Two individuals have been taken into custody in Hong Kong, accused of using electricity from care homes for cryptocurrency mining.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, the suspects are believed to have placed several mining devices above ceiling panels at two different facilities during renovation work.

The case first revealed when one of the care homes began experiencing frequent internet disruptions. While investigating the issue, the home’s IT staff discovered unfamiliar hardware hidden above an office ceiling. A second center later found similar equipment.

Both sets of devices appeared to be mining cryptocurrencies using power from the buildings.

The suspects were arrested on September 5 in Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po. The two individuals acted independently and are not affiliated with any group. The charges filed relate to the unauthorized use of electricity, a criminal offense under local law.

Inspector Ng Tsz-wing from the Sham Shui Po technology crime unit explained that the mining equipment had been installed during refurbishment. The unauthorized power usage added about HK$9,000 (roughly US$1,153) to the monthly bills.

Authorities are advising building operators and care institutions to monitor energy consumption and network activity. Ng recommended checking for unexplained changes in bills or digital services. He also urged organizations to supervise contractors and carry out physical inspections in less visible areas.

According to Hong Kong’s Theft Ordinance, using electricity without approval is treated as theft and can lead to up to five years in prison.

Recently, the District of Columbia accused Athena Bitcoin of collecting hidden fees and failing to protect users from fraud. How did the case unfold? Read the full story.

Police in Phú Thọ Province, Vietnam, have shut down the largest cryptocurrency scam recorded in the country, according to a report by Công an Nhân dân, a local media outlet.

The group promoted Paynet Coin (PAYN) through two main websites, FMCPAY.com and AFF2024.com. People were told they could earn monthly profits of 5% to 9%, as well as extra payments for bringing in new members.

According to investigators, Nguyễn Văn Hà from Gia Lai Province was the main organizer. Although he had no formal background in technology, he is said to have hired programmers to create the PAYN blockchain, a security system, and a rewards program.

These features were designed to make the project appear real. The scheme also claimed that PAYN could be used for booking travel and that its exchange was registered in the United States.

To gain trust, the group held large presentations at expensive venues. Police noted that Hà took around $200 million from the scheme. Even after arrests began, money continued to come in from other countries, including India and the Philippines.

The Vietnamese news outlet VnExpress reported that police have frozen or seized about $38 million in cash, foreign currency, and real estate. So far, 20 people have been taken into custody.

Hà, along with his deputy Phan Việt Lập and other members of the group, is facing charges of breaking multi-level marketing laws and using online systems to take money from others.

According to court documents, the FBI explained that Tushal Rathod carried out this scheme between November 2021 and June 2024.

The case centers on a type of scam known as business email compromise. This involves tricking companies into sending payments to the wrong accounts by stealing email login information and watching for upcoming transactions.

Rathod is reported to have used this method while operating several business bank accounts to receive and move the stolen money.

Seven bank accounts across six different banks were used. Records indicated that around $1.2 million was converted into Bitcoin and sent to unknown addresses.

At least three of the banks warned Rathod that the deposits looked suspicious. In response, he provided an invoice to explain the money, but it turned out to be fake. One bank showed this invoice to a victim, who confirmed it was not real.

The FBI also said Rathod allegedly involved his girlfriend and family members by transferring funds through their accounts. Over $1 million passed through their hands, though Citibank was able to recover $800,000 of that amount.

Rathod faces several charges, including wire fraud and money laundering. If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years in prison.

Four people in Queensland, Australia, have been charged in connection with a large-scale money laundering operation that allegedly turned over $123 million in illegal funds into cryptocurrency.

The arrests followed a year-and-a-half-long investigation led by the Australian Federal Police, working with state and tax authorities, according to a June 9 statement by the Australian Taxation Office.

On June 5 and 6, officers searched 14 properties in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The raids uncovered cryptocurrency worth about $110,000, around $30,000 in cash, various encrypted devices, company records, vehicles, properties, and several bank accounts.

The operation used a Gold Coast-based security company that offered armored cash transport. Authorities believe the business helped move criminal money, including proceeds from drug sales, through fake companies, luxury car sales, and cryptocurrency platforms.

A senior officer stated that the group deliberately tried to cover up the true source and value of the funds, while also distancing themselves from the transactions to avoid being linked to any criminal activity.

One of the suspects, a 32-year-old man from Brisbane’s Heathwood suburb, is accused of laundering over $6 million in just over a year. Police said he used a business registered under his wife’s name to receive payments from the security company. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in court.

Another man, aged 58 and living in the West End, is linked to a vintage car business suspected of helping to launder about $4.1 million. He faces multiple charges related to money laundering.

Two other suspects from Maudsland, the director and general manager of the security company, have also been charged. They are accused of helping to process more than $6.4 million and have been released on bail while the case continues.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man, Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou, was arrested in Morocco on June 4. What happened? Read the full story.

Trung Nguyen, who lived in Danvers, also has to give up $1.5 million and will be under supervision for three years after he leaves prison. The sentence was announced on May 22 by the US Attorney’s Office in Boston.

Nguyen ran a business under the name “National Vending” between 2017 and 2020. Although it appeared to be a vending machine company, it was actually a cash-to-Bitcoin service that was not registered with federal authorities, as required by law.

To avoid being caught, Nguyen used methods he learned in an online course. He made up supplier names, kept the word “Bitcoin” out of his communications, and used the vending machine label to avoid suspicion.

People who used his service included scam victims and a drug dealer who sent him $250,000 in 2018 over ten separate transactions. The US Department of Justice said Nguyen moved more than $1 million into Bitcoin but never filed the required paperwork for large or suspicious transactions.

Nguyen usually met clients in person and accepted large amounts of cash. In 2023, he was charged after investigators met him while posing as customers. He accepted cash and sent Bitcoin in return, taking a fee of just over 5%.

Amalgam’s Jeremy Jordan-Jones Busted Over Fraud, Phony Blockchain Claims https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amalgams-jeremy-jordan-jones-busted-over-fraud-phony-blockchain-claims/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amalgams-jeremy-jordan-jones-busted-over-fraud-phony-blockchain-claims/#respond Thu, 22 May 2025 08:19:08 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/amalgams-jeremy-jordan-jones-busted-over-fraud-phony-blockchain-claims/

Jeremy Jordan-Jones, the founder of Amalgam Capital Ventures, has been charged with fraud after US authorities accused him of tricking investors into giving him over $1 million for a fake blockchain project.

He was indicted and arrested on May 21 after the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) completed their investigation.

According to court documents, Jordan-Jones ran a scheme between January 2021 and November 2022. During that time, he claimed his company was working on new blockchain-based payment tools and sales systems.

He also told investors that Amalgam had formed partnerships, including with sports groups, and that the company would soon be listed on crypto exchanges. However, prosecutors say these claims were false.

Officials said Amalgam had no working products, almost no customers, and had not formed any real partnerships. Still, investors were led to believe the business was growing. Jordan-Jones allegedly used these lies to convince people to hand over money, which he then spent on personal expenses instead of business development.

The charges also say he created fake financial records to support his claims. In one example, he submitted a bank statement showing over $18 million in Amalgam’s account to apply for a company credit card.

Jordan-Jones faces several charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud, making false statements to a bank, and identity theft. The fraud charges each carries penalties of up to 20 years in prison. The charge for lying to a bank could lead to 30 years. The identity theft charge has a mandatory two-year sentence if convicted.

Authorities in Europe have arrested 17 people involved in an illegal money-moving network that helped other criminal groups transfer over €21 million (about $23.5 million) using cryptocurrency.

The group operated mainly in Spain, with links to Austria and Belgium, and supported clients involved in drug smuggling and human trafficking, according to a May 14 report from Europol.

Instead of going through traditional banks, the network used a system similar to hawala—an informal way to send money that relies on personal trust rather than official records. In this case, crypto was used to carry out the transfers.

Investigators said the group also advertised these services on social media, which presented them as normal remittance options.

The arrests, carried out in January 2025, followed a joint operation led by Spanish authorities with help from Belgium and Austria. Europol supported the investigation, and over 250 officers were involved in the raids. Most of the suspects were from China or Syria and targeted clients from similar backgrounds.

Fifteen people were arrested in Spain, one in Austria, and one in Belgium. So far, 15 of them have been placed in custody while the investigation continues.

Police seized €4.5 million (around $5 million) worth of items during the operation. This included 18 cars, four shotguns, and various electronics.

About €183,000 (roughly $205,000) in cryptocurrency was taken, along with €421,000 (around $471,000) in cash from 77 linked bank accounts. Officers also collected high-value goods such as designer bags, watches, and cigars worth €876,000 (close to $980,000).

Jay Clayton, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that Long Island resident Eugene William Austin Jr. has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for leading a fraudulent crypto scheme with his son.

According to an April 23 statement from the US Attorney’s Office, the two deceived investors out of approximately $12 million by pretending to be brokers for large crypto deals and offering fake investment opportunities.

Eugene was convicted in September 2024 for conspiring to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and moving stolen funds across state lines. His son Brandon Austin, who helped carry out the scheme, had already received a four-year sentence.

Eugene and Brandon promoted short-term crypto investments with the promise of high profits and said they could connect startups to wealthy private investors. More than 24 people fell for these offers.

They also told business owners and entrepreneurs that they could arrange purchases of large amounts of cryptocurrency. One deal alone was worth $5 million, and many others involved hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Instead of investing the money, the two spent it on personal luxuries. The funds were used to pay for high-end hotels, restaurants, shopping, and even a 2022 Jaguar SUV. They also made small payments to some victims to keep them from getting suspicious.

The court has ordered Eugene to forfeit $6,062,564 and to pay back a total of $12,662,564 in restitution. After serving his prison term, he will be subject to a three-year period of supervised release.

Two Estonian men, Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turõgin, have pleaded guilty to running a large-scale cryptocurrency fraud scheme that took in over $577 million.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington announced on February 13 that authorities had secured $400 million in seized assets as part of their plea agreement.

The two operated HashFlare, a company that sold cryptocurrency mining contracts to customers. However, instead of mining, they manipulated data to make it seem like mining was occurring. In reality, the company lacked the computing power needed to deliver the services it claimed.

The defendants have agreed to forfeit various assets, including real estate, luxury vehicles, and cryptocurrency accounts, which were obtained through their fraudulent activities.

Potapenko and Turõgin also admitted to running a separate scam in 2017 under the name Polybius. This project, marketed as an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) for a digital bank, raised around $31 million.

The FBI Seattle office said in a November 2022 statement, “Instead of using the proceeds to create a digital bank, Turõgin and Potapenko used a large portion of the proceeds for their own personal benefit“.
