using digital assets to circumvent Western sanctions.

While fiat currencies like the UAE dirham still dominate the majority of transactions, digital assets are becoming a small but growing component of the country’s energy trade.

Deepening Crypto Adoption

The development was first reported by Reuters, which, citing unidentified sources, stated that Russian oil companies are using Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and stablecoins like Tether (USDT) to convert Chinese yuan and Indian rupees into rubles.

According to the report, a Chinese buyer can pay for Russian oil in yuan to an offshore trading company. An intermediary then converts the funds into crypto before transferring them through multiple accounts. Finally, the digital assets are exchanged for rubles in Russia, allowing transactions to bypass traditional banking networks.

This method is said to have proven particularly useful in skipping Moscow’s need for U.S. dollars. It also aligns with legislative changes Russia made in 2024, permitting the use of digital currencies in international trade.

Although the Bank of Russia has put in place a strict ban on domestic crypto payments, the government has encouraged their use in cross-border transactions, signaling a pragmatic approach to maintaining economic stability.

Limited Crypto Trading for Select Investors

Recently, the bank proposed a three-year trial allowing select high-networth investors to trade crypto under strict regulatory oversight. Going by reports, the initiative, announced on March 12, is intended to improve market transparency while maintaining control over digital asset activities in the country.

Last year, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov confirmed that Russian businesses are using cryptocurrencies to navigate economic restrictions imposed by the United States and its allies following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The trend isn’t unique to Russia. Other blacklisted nations, such as Venezuela and Iran, have also turned to crypto to keep their economies afloat. However, the oil exporting giant’s adoption of virtual currencies in its energy trade marks a major escalation in its efforts to sidestep the restrictions placed on it.
