The Royal Government of Bhutan has cut its Bitcoin exposure by selling more than $92 million of the top digital asset during the recent market downturn.

On Aug. 18, blockchain analysis platform Onchain Lens reported that Bhutan moved 799.69 BTC, valued at approximately $92.06 million, into two new wallets. According to the firm, these transfers would likely be sent to a centralized exchange (CEX), potentially Binance, ahead of the sale.

The timing aligns with the recent volatility in the crypto market. Bitcoin briefly surged to a new all-time high (ATH) of $124,167 on Aug. 14, according to CryptoSlate price data. Since then, the asset has retraced more than 7% to around $115,165 at the time of writing.

Despite the recent sales, Bhutan retains a substantial crypto portfolio. Bitcoin Treasuries data ranks the country as the fifth-largest national Bitcoin holder, surpassing El Salvador.

Arkham Intelligence data shows that Bhutan still holds roughly 9,969 BTC, valued at about $1.15 billion. In addition, the nation maintains around 656 ETH, worth approximately $2.81 million at current prices.

In a move that caught many by surprise, the Royal Government of Bhutan sold nearly $60 million worth of Bitcoin in just four days. According to on‑chain data from Arkham Intelligence, the country shifted 512.84 BTC between July 10 and July 14. That haul represents a small slice of its overall stash, but it still adds up to a hefty sum.

Strategic Profit Taking

Based on reports tied to its sovereign investment arm, Bhutan’s wallet sent six separate Bitcoin transfers to Binance during that period.

One single transfer moved 208.56 BTC—about $23.18 million—while others involved 100 BTC, 99 BTC, and smaller chunks. Those sales total $59.47 million, according to Lookonchain’s figures. It looks like the government timed its sales to match Bitcoin’s push into new highs.

Strong Remaining Holdings

Despite those outflows, Bhutan hasn’t given up on crypto. It still holds 11,411 BTC, valued at roughly $1.4 billion at current prices.

According to Arkham’s tracking dashboard, the country’s crypto treasury went from $1.29 billion last week to $1.37 billion by July 14—a jump of $73.33 million in just seven days.

Part of that gain came from a 12.4% intra‑week Bitcoin price rise, which saw the coin climb from $108,000 to $122,000.

ETH Balance Steady Amid Price Gains

The government’s Ethereum pile remains at 656 ETH, worth about $1.93 million today. While the quantity of ETH hasn’t changed in the past week, an 18% boost in ETH price has lifted the value of that holding.

News of this has stirred talk about how small changes in a big portfolio can still move the needle when markets run hot.

Context From Earlier Moves

According to reports, Bhutan’s wallet holdings rose from $1.26 billion to $1.30 billion between July 3 and July 10—even after it transferred 213 BTC (worth close to $24 million) to Binance.

Those figures suggest the government is actively managing its crypto stash, trimming exposure when prices spike but letting gains pile up when markets rally.

Market Conditions And Volatility

Bitcoin spent weeks consolidating between $105,000 and $108,000 before blasting past $121,000 on July 13. That same day, Bhutan off‑loaded the $23 million stash.

Around that time, the US slapped new 30% tariffs on the EU and Mexico—moves that might have hurt risk assets in past cycles. Yet Bitcoin shrugged off the news and vaulted to $122,400 on Coinbase.

The Royal Government of Bhutan has transferred a significant portion of its Bitcoin holdings to Binance, raising speculation about potential asset offloading during a high point in the market.

According to data from blockchain analytics platform Arkham, Bhutan moved 212.31 BTC, worth roughly over $23 million, to a Binance deposit address early Thursday, just hours after Bitcoin briefly surpassed its previous all-time high.

Strategic Transfers and Onchain Footprints

This is not the first such transaction from the Himalayan kingdom. Arkham data reveals that this latest transfer comes just one week after Bhutan deposited 136.99 BTC (valued at over $14 million) to the same exchange.

The frequency and timing of these transactions have drawn attention, particularly as they appear to coincide with Bitcoin’s price peaks. Notably, a similar deposit worth $33 million was made in November 2024 when Bitcoin was approaching the $100,000 mark.

Although Bhutan has not made a public statement explaining these movements, onchain analysts often interpret large deposits to centralized exchanges as a precursor to potential sales.

These transactions continue a pattern of activity suggesting that the country may be using market rallies as opportunities to liquidate portions of its digital asset holdings.

As of now, Bhutan retains approximately 11,711 BTC, valued at over $1.2 billion, making up about 40% of its gross domestic product, according to Arkham data. Its only other notable cryptocurrency holding is 656 ETH (roughly $1.8 million), some of which was transferred to Binance in May.

The assets are managed through Druk Holding & Investments, the country’s state-owned investment firm. This centralized oversight has allowed Bhutan to quietly build a sizable digital asset portfolio over the past few years.

In fact, Bhutan now ranks as the sixth-largest known nation-state holder of Bitcoin. It follows the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and North Korea, according to public data aggregated by Bitcoin Treasuries.

Hydropower, Bitcoin Mining, and Self-Sustained Reserves

Unlike several other countries that have accumulated Bitcoin via asset seizures and legal enforcement actions, Bhutan appears to have taken a different route.

According to blockchain data and transaction patterns, the country has mined much of its BTC directly, reportedly through mining pool services like Ant Pool.

Bhutan’s mining operations are believed to make use of its supply of hydroelectric energy, offering a relatively low-cost and environmentally sustainable means of acquiring Bitcoin.

This mining-centric approach aligns with Bhutan’s broader economic strategy of using renewable energy to drive digital innovation. By converting its hydroelectric surplus into Bitcoin, Bhutan is capitalizing on a clean energy advantage in a space often criticized for its environmental footprint.
