Kenya’s efforts to set rules for digital asset companies have raised concerns among some local crypto startups.

A new bill, which would create a regulatory body for the sector, includes a group called the Virtual Asset Chamber of Commerce (VAC) in its governance structure.

Startups claimed that this group has close ties to Binance

$3.73B

and could influence the future of crypto regulation in the country.

The Kenyan Wall Street reviewed documents showing VAC will have a seat on the regulatory board if the bill passes. Some entrepreneurs argued that Binance has funded VAC’s public events and discussions, and that the group acts more like a partner than a neutral advisor.

According to the report, Binance paid VAC $6,000 per country each month for policy support. This has raised worries that VAC could push for regulations that favor Binance.

The report also mentioned past efforts by VAC to become involved in Rwanda’s crypto rules, which led some to question whether the group is serving wider interests or simply representing Binance.

A Kenyan industry stakeholder warned that allowing a group tied to a crypto exchange to help shape rules could hurt Kenya’s international standing.

However, VAC’s director, Basil Ogolla, stated that VAC has held discussions with the IMF, the Central Bank of Kenya, and the National Assembly. According to him, being included in the regulatory process is a result of this track record and the trust the group has built.

Meta’s content review board has requested that the company remove a Facebook video that featured a fake version of Ronaldo Nazário to promote a game app.

According to a June 5 statement, the video, made with artificial intelligence (AI), showed the retired footballer encouraging users to play Plinko, which claimed it could earn them more than a regular job in Brazil.

The video’s voice and visuals were clearly out of sync, but it still gained over 600,000 views. Although flagged by a user for being misleading, Meta’s system did not treat the report as urgent.

When the user appealed the decision, it still did not receive a proper review. Only after the matter was taken to Meta’s Oversight Board did action follow.

The Oversight Board, which Meta established in 2020, investigated the situation and determined that the video violated Meta’s rules on fraud and spam.

It also said Meta should not have let the post be used for advertising, since it showed a well-known person promoting something without their permission.

The board stated in a press release that removing the video aligns with Meta’s own guidelines. It also pointed out that Meta’s ad system should have caught the problem sooner, as it goes against the company’s policy of not using celebrity images to attract people to click on ads.

On May 12, Jamie Lee Curtis called on Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take down an ad that used an AI-generated image of her. What did she say? Read the full story.

Ethereum Foundation's Management and Board Structure https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundations-management-and-board-structure/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundations-management-and-board-structure/#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 00:16:14 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundations-management-and-board-structure/

The recent appointments of the two Co-Executive Directors and President are part of a broader effort to strengthen the Ethereum Foundation, and this structure is designed to ensure our vision, strategic and balanced execution, technical direction, and ecosystem development. This blog is intended to clarify the structure of the management team and the board.

New Management (Strategic & Operational Execution)

EF’s Co-EDs will lead and execute together with other management members. You can expect to hear from members of EF management regularly on their plans, decisions, and other new changes.

  • Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director
  • Tomasz K. Stańczak, Co-Executive Director
  • Bastian Aue – Focus areas: Org strategy, Hiring and Training, Co-stewards
  • Josh Stark – Focus areas: Project execution, Comms & marketing, Co-stewards

Board of Directors (Oversight & Vision)

The EF board is like a security council to protect the heart and soul of EF, and to ensure compliance as a Swiss foundation. The board sets the vision, oversees that the high-level strategies and decisions by management are aligned with the Foundation’s values. The Board is also responsible for selecting Executive Director(s), and if necessary terminating the employment of executives. The current board of directors includes:

  • Vitalik Buterin, Founder – continues to provide technical and intellectual guidance to the broader Ethereum ecosystem
  • Aya Miyaguchi, President – sets the Ethereum Foundation’s vision with other board members. Manages some key external relationships
  • Patrick Storchenegger, Swiss counsel – serves as the Swiss representative for legal and compliance matters
  • Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director – serves as the bridge between the board, executives, and management

The board has shared the vision, guiding principles and goals for the next few years with the management team. We anticipate further strengthening the board to better serve its mission over time.

Tomasz and Hsiao-Wei Wang’s appointments as Co-EDs are an unconventional decision, but one that allows them to complement one another at a busy time for the Ethereum ecosystem and EF alike.

Tomasz will be enabled to help EF drive strong and comprehensive changes based on his grasp of community and technological needs while he stays involved in other companies (Nethermind and venture affiliations). The board and Tomasz have agreed to the expected two year term for his Co-ED role at EF to leverage his proven strategic execution-expertise and experience, especially as the next couple of years bring significant opportunities for Ethereum.

Hsiao-Wei’s dual board and ED roles, in addition to her research experience, will help her to serve as a bridge between the board and management, with an eye for the needs of the organization that come with a deep understanding of its history and place.

Ethereum Foundation introduces new leadership model based on management team, board of directors https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundation-introduces-new-leadership-model-based-on-management-team-board-of-directors/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundation-introduces-new-leadership-model-based-on-management-team-board-of-directors/#respond Mon, 28 Apr 2025 20:06:44 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-foundation-introduces-new-leadership-model-based-on-management-team-board-of-directors/

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) announced a restructuring of its leadership on April 28, highlighting the focus areas of its two co-executive directors and separating the work areas of its management team and board of directors.

The changes are part of an effort to enhance strategic execution, strengthen internal operations, and further support the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem as it expands.

Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak were appointed as co-executive directors in March, as part of a restructure intended to balance technical expertise with operational leadership.

The EF clarified that the co-executive directors will work closely with the broader management team, executing the foundation’s vision through strategic planning, ecosystem stewardship, and operational oversight.

Bastian Aue and Josh Stark have also joined the management team with defined focus areas, including organizational strategy, hiring, project execution, and communications.

Management structure and board oversight

Under the new structure, the management team is responsible for daily operations, while the board of directors oversees vision and compliance.

The current board consists of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, president Aya Miyaguchi, Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger, and co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang.

The board ensures that management decisions and the foundation’s principles are aligned and has the authority to appoint and, if necessary, terminate executive leadership.

Buterin and Miyaguchi reiterated that Ethereum’s resilience depends on technical decentralization and social and structural decentralization.

The board emphasized that the Ethereum Foundation must maintain a flexible, supportive role rather than exert centralized control over the ecosystem’s evolution.

Strategic priorities

In a joint statement, Wang and Stańczak outlined their focus areas for the next 12 months, with the priorities including scaling Ethereum’s mainnet, improving interoperability between L1 and L2 networks, to enhance user and developer experience.

They added that technical excellence would remain the foundation for all initiatives. The two co-executive directors detailed four guiding principles that will shape decision-making: censorship resistance, open-source innovation, privacy protection, and security.

They said that these values are central to supporting Ethereum’s long-term resilience and usefulness as a global public good.

Stańczak, a Nethermind affiliate who participates in venture activities, will serve a two-year term as co-executive director, focusing on accelerating the execution of projects critical to Ethereum’s technical infrastructure.

Wang will bridge board directives and management activities, drawing on her research experience and historical knowledge of the Ethereum Foundation’s operations.

Vision for Ethereum’s future

In a separate post, the Ethereum Foundation articulated its broader vision, describing its role as a steward of the “Infinite Garden,” the title given to the Ethereum ecosystem.

The foundation stated its commitment to identifying and addressing high-leverage areas where its contributions are uniquely necessary, while intentionally stepping back to empower independent teams whenever possible.

The foundation’s long-term goals include maximizing meaningful Ethereum usage across various applications such as decentralized finance, social media, and AI coordination platforms. Another core objective is to ensure the resilience of Ethereum’s technical and social infrastructure through decentralization, risk management, and diversified development teams.

EF leadership noted that purposeful subtraction, designing systems that distribute power rather than accumulate it, remains a key part of its governance philosophy. The foundation aims to adapt its structure and initiatives without compromising Ethereum’s foundational values as the ecosystem grows.

The Ethereum Foundation concluded that it would continue strengthening its management structure and strategic focus, supporting Ethereum’s mission to serve as a resilient, neutral platform for global coordination across technology, finance, and governance.

OpenAI Countersues Elon Musk, Cites Plan to Take Over Board https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-cites-plan-to-take-over-board/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-cites-plan-to-take-over-board/#respond Thu, 10 Apr 2025 20:20:50 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/openai-countersues-elon-musk-cites-plan-to-take-over-board/

OpenAI has filed a countersuit claiming Elon Musk tried to take control of the organization through unfair tactics.

The company says it has emails showing Musk pushed for changes that would have given him control of the board and future direction.

The lawsuit focuses on a $97 billion offer that OpenAI calls fake. The group also wants money for damages and a court order to stop Musk from getting involved again.

Although Musk has said OpenAI moved away from its nonprofit goals, the group said in an April 10 post on X that he was the one who first suggested turning it into a for-profit company—if he was in charge.

According to emails included in the filing, Musk raised questions about OpenAI’s structure as early as 2015. He suggested changing it to a mix of a regular company and a nonprofit to better align goals.

In September 2017, Musk reportedly made a formal push for control. He offered funding in exchange for leadership, saying he wanted to appoint most of the board and become CEO. One email quoted him saying:

I would unequivocally have initial control of the company.

OpenAI also claims Musk had his team create a separate for-profit business called Open Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Inc. This company would hold OpenAI’s intellectual property, according to the complaint. The idea was rejected by the other founders, who said it could lead to a situation where one person had too much control.

Meanwhile, Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former Meta executive, recently planned to testify before US lawmakers about the company’s behind-the-scenes dealings with Chinese officials. What are her allegations? Read the full story.

UNA and Pebble represent a new wave of open-source smartwatches, and I’m on board https://earlybirdsinvest.com/una-and-pebble-represent-a-new-wave-of-open-source-smartwatches-and-im-on-board/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/una-and-pebble-represent-a-new-wave-of-open-source-smartwatches-and-im-on-board/#respond Sun, 06 Apr 2025 06:10:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/una-and-pebble-represent-a-new-wave-of-open-source-smartwatches-and-im-on-board/

Only a few weeks after preorders opened for the rebooted Pebble Core watches, Scottish indie brand UNA kickstarted “the world’s first” repairable & upgradable GPS sports watch: the UNA Watch. And I’m basking in this sudden new trend of open-source watches as the big-name brands trend toward subscriptions.

The UNA Watch Kickstarter lists out its features: continuous heart rate, blood oxygen, steps, and floors climbed in normal settings, plus fitness features like HR zones, pace, laps, and (after launch) downloadable GPX routes. It has dual-frequency GPS and 10-day battery life.

Interestingly, it runs on the same Cortex-M33 coprocessor found in the Pixel Watch 3, only without the battery-guzzling Snapdragon.

I appreciate that the UNA Watch charges with a simple USB-C slot instead of a proprietary cable and that you’ll be able to buy modular upgrades like music storage or a mic/speaker combo and install them yourself. It also won’t have any subscription.

You can even buy the dev tool for an extra $40 to add your own apps and firmware!

Pebble is much less fitness-focused, making UNA a better fit for my lifestyle. However, both share an open-source, enthusiast philosophy where people can code their own apps or add their own sensors as needed. In theory, the community will build up the UNA Watch’s limited feature set — just as Pebble asked its community for help developing new software.

My limited coding background makes it unlikely that I can help either community. But smartwatch brands have moved away from letting indie devs into their closed systems, to everyone’s detriment. That’s why devices like UNA and Pebble are so important and have me excited to buy into their communities.

UNA and Pebble are fighting against the tide

A rendering depicting Core Devices' new PebbleOS smartwatches: the Core 2 Duo and the Time 2.

I’ve reviewed almost every mainstream smartwatch brand out there today, and it feels like they’re all starting to converge on the same priorities.

Some wearable brands are honing in on offering medical-grade health tracking and adding new data points like blood pressure and glucose. Others, like Garmin, are going all-in on AI as a pretense to charge more for premium features with its Connect Plus subscription.

Basically, we’re entering the heavyweight era of smartwatches, where brands bring in doctors for more accurate data and squeeze LLMs onto your wrist. And while that’s exciting in its way, it doesn’t leave much room for experimentation — for smaller brands, tiny teams, or indie devs to try something new — because every watch needs a laundry list of features to compete.

Part of that is Apple’s fault. I’ve previously written about how Apple’s locked watch ecosystem forced wearable brands to focus on fitness and how brands like Pebble today can’t offer messaging, third-party app stores, or other smarts because of Apple’s restrictions. Until the EU forces Apple to open up its ecosystem, that won’t change (on iOS, at least).

That’s why I’m considering dropping money on the UNA Watch or Pebble Watch, even though they’re objectively less feature-packed than other watches on the market. To support brands that will go off the beaten industry path and try new things.

More modular smartwatches, please

I’ve seen other “hackable” watches recently like Spectra that count on their community to come up with exciting ideas. But the UNA Watch is especially intriguing to me, assuming it lives up to the brand’s promises.

I appreciate that you can take out the battery and replace it yourself. A lot of wearable tech isn’t repairable — especially smart rings — and when your watch naturally loses capacity, manufacturers would rather that you buy a new watch than keep your old device chugging along.

With the UNA Watch, you can unscrew everything yourself, either to replace things or add new features years later. Based on the Kickstarter comments, they’ll choose what new modules to make based on what the community asks for, such as the mic/speaker for Bluetooth calling.

Pebble originally tried letting people add “smart straps” to augment their watches after the fact. I feel like UNA follows that legacy, except that the modules will slot directly onto the watch itself. The question will be how many modules you’ll be able to add.

The UNA Watch Kickstarter will take place until May 2, with plenty of early-bird deals available to save $75 on the eventual list price. It’s expected to ship in August 2025. Meanwhile, if you’re more interested in Pebble, its new watches are also available for preorder now, with lower prices but a later scheduled release date of December 2025.

Eric Trump joins Bitcoin firm Metaplanet’s advisory board, stock surges 17% https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eric-trump-joins-bitcoin-firm-metaplanets-advisory-board-stock-surges-17/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eric-trump-joins-bitcoin-firm-metaplanets-advisory-board-stock-surges-17/#respond Fri, 21 Mar 2025 11:01:54 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eric-trump-joins-bitcoin-firm-metaplanets-advisory-board-stock-surges-17/

Tokyo-listed Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has appointed Eric Trump, the son of US President Donald Trump, to its newly formed Strategic Board of Advisors.

Metaplanet announced Trump’s appointment on March 21, confirming that he will join as the first official member of the new advisory board. The board aims to unite influential voices committed to advancing financial innovation and Bitcoin adoption.

The company stated that this move reflects its dedication to building a top-tier advisory team. Trump brings experience across multiple industries and has become increasingly vocal about Bitcoin and digital assets.

Metaplanet described him as a strong advocate for Bitcoin adoption and a valuable addition to its strategic direction. It added:

“Eric Trump brings a wealth of experience in real estate, finance, brand development, and strategic business growth and has become a leading voice and advocate of digital asset adoption worldwide.”

Simon Gerovich, Metaplanet’s Director, expressed optimism about the appointment. He noted that Trump’s global business insight and engagement with the Bitcoin community will help accelerate the company’s vision of becoming a world-leading BTC treasury firm.

According to Google Finance, the news sparked investor interest, pushing Metaplanet’s stock up by over 17% to ¥4,730.

Strategic appointment

Eric Trump’s appointment appears to signal a deliberate step in Metaplanet’s international growth strategy.

After listing its shares on the OTCQX in December, the firm has worked to expand global visibility and attract US investors.

Considering this, Trump’s son’s presence on Metaplanet’s board could help boost the firm’s appeal among American investors, especially as it positions itself as an emerging alternative to Michael Saylor’s Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy).

Eric Trump has taken a more public role in the crypto space. He is connected to World Liberty Financial, a family-backed digital asset venture. Earlier this month, he endorsed his father’s pro-crypto policy and expressed support for both Bitcoin and Ethereum on social platform X.
