The crypto casino startup Zero Edge has shut down, and its former leader is facing civil and criminal cases over how the company’s funding was spent.

Federal prosecutors in New York stated in an August 13 indictment that ex-CEO Richard Kim misused nearly all of the $4.3 million raised in the company’s seed round in June.

Court filings claimed that within a week of securing the funds, Kim had redirected about $3.8 million for personal purposes. This included roughly $1 million moved into his own account at Shuffle, a crypto-based gambling and sports betting site.

Investors were reportedly given different explanations for why the funds had dropped. One backer was told that just $710,000 was left due to “day trading”. Others heard that the losses came from a “treasury management strategy”.

Authorities alleged these statements were meant to hide the fact that the money was being spent on Kim’s personal activities.

The Department of Justice has charged him with securities fraud and wire fraud. FBI Assistant Director Christopher Raia noted that Kim “hedged his bets” by providing misleading reassurances to attract more investment while hiding the truth.

After his arrest, Kim allegedly admitted to investigators that he was “clearly wrong from the beginning” and that his actions were “completely unjustifiable”.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had already filed a fraud case in May. The agency claimed that Kim began diverting funds “minutes” after receiving them.

Recently, a ransomware group known as BlackSuit had its systems shut down and around $1 million in cryptocurrency taken by US and international authorities. How did the case unfold? Read the full story.

Hackers Impersonate Coinbase User Support To Scam Victims of $4,000,000 Before Blowing Most of Money on Gambling: ZachXBT https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-impersonate-coinbase-user-support-to-scam-victims-of-4000000-before-blowing-most-of-money-on-gambling-zachxbt/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-impersonate-coinbase-user-support-to-scam-victims-of-4000000-before-blowing-most-of-money-on-gambling-zachxbt/#respond Mon, 23 Jun 2025 18:17:15 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-impersonate-coinbase-user-support-to-scam-victims-of-4000000-before-blowing-most-of-money-on-gambling-zachxbt/

An investigation by top on-chain analyst ZachXBT has revealed how an alleged New York-based con artist stole millions of dollars from victims by pretending to be support staff from Coinbase.

In a thread on the social media platform X, the pseudonymous sleuth details how a man named Christian Nieves – who goes by “Daytwo” and “PawsOnHips” online – allegedly stole $4 million from Coinbase users by impersonating employees at the crypto exchange.

ZachXBT says that Nieves operates a small scam-call center group and also works as a caller. The group allegedly primarily coerces their victims into setting up a Coinbase wallet with an already compromised seed phrase on phishing sites.

Other people in Nieves’ circle also allegedly helped in separate thefts, including a henchman named Justin going as “Paranoia” who executed a $240,000 heist of an elderly victim’s Bitcoin (BTC) wallet.

According to ZachXBT, a portion of that $240,000 was deposited into crypto betting site Roobet, and the rest was converted into Monero (XMR).

“I traced out his casino deposit address which links onchain to 30+ suspected thefts.

I expect there’s many additional victims I am unable to directly link.

While there’s potentially overlap between multiple threat actors the vast majority of activity pertains to Daytwo…

Daytwo has a gambling problem and you’ll see onchain how casino deposits get smaller as he loses funds.

Recently this escalated to the point where he started stealing cuts from accomplices.”

At time of writing, Nieves and his alleged accomplices have not been charged with anything by law enforcement, but given the amount of digital and on-chain evidence, ZachXBT says it should be a “rather easy” case for authorities.

However, most of the victims’ money is likely unrecoverable since it has been lost to gambling, the analyst says.

Filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch Accused of Blowing Netflix Funds on Cryptocurrency https://earlybirdsinvest.com/filmmaker-carl-erik-rinsch-accused-of-blowing-netflix-funds-on-cryptocurrency/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/filmmaker-carl-erik-rinsch-accused-of-blowing-netflix-funds-on-cryptocurrency/#respond Mon, 24 Mar 2025 05:48:58 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/filmmaker-carl-erik-rinsch-accused-of-blowing-netflix-funds-on-cryptocurrency/

A filmmaker is facing charges after allegedly misusing money meant for a Netflix-backed project, according to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office on March 18.

Authorities say Carl Erik Rinsch received millions to develop a science fiction series but instead used a large portion of the funds for high-risk trading and expensive purchases.

Rinsch was arrested on March 18 and faced multiple charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, and illegal financial transactions.

Federal prosecutors claim Netflix sent Rinsch $11 million in March 2020 to cover costs like storyboarding, paying actors, and editing footage for the series, originally called White Horse and later renamed Conquest.

However, instead of funding production, he reportedly moved about $10.5 million into a brokerage account. He made risky investments, including betting on a biopharmaceutical stock, which led to losses of over $5.5 million.

Rinsch continued reassuring Netflix that the series was progressing well, prosecutors said. His trading luck changed in February 2021 when he made several million dollars from cryptocurrency. Rather than reinvesting in the show, authorities say he spent nearly $3.8 million on furniture, high-end watches, antiques, designer clothing, and luxury cars.

Court records indicate Rinsch also used about $1.8 million to pay credit card bills and spent $1 million on legal fees. Some of that money reportedly went toward suing Netflix for additional payments, while the rest covered divorce-related costs.

Rinsch could receive a maximum prison sentence of 20 years for fraud and money laundering, with additional penalties for the financial transaction charges.

Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently offered a $10 million bounty for information leading to the capture of ex-Olympian Ryan Wedding. What is he accused of? Read the full story.
