Crypto protocols raised $1.9 billion in August, down 30% from July’s $2.67 billion, according to DefiLlama data.

Despite the monthly drop, August numbers for raises from venture capital funds align with the numbers recorded in July, with $600 million captured from PUMP’s public sale last month.

DeFi protocols dominated August funding with multiple major raises, including Portal’s $50 million round, M0’s $40 million Series B, and aPriori’s $20 million strategic investment.

The sector attracted consistent institutional capital across infrastructure and trading platforms.

Additionally, the third quarter already surpassed the second quarter’s $4.54 billion totals with $4.57 billion captured in just two months.

AI and infrastructure growth

AI protocols secured substantial funding, with Everlyn raising $15 million and multiple AI-focused projects completing seed rounds.

The convergence of crypto and AI continues attracting venture interest as protocols develop decentralized computing and data solutions. Cybersecurity emerged as another major category with IVIX completing a $60 million Series B, the month’s largest traditional venture round.

Stablecoin infrastructure also drew capital, with Rain securing $58 million in Series B funding.

Payment infrastructure attracted diverse funding. OrangeX completed a $20 million Series B and multiple smaller rounds supporting cross-border and merchant payment solutions. The category benefits from increasing crypto adoption in commercial applications.

Gaming protocols also received some attention, such as Overtake’s $7 million round and continued development funding across multiple projects.

The sector benefits from increased adoption of blockchain-based gaming mechanics and token economies.

Public token sales lose ground

Without a high-profile token sale, such as Pump.fun’s, public token sales represented only $30.7 million across seven projects, including Lombard’s $6.75 million and Almanak’s dual raises totaling nearly $11 million.

Public token sales provide direct community participation while reducing dependence on institutional venture capital.

Layer-2 solutions secured strategic investments with Bitlayer raising $5 million through public token sales and Hemi Labs completing a $15 million growth round.

The third quarter’s performance demonstrates sustained institutional interest despite monthly fluctuations.

Bitcoin jumps to $113k as US producer prices shock with surprise August drop https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-jumps-to-113k-as-us-producer-prices-shock-with-surprise-august-drop/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-jumps-to-113k-as-us-producer-prices-shock-with-surprise-august-drop/#respond Wed, 10 Sep 2025 13:18:45 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-jumps-to-113k-as-us-producer-prices-shock-with-surprise-august-drop/

US producer prices fell in August, reinforcing a weaker inflation outlook just a day after major revisions showed US employment levels overstated by nearly one million jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Producer Price Index declined 0.1 percent on the month, below forecasts for a 0.4 percent increase. Core PPI also fell 0.1 percent, with annual readings slowing to 2.8 percent from 3.4 percent in July.

The release follows last week’s data showing August nonfarm payrolls added only 22,000 positions, while unemployment rose to 4.3 percent. A separate benchmark revision revealed total employment had been overstated by 911,000 jobs, bringing the cumulative downward adjustment over the past year to 1.5 million.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the corrections showed the Federal Reserve maintained restrictive policy based on incomplete data.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent on the month and 3.7 percent from a year earlier, matching forecasts.

Combined with revised productivity figures showing a 3.3 percent gain in the second quarter and unit labor costs up just 1 percent, the inflation backdrop has eased. Still, services inflation remains firm, with the ISM prices index near 69 in August.

Markets rallied on the softer PPI print, viewing it as support for Federal Reserve rate cuts at the September policy meeting.

Bitcoin rose 1.1 percent to $113,449, while Ethereum gained 1.2 percent to $4,372. The S&P 500 climbed 0.34 percent to $654, extending earlier gains as investors priced in easier financial conditions.

Why American Eagle Outfitters Rallied in August https://earlybirdsinvest.com/why-american-eagle-outfitters-rallied-in-august/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/why-american-eagle-outfitters-rallied-in-august/#respond Sun, 07 Sep 2025 20:55:26 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/why-american-eagle-outfitters-rallied-in-august/ The Sydney Sweeney ad campaign got a thumbs-up from President Trump, while the company also announced a new collaboration with Travis Kelce.

Shares of American Eagle Outfitters (AEO 0.21%) rallied 19.8% in August, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

American Eagle capitalized on July’s optimism regarding its new ad campaign starring actress Sydney Sweeney when President Trump endorsed the company’s campaign in early August. Then later in the month, American Eagle announced a collaboration with Kansas City Chiefs tight end and Taylor Swift fiancée Travis Kelce.

American Eagle’s investment in celebrity pays off

American Eagle’s stock got a bump in late July when it launched a controversial ad with actress Sydney Sweeney with the byline, “Sydney Sweeney has Great Genes Jeans.” While the stock then faded after an initial lift, President Trump weighed in in early August, writing on his social media platform Truth Social that the ad was, “the HOTTEST out there…the jeans are flying off the shelves.”

In response, investors bid up the stock, thinking the controversy might boost publicity for the brand and therefore subsequent sales.

Then later in the month, American Eagle announced a limited addition collaboration with Travis Kelce’s “Tru Colors” clothing line, which Kelce began in 2019. The new limited edition collection is to be unveiled in two “drops,” with one on Aug. 27, and another upcoming on Sept. 24. As luck would have it, the collaboration announcement came one day after Kelce announced his engagement to music star Taylor Swift.

So, American Eagle nabbed a marketing coup in both late July and into August, grabbing support from the President, as well as arguably two of the biggest celebrities in sports and entertainment.

What will it mean for the stock, though?

The high-profile marketing push — both planned and unplanned – appeared to boost American Eagle’s near-term outlook. On Sept. 3, the company reported its second-quarter earnings results for the quarter ending Aug. 2, beating analyst expectations even though sales and comparable-store sales were each down 1%.

However, management said it was seeing “an uptick in customer awareness, engagement and comparable sales,” as a result of the Sweeney and Kelce campaigns, and projected comps to return to positive low single digits in both Q3 and Q4. That improvement would appear to validate the impact of the Sweeney and Kelce campaigns.

That said, despite a near-20% gain in August and a 20%-plus gain in September thus far, American Eagle’s stock is only up about 12.8% on the year and is still actually 2.3% below where it was one year ago. A cautious consumer, high interest rates, and the Trump administration’s tariffs have all acted as headwinds to the clothing retailer, as it has to many retailers.

Phishing scams cost users over $12M in August — Here's how to stay safe https://earlybirdsinvest.com/phishing-scams-cost-users-over-12m-in-august-heres-how-to-stay-safe/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/phishing-scams-cost-users-over-12m-in-august-heres-how-to-stay-safe/#respond Sat, 06 Sep 2025 21:26:37 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/phishing-scams-cost-users-over-12m-in-august-heres-how-to-stay-safe/

Phishing scams, attacks disguised as legitimate communication or websites designed to steal funds and sensitive information, cost crypto users over $12 million in August, up 72% from July, Web3 anti-scam service Scam Sniffer reported on Saturday.

Crypto phishing scams impacted 15,230 victims in August, a 67% increase from July, with the single largest loss costing one user over $3 million, according to Scam Sniffer.

The Scam Sniffer team also noted a “sharp escalation” in EIP-7702 signature scams. EIP-7702 is an Ethereum improvement proposal that allows Externally Owned Accounts to act as smart contract wallets that can execute transactions and shift funds.

Scammers and hackers exploiting this functionality drained over $5.6 million in August through three separate attacks, Scam Sniffer said.

Scams and cybersecurity exploits continue to be a problem in crypto, with over $163 million stolen in August through malicious activity. The persistent threat is a reminder for crypto users to remain vigilant and practice good anti-phishing and anti-scam security measures.

Good practices for staying safe against phishing scams

Losses from crypto hacks and scams crossed $3.1 billion in the first half of 2025 amid increasingly sophisticated attack methods.

Scammers often target users by posing as legitimate and well-known cryptocurrency exchanges, either setting up fake websites with similar URL addresses to legitimate exchanges or sending fake communications to users.

These communications include emails, text messages, and even physical letters sent through the mail, designed to steal sensitive user information, including seed phrases for crypto wallets and passwords to online accounts.

Typically, the scammers will pretend to be customer service agents from reputable exchanges, claiming that the user’s account is facing some sort of threat or cybersecurity issue and demand personal information from the user, including seed phrases.

Good practices to avoid phishing scams include checking URLs for tiny mistakes and bookmarking pages instead of using search engines or the search bar to access websites every time, verifying website links, and avoiding downloading attachments or clicking links from unknown sources.

Phishing scams often contain misspelled words or grammatical errors, and any of these mistakes is a red flag; users should read through messages carefully to detect such errors.

Crypto and Web3 users should also use virtual private networks (VPNs) to mask their IP addresses and physical locations, never give out seed phrases or passwords, and enable two-factor authentication for sensitive online accounts.

Shares of AI software company C3.ai (AI 1.03%) sank in August, falling 28.2% during the month, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

C3.ai pre-announced its fiscal first-quarter results, disclosing that it would miss its initial guidance by a whopping 30%. Needless to say, the market didn’t take too kindly to the news.

C3.ai misses badly and faces uncertainty going forward with a new CEO

On Aug. 8, C3.ai pre-announced that its fiscal first-quarter revenue would only be about $70.3 million, with adjusted (non-GAAP) operating losses of roughly negative $57.8 million. That’s a massive miss, considering initial guidance for the quarter was about $104.5 million in revenue and negative $28.5 million in adjusted operating losses at the midpoint.

C3.ai Chairman and now former CEO Thomas Siebel noted he had been having some health issues that prevented him from being present at sales meetings, and that he had underestimated the impact of his absence in closing deals.

As a result, C3.ai revamped its sales organization, announcing four new hires and one promotion in its sales organization. Subsequently in September, when C3.ai eventually did report earnings, the company also announced Stephen Ehikian as its new CEO, while Siebel will remain as executive chairman.

Down 55% this year, is a turnaround possible?

With a miss that big and now a new CEO, it’s no wonder C3.ai is down a whopping 55% on the year.

The good news is that the company still has a rock-solid balance sheet, with $711 million in cash and no debt. Furthermore, the company’s new CEO is a software entrepreneur who has previously sold two AI-focused software companies to Salesforce (CRM 2.62%).

So, C3.ai investors aren’t without hope. Yet with a big miss on the quarter and continued operating losses, it’s hard for investors to get their heads around C3.ai’s prospects, which have been disappointing to say the least, despite the rise of generative AI. With so much in flux, this remains a situation to watch from the sidelines for now.

This story appeared in The Logoff, a daily newsletter that helps you stay informed about the Trump administration without letting political news take over your life. Subscribe here.

Welcome to The Logoff: The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly jobs report this morning, and the numbers aren’t looking good for the US economy, or President Donald Trump’s tariffs scheme.

What happened in the US economy last month? The US added just 22,000 jobs in August, according to the BLS, while unemployment reached 4.3 percent — its highest rate in years, though only a small increase from the month before.

Not only is 22,000 jobs far fewer than the 75,000 that had been predicted, but new revisions to data from previous months are making the economic picture look even worse: Rather than adding jobs in June, the BLS said Friday, the US lost 13,000 jobs.

Why does the jobs report matter? The jobs report is a closely watched indicator of the broader health of the US economy, and Friday’s flagging numbers are the latest sign that all is not well, especially as Trump’s tariffs, which took effect in early August, start to have a greater impact.

Friday’s report is particularly noteworthy given how Trump reacted to last month’s report, which also made substantial downward revisions to jobs numbers for May and June. Trump attacked the report’s accuracy and fired the director of the BLS, Erika McEntarfer. To replace her, he nominated E.J. Antoni, a deeply underqualified right-wing economist (who may have difficulty getting confirmed by the Senate).

What does this mean going forward? This is the second consecutive jobs report that has delivered bad news; a clearer picture of an economy in trouble, with no clear respite on the horizon, is starting to emerge. New inflation data next week could be yet more bad news if tariffs drive prices higher, as expected.

The one bright spot for Trump is that he’s now more likely to get the rate cut he’s been looking — and agitating — for when the Federal Reserve meets later this month, as the central bank responds to a slumping economy.

And with that, it’s time to log off…

I’m looking forward to the new season of The Great British Bake Off, which returns today in the US. This New Yorker story, from former contestant Ruby Tandoh, is a delightful look at what it’s like to be on the show, from the application process to the tent itself. You can read it here, but fair warning: You might leave the piece craving a sweet treat. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here on Monday!

These Were the 3 Worst-Performing Stocks in the S&P 500 in August 2025 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/these-were-the-3-worst-performing-stocks-in-the-sp-500-in-august-2025/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/these-were-the-3-worst-performing-stocks-in-the-sp-500-in-august-2025/#respond Thu, 04 Sep 2025 14:28:59 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/these-were-the-3-worst-performing-stocks-in-the-sp-500-in-august-2025/ Key Points
  • There are concerns that stricter privacy rules could hurt The Trade Desk’s main business.

  • Super Micro Computer cut its fiscal 2026 guidance by $7 billion, sending its shares south.

  • Gartner’s total contract value increased year over year, but not by as much as investors hoped.

  • 10 stocks we like better than The Trade Desk ›

August was a good month for the S&P 500. The stock market’s most-followed index finished the period up 1.91%, marking its fourth consecutive month of positive returns and fifth overall positive month of 2025. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good month for all stocks in the index.

Three stocks in particular had a really bad month: The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD), Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI), and Gartner (NYSE: IT). These stocks lost between 25% to 37% of their value in the month.

The reason for the disappointing month varies. The Trade Desk’s revenue growth has slowed (up 19% year over year to $694 million), and its new chief financial officer took over on Aug. 21 after its previous one stepped down after almost 12 years with the company. There are also concerns that stricter privacy rules will hurt the company’s ability to use targeted advertising, its main business proposition.

Super Micro Computer’s fiscal fourth-quarter results weren’t very encouraging, with the company missing both revenue and adjusted earnings per share estimates. It also cut its fiscal 2026 guidance from $40 billion to $33 billion, which discouraged investors, as the company was already trading at a premium.

Gartner met analysts’ estimates for the second quarter, but its total contract value (a key part of its business) increased by a light 4.9% year over year. This led the company to cut its 2025 revenue guidance and note that its business demand could slow down.

Bitcoin closes August badly – now turn to $100,000 support https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-closes-august-badly-now-turn-to-100000-support/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-closes-august-badly-now-turn-to-100000-support/#respond Wed, 03 Sep 2025 06:17:21 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-closes-august-badly-now-turn-to-100000-support/

Bitcoin starts under pressure in September after a cruel end in August. Now, all eyes are $100,000. Bitcoin closed a disappointing week for the Bulls in August. After winning a new all-time high just over $124,000 in mid-August, Bitcoin closed three red candles in a row on its weekly charts. The candles for the past week close to a low low, blowing away momentum.

The MACD oscillator also confirmed a bearish cross at the end of each week. This should help maintain the downward pressure that comes in this week. The RSI currently sits in a relatively neutral position just above the 50 line, but it’s the lowest level since mid-April.

This first week of September saw Bitcoin drop to test support levels from price integrations from May to June. The Bulls are looking for a large number of nodes, ranging from around $104,000 to keep the price, and can ideally prevent this week’s candle from falling below that level. Through this support, the Bears will attempt to return the price to the Key 1.618 Fibonacci expansion level from Bear Market in 2022 for $102,000. Closing under $102,000 this week is a very bad thing for the Bulls. This would be very bad as it threatens to test your last major swing at $98,000, below the infamous laser eye level of $100,000.

Taking $100,000 on the downside gives a lot of weight to the paper “long-term top.” $96,000 is basically the Bulls’ final line of defense, if the price can slip through all these upper support levels.

So heading into this week, look for buyers to step in and try to turn things into order at the $105,000 level. The Bulls are turning right this week on the ship and putting in some kind of inverted candle to turn things around. But for now, the bear is in full control and is about to continue selling pressure in September.

Big Drop of Bitcoin: Can the Bulls save $100,000 level?

Terminology Guide:

Bulls/Bully: A buyer or investor expects prices to rise.

Bear/Bear: Sellers or investors who expect prices to drop.

Support or Support Level: At least at the beginning, the level at which the asset’s price is retained. The more touches you have in support, the more likely it will be to be weaker and will not be able to hold the price.

Resistance or Resistance Level: Opposition to support. At least at the beginning, there is a high probability of rejecting the price. The more resistance touches and the weaker the more likely it is to be unable to keep the price down.

Fibonacci retrace and extensions: Ratios based on what is known as the Golden Ratio, a universal ratio related to natural growth and collapse cycles. The golden ratio is based on the constants PHI (1.618) and PHI (0.618).

Oscillator: A technical indicator that differs over time, but usually remains within the band between set levels. Therefore, they vibrate between low levels (usually representing conditions for sale) and high levels (usually representing terms for acquisition). For example, relative strength index (RSI) and moving average convergence force (MACD).

Macd Oscillator: Moving Average Convergence Divergence is a momentum oscillator that shows motion and momentum to subtract the difference between two moving averages.

RSI Oscillator: The relative strength index is a kinetic oscillator that moves between 0 and 100. Measures the change in price speed and the speed of price movement. If the RSI is above 70, it is considered to be over-purchased. If the RSI is below 30, it is considered to be oversold.

August

Node Updates

MimbleWimbleCoin (MWC) v5.3.10

  • Transaction fee limits: safeguards to prevent unexpectedly high fees.
  • New “offline” mode: run in a mode better suited for cold wallet setups (prepare and sign transactions without network access).

We recommend upgrading if you use cold storage or routinely craft transactions for offline signing.

Ergo (ERG) 6.0.1

  • Versioned block transaction serializer since 6.0: ensures the correct serializer version is used going forward.
  • Candidate regeneration fixes: stability improvements while preparing block candidates.
  • Indexed node API additions: endpoint to fetch blocks with full transactions.
  • UTXO queries refined: option to exclude mempool-spent outputs across all “unspent” endpoints.
  • Unconfirmed TX detail: endpoint now returns full inputs with proofs for pending transactions.

This maintenance release focuses on correctness, API completeness, and smoother block candidate handling.

Zcash (ZEC) v6.3.0

Network Upgrade 6.1 (NU6.1) preparations are included in this release.

  • ZIP 271: Deferred Dev Fund Lockbox Disbursement.
  • ZIP 1016 (partial): Community and Coinholder Funding Model.
  • Activation (testnet): NU6.1 activates at height 3,536,500.
  • Regtest control: can be activated at a specific height using -nuparams=4dec4df0:HEIGHT.
  • Testing note: during the test phase, consensus rules may change; if so, testnet will be rolled back in v6.10.0 and re-activated a second time (see ZIP 255 for deployment process).

Bug fix: corrected accounting for unshielding transactions spending Orchard notes in transparent balance-related RPCs (e.g., getbalance, gettransaction), aligning behavior with earlier fixes for Sprout/Sapling.

Default updated: -preferredtxversion now defaults to 5 (NU5 format). Use -preferredtxversion=4 to retain the previous behavior.

Block Reward Reductions

Karlsen (KLS)

Per the Karlsencoin tokenomics and emission schedule, the block reward decreased:

  • Previous: 29.71 KLS
  • New: 28.89 KLS

Please pay attention! 2CryptoCalc has been updated accordingly.

Kaspa (KAS)

As part of the Kaspa emission schedule and Crescendo hard fork process, another planned reduction occurred:

  • Previous: 4.90 KAS
  • New: 4.62 KAS

Please pay attention! 2CryptoCalc reflects the new reward.

Bitcoin Network Hashrate Returned to All-Time Highs in August: JPMorgan https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-network-hashrate-returned-to-all-time-highs-in-august-jpmorgan/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-network-hashrate-returned-to-all-time-highs-in-august-jpmorgan/#respond Tue, 02 Sep 2025 15:03:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-network-hashrate-returned-to-all-time-highs-in-august-jpmorgan/

The Bitcoin network hashrate returned to record highs last month, increasing around 50 exahashes per second (EH/s) to an average of 949 EH/s, Wall Street bank JPMorgan (JPM) said in a research report Tuesday.

The hashrate refers to the total combined computational power used to mine and process transactions on a proof-of-work blockchain, and is a proxy for competition in the industry and mining difficulty.

The total market cap of the 13 U.S-listed bitcoin miners the bank tracks also hit a record high in August, with high-performance computing (HPC) execution driving the gains.

TeraWulf (WULF) announced a colocation deal with Fluidstack and IREN (IREN) expanded its GPU fleet, the bank noted.

With the hashrate at a record, mining profitability declined from the previous month as the bitcoin price fell.
