Chainlink has introduced a new product called Data Streams, which delivers live pricing data for major US equities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) directly onto blockchain networks.

According to an Aug. 4 statement, Data Streams is designed to offer live, low-latency data on major US stocks and ETFs, including popular assets like SPY, QQQ, NVDA, AAPL, and MSFT.

These data streams are now live across 37 blockchain networks, enabling the creation of innovative use-cases such as tokenized stock trading, perpetual futures, and synthetic ETFs.

Chainlink’s data stream

Data Streams aggregate real-time data from multiple primary and backup sources to ensure continuous uptime. This information is processed through Chainlink’s decentralized oracle networks (DONs) and delivered on-chain using a structured format.

Importantly, each data point is timestamped, allowing platforms to differentiate between fresh and outdated prices. This feature also supports the automatic suspension of trading during market closures, ensuring that trading is paused during off-hours.

These innovations enable developers to build advanced financial products like perpetual contracts, lending and borrowing platforms, synthetic ETFs, and other complex financial instruments.

With the RWA market projected to reach $30 trillion by 2030, this infrastructure is becoming increasingly vital for ensuring security and scalability in tokenized equity markets.

Chainlink’s Chief Business Officer, Johann Eid, remarked that Data Streams are essential in bridging the gap between traditional finance and blockchain technology.

According to him:

“This is a significant leap forward for tokenized markets—closing a critical gap between traditional finance and blockchain infrastructure.”

Notably, top DeFi protocols like GMX and Kamino Finance have already adopted Data Streams.

Speaking on the integration, Kamino Finance’s co-founder, Thomas Short, emphasized that Data Streams would help the platform enhance its user experience by providing a seamless interface while maintaining trust and security across supported projects.

He added:

“The launch of Data Streams for US equities and ETFs is a critical milestone toward a truly composable onchain financial system that matches the scale and sophistication of traditional markets.”

The following is a guest post and opinion from Adrian Brinkn, Co-Founder of Anoma and Namada.

Decentralization is the most misunderstood word in the blockchain industry. It’s become a dogma, a checkbox, and a marketing slogan. But decentralization is not the prize; it’s just a tool. The real goal is not decentralization; it’s sovereignty—the practical ability for individuals and communities to control their own infrastructure, assets, and data on their own terms, without being forced to trust some distant cartel of validators or a global network that can be captured, censored, or simply go offline. That is fundamentally why this space exists.

Right now, we’ve built these massive global networks—Ethereum, Bitcoin, take your pick—that are supposed to be trustless and unstoppable. But in reality, we’re just shifting trust from banks and states to a single global validator set. Even if the network is decentralized, relying on a singular network is not.

That is a core tenet in the global misunderstanding of what decentralization means. It is not just the decentralization of a singular network, but rather it is a plurality of decentralized networks.

The Limits of Global Networks and the Illusion of Trustlessness

It may not be a popular opinion, but I believe it to be apparent that the Bitcoin network will not survive a WWIII scenario.

If you can’t run your own infrastructure, if you can’t transact or coordinate when the global network is down or hostile, you’re not sovereign. You’re just renting sovereignty from someone else who is in charge of maintaining it. A blockchain you can’t deploy locally is not actually sovereign. If your community, DAO, or even your country can’t keep its own system running when the cables are cut or the global network is captured, then all the decentralization in the world is just theater.

Truly sovereign networks need to be resilient, meaning that they can be run as local as required and as global as possible.

In order to achieve this, we need infrastructure that defaults to local sovereignty and only uses global consensus when it actually makes sense. In a multipolar world—or just a world where the internet breaks or is shut down when the cables are cut by a hostile actor—you want your local economy, your organization, and your community to keep operating. If the global network is gone, you shouldn’t lose access to your assets, your coordination tools, or your ability to transact.

This is not some doomer fantasy; things have and often do go wrong. Digital infrastructure should be conflict-resistant by design, not just by hope. If you’re forced to rely on a single global network to keep your systems alive, you’re just one step away from the same old centralization—just with more cryptography.

The way most people use Ethereum today is dangerously close to a “one world government” for crypto. Everyone’s assets, identities, and governance are tied to a single global machine. That’s a huge attack surface, both technically and socially. It’s also the opposite of what we want: a world where communities can define their own rules, their own security assumptions, and their own trust models. We need heterogeneous trust.

Not every application, not every community, wants or needs to trust the same set of validators or the same governance process.

Sovereignty Means Owning Your Stack

If there’s one thing the last decade has taught us, it’s that digital infrastructure is fragile. Hacks, government overreach, regulatory capture, and even plain old technical failures can take down systems we thought were “unstoppable.” The only way to build systems that survive is to make them resilient by default. That means you should be able to run your own infrastructure, even if the rest of the world is offline. You should be able to interact with global networks when you want, but never be forced to trust them with your core operations.

If your data is public, it’s not yours. Privacy isn’t a luxury—or at least it shouldn’t be. It is, however, a prerequisite for sovereignty.

Why should a DAO in Buenos Aires or a co-op in Berlin have to trust the same validator set as everyone else? Sovereignty means picking your own trust model. Maybe you want to use local validators you know and trust. Maybe you want to federate with other communities. Maybe you want to run solo. The point is, you get to choose. Not some politician or founder, not some foundation, and not a cartel of validators on the other side of the world.

We’re already seeing communities experiment with local currencies, DAOs, and governance models that fit their own specific needs. This is the future: a patchwork of sovereign systems, interoperating when it makes sense, but never forced into a single global mold. If the global network goes down, your local economy keeps humming. If the global network gets captured, your community doesn’t lose everything.

True sovereignty means owning your stack, your rules, your destiny.

If we want blockchain to achieve the goals we all hope it can in the long run, we need to stop worshipping decentralization for its own sake and start building for sovereignty. The future isn’t a single global ledger. It’s a world of sovereign actors—individuals, communities, organizations—each with the power to define their own fate. Decentralization is the tool. Sovereignty is the goal.

“By integrating Wormhole into the XRP Ledger, we’re helping unlock even greater potential spanning all major blockchains for one of the most established blockchain networks in enterprise finance,” Robinson Burkey, Co-Founder of the Wormhole Foundation, said.

As Ripple doubles down on interoperability, market watchers will be looking for signs that these efforts could translate into renewed momentum for XRP.

XRP Ledger Upgrade Adds Institutional Tokens

As reported, RippleX, the development arm of Ripple, has rolled out version 2.5.0 of the XRP Ledger, introducing several protocol upgrades aimed at strengthening network functionality and security.

RippleX engineer Mayukha Vadari has called the upgrade “possibly the best single lineup of amendments” ever released, introducing significant improvements to token management and transaction processing.

The XLS-85 amendment upgrades the escrow system by allowing third-party issued tokens, including stablecoins, and introduces multi-purpose tokens designed for institutional applications.

Another key change, XLS-56, enables wrapper transactions that can combine up to eight steps into a single action, aiming to lower failure rates in complex transaction flows and improve network efficiency for advanced use cases.

The new update comes as the XRP Ledger has recorded a surge in user activity, with the number of daily active addresses climbing from an average of 35,000 to over 295,000.

Alongside growing usage, the number of whale wallets holding over 1 million XRP has reached an all-time high of 2,700 — a milestone not seen in the 12-year history of the protocol.

The rise in large holders may reflect growing institutional or high-net-worth conviction in XRP’s long-term value.

In May, VivoPower also invested $121 million in XRP as a strategic reserve, making it the first company in the world with an XRP-focused treasury.

Zama Raises $57M in Series B to Bring End-to-End Encryption to Public Blockchains

  • With new backing by leading U.S. blockchain investors, Zama becomes the world’s first Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) unicorn.
  • Funding coincides with the announcement of the Zama Protocol, which enables confidential applications on any blockchain.

Zama, the open-source cryptography company building state-of-the-art Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) solutions for blockchain, announced a $57 million Series B funding round co-led by U.S.-based investment firms Blockchange Ventures and Pantera Capital, bringing Zama’s total funding to over $150 million, and its valuation to north of a billion USD. The new funding will support Zama’s mainnet launch, ecosystem adoption, and research efforts to make financial applications built with FHE scale to thousands of transactions per second.

The timing of Zama’s announcement reflects the accelerating demand within the finance ecosystem for technologies that enable confidential, scalable, and compliant onchain financial applications.

“With this latest raise, Zama becomes the world’s first unicorn in the FHE space, which is a major milestone for the industry. Reaching a $1 billion valuation represents a significant increase that reflects the market’s confidence in our FHE technology and our team’s ability to deliver confidentiality to financial applications onchain” said Dr Rand Hindi, CEO and co-founder of Zama.

The funding coincides with the announcement of Zama’s Confidential Blockchain Protocol and its public testnet in July 2025, enabling developers to build confidential applications through Zama’s FHEVM, with support for other EVM chains and Solana to follow.

Ken Seiff, Co-Managing Partner of Blockchange Ventures, said: “Not since I first saw Ethereum in 2014, have I seen a company commercializing an entirely new technology that could be as foundational to our global technology infrastructure. As finance moves onchain and regulations tighten globally, public blockchains are likely to be the first beneficiaries of what Zama is building. But the opportunity goes well beyond that, as industries such as health care, defense, and virtually all others that use cloud computing could massively benefit from the stepchange in confidentiality and compliance pioneered by FHE, and in particular, Zama.”

“Zama’s FHE protocol launch is a cryptography milestone. Zama’s FHEVM makes it possible to run confidential smart contracts on encrypted data, guaranteeing both confidentiality and composability. Blockchain-native confidentiality unlocks several use cases:

  • Onchain Finance: Zama enables financial institutions to securely use public blockchains for a range of applications, including confidential stablecoin issuance and payments, asset tokenization, compliance, and more.
  • Confidential Tokens: The ability to keep balances and amounts encrypted onchain enables blockchain companies to distribute tokens confidentially. Investors, team members and other token holders no longer have to publicly disclose their ownership, allowing them to better manage their portfolio and reduce the risk of being targeted by hackers.

Zama will use the fresh funding to advance the field of FHE and further commercialize its accessibility to blockchain applications and beyond. Zama is actively addressing the core challenges that have historically held back FHE adoption:

  • Speed: At current benchmarks, Zama’s FHE technology is 100x faster than when the company was founded, and is now capable of supporting most onchain payment use cases. A new report from Flashbots has warned that Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) is quietly becoming one of the biggest roadblocks to blockchain scaling.

According to the research, rampant “spam auctions” driven by MEV searchers are systematically consuming most of the new capacity on high-throughput chains like Solana and Ethereum Layer-2s (L2s), neutralizing scaling gains and driving up user fees.

The Scale of MEV-Induced Waste

MEV, the extra profit miners or bots can extract by reordering transactions, has long been controversial. But Flashbots’ latest deep dive shows that the problem has escalated from an ethical debate to a measurable drag on blockchain performance.

Analyzing data from OP-Stack rollups like Base and Optimism mainnet, alongside findings from Solana, the Flashbots survey showed how high-frequency arbitrage bots flood networks with countless speculative transactions in search of quick profits.

According to researcher Bert Miller, bots on Solana use about 40% of its blockspace while contributing a mere 7% of total fees. Meanwhile, on Ethereum L2s like Base and OP mainnet, spam bots reportedly eat up more than half of the available gas but pay a fraction of the costs compared to legitimate users.

Miller shared one stark example on X: Between November 2024 and February 2025, Base boosted its throughput by 11 million gas per second, roughly the same as three Ethereum mainnets, only to see pretty much all of it absorbed by spam bots.

He stressed that the core issue lies in how the bots operate. Usually, private mempools, designed to shield their users from frontrunning, leave MEV searchers blind to real-time order flows. Therefore, to stay competitive, these bots tend to deploy complex transactions on-chain to probe for arbitrage, resulting in mountains of wasted computation when no profit exists.

Miller noted that one successful two-hop arbitrage may cost as much as 132 million gas in failed attempts, which is about the size of four Ethereum blocks per win.

According to him, this dynamic means that while blockchains can technically expand throughput, MEV spam creates an economic ceiling that makes raw ramping up inefficient and costly for everyone else. The Flashbots thesis called this the “dominant limit to scaling blockchains” and proposed overhauling how networks handle transaction ordering.

Path to Economic Efficiency

The research organization’s suggested fix combines “programmable privacy,” which gives searchers enough visibility to avoid spam while shielding users from predatory strategies, with explicit bidding for transaction priority. This way, it believes competition will shift from brute-force spamming to transparent, price-based auctions.

In another X post, Miller revealed that some early experiments, like using Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to enforce bot behavior, are already live. Last year, his compatriot Angela Lu announced that Flashbots had run tests, where they embedded a bot inside a secure enclave, letting it capture arbitrage opportunities trustlessly while preventing malicious tactics like sandwich attacks.

Only recently, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao floated the idea of dark pools using zero-knowledge proof to counter the MEV menace in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. Furthermore, last year, blockchain oracle provider Chainlink introduced a solution dubbed Smart Value Recapture (SVR) that would enable DeFi apps to reclaim “non-toxic” MEV.

If refined, innovations like these could hopefully transform MEV from a hidden drain into a source of sustainable revenue for chains, while lowering fees for everyday users.
