Google Play has announced new licensing requirements for crypto wallet app developers in certain regions, but the update excludes applications that allow users to control their own assets.

Starting October 29, companies offering custodial crypto services through the Google Play Store will be expected to follow regulatory guidelines. These include registering with financial authorities and following industry compliance rules.

However, crypto wallets that let individuals manage their own funds, often called non-custodial wallets, will not be impacted.

The policy applies to crypto wallet providers operating in more than 15 regions, including both the United States and the European Union.

In the US, developers must register with local authorities either as money transmitters or money service businesses. This means meeting federal standards, such as having an Anti-Money Laundering plan in place.

For European developers, registration as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) is required, in line with EU rules covering digital finance. These steps are aimed at platforms that hold and manage digital assets on behalf of users.

The update raised concerns among developers and users who feared the rules might apply to all crypto wallets. In response, Google stated in a post on X:

Non-custodial wallets are not in scope of Google Play’s Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Software Wallets Policy. We are updating the Help Center to make this clear.

The company added that further clarifications would be made in its support materials to help distinguish between different wallet types.

Recently, Google introduced a new version of its Google Finance tool. What does the update include? Read the full story.

200,000 Potential Victims Identified As Malware Disguised As Legitimate Apps Crack Bank Accounts, Warns CIFAS https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200000-potential-victims-identified-as-malware-disguised-as-legitimate-apps-crack-bank-accounts-warns-cifas/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200000-potential-victims-identified-as-malware-disguised-as-legitimate-apps-crack-bank-accounts-warns-cifas/#respond Sun, 03 Aug 2025 10:44:50 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200000-potential-victims-identified-as-malware-disguised-as-legitimate-apps-crack-bank-accounts-warns-cifas/

A prominent fraud prevention service says international crime groups are spreading malware designed to steal victims’ banking information.

The London-based Credit Industry Fraud Avoidance System (CIFAS) says it is witnessing a surge in Android malware attacks targeting banking apps.

CIFAS says that while the malware targets Android users, other mobile platforms are not immune to attacks, noting that the malicious software may have hit 200,000 victims in just six months.

“These malicious apps often look like legitimate tools – such as file managers, PDF readers, phone cleaners, or even browsers like Google Chrome. Once installed, they can appear harmless but later activate harmful features through hidden updates.

Key techniques criminals use include:

Overlaying fake login screens on top of real banking apps to steal login credentials.

Displaying deceptive ‘busy’ or ‘waiting’ screens to mask fraudulent activity.

Preventing users from exiting the app or restarting their device.

Requesting excessive permissions, especially ‘accessibility’ access.”

According to CIFAS, users should be on the lookout for signs that their phones are infected with malware, including prompts to reauthenticate during a banking session, “busy” messages from banking apps, unexpected notifications to update or install Google Chrome and prompts to grant unusual permissions, particularly accessibility access.

Says CIFAS CEO Mike Haley,

“The surge in Android malware is not just a tech issue – it’s a growing threat to consumers and to banking services we all rely on. Criminals are evolving their tactics faster than ever, using deception and stealth to bypass traditional security measures.

The best defence is awareness. If something feels off – an unexpected update, a strange app request – stop before you tap and always seek a second opinion. Education and vigilance are our frontline tools in the fight against fraud.”

youtube music vs spotify 4

Andy Walker / Android Authority

Google is a software company and knows how to make great apps. I mean, I use apps like Gmail, Maps, YouTube, and Drive on a regular basis. Then there are its AI-focused apps like NotebookLM, which is by far the most underrated app in Google’s arsenal.

However, there are a few apps I think are way underdeveloped and need some serious work. They’re simply too basic for me, or lack many of the features you get with the competition. I know Google is all about simplicity at times, but it’s taking things too far with some of its apps.

I want to discuss four of them and explain why I think they desperately need an upgrade. Let’s dive in.

Which of these apps is your least favorite?

65 votes

Google Keep

google keep text formatting 1

Joe Maring / Android Authority

As far as note-taking apps go, Google Keep is as basic as they get. Even fundamental things like text formatting are very basic, with Keep only offering a few options. While the app itself launched over a decade ago, these basic formatting features were only widely rolled out to the Android app in 2023, with the desktop version catching up two months ago.

You have two heading options on offer, as well as the ability to bold, italicize, and underline text. That’s it. You can’t change colors, adjust the font size outside of the available headings, or create a bulleted list.

While you can upload images to a note, you can’t place them in a specific area, as they automatically show up on top. You can create labels to try and organize your notes, but you can’t create notebooks like with most of Google Keep’s competitors.

I get that Google is trying to keep this as a simple note-taking app, since a lot of people are into that. Not everyone wants an app that’s as feature-packed as Evernote or Notion. However, there’s a limit, and I think adding things like improved formatting options and a better system for organizing notes would still retain that simple nature Google is going for and significantly improve the app’s overall usability. I was a Keep user for years but ultimately decided to move to a rival app for these very reasons.

Google Tasks

google tasks feature 1

Andy Walker / Android Authority

I tried this for a while and really wanted to love it, especially since it’s well-integrated with Gemini, but I just can’t stand it. If you think Keep is basic, take a look at Tasks. It’s as barebones as it gets.

I’ve been using Todoist for years, and it still feels like a very simple app to use. However, it’s packed with features that improve the overall experience and don’t get in my way if I don’t want to use them.

I love that I can write out “Do laundry every Wednesday at 6 PM” and the app will create a recurring task right away. Since it supports natural language input, I don’t have to manually select a date or time; I just type it out. That’s simple and efficient.

With Google Tasks, you get none of that.

I also love that I can give a priority level to each task, use filters and labels for improved organization, create sub-projects, and see what’s on my to-do list just today for improved focus, among many other features.

With Google Tasks, you get none of that. The only features I can highlight are the ability to create lists and add a star to a task so you can find it faster. All very basic stuff, really. With the amount of money, knowledge, and manpower Google has, it should be able to make a proper to-do list app instead of giving us this barebones offering, which I don’t think many people use.

YouTube Music

The YouTube Music explore tab on an Android device that is leaning on a stack of black books.

Nathan Drescher / Android Authority

This is by far the most developed app on this list. It’s a good one overall, I’ll give it that, but it still needs work since it’s facing tough competition from Spotify and the likes.

I want to minimize the number of apps I use, so I’d ideally like YouTube Music to be my main app for podcasts, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon. The podcast feature on YouTube Music feels like an afterthought instead of being well-integrated into the overall experience. It’s very hard to find podcasts to listen to, as its discovery feature is not great compared to rival apps. If you know what you want to listen to, you can search for it, and that’s that. But if you want to explore new podcasts in specific genres or see what other people are into, then YouTube Music is not that great.

Then there are the limitations of the free plan. The music stops playing as soon as I turn off the screen, which isn’t a big deal when I’m at home, as I tend to watch videos and check out lyrics while listening to my favorite jams. But when I’m in my car, turning off the display is a must as I want to preserve battery life. I can’t do that with YouTube Music, but I think I should be able to, especially since Google gets plenty of cash from the two ads I have to listen to every fourth or fifth song.

Spotify’s free plan, for instance, allows for background playback when the screen is off, and what’s even more interesting is that the number of ads I have to listen to is significantly lower compared to YouTube Music. Sure, Spotify has other limitations YouTube Music doesn’t, but I can live with those while listening to music in my car.

Google Wallpapers

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Pixel 8 Pro

I recently broke my phone and had to switch to an old OnePlus for the time being. I turned it on and found a Google Wallpaper app installed that I forgot existed. A wallpaper app from the maker of the Pixel and all those fancy apps I use at all times sounds exciting, but that excitement went away a few minutes after opening it.

The app is super basic and has a very small selection of wallpapers, especially compared to a rival app like Zedge. The wallpapers are separated into only ten categories, which seems incredibly low considering how many categories similar apps offer.

The selection of wallpapers is limited.

Not only is the selection limited, the wallpapers themselves aren’t really that good. Most are very generic in my opinion, although I did manage to find a few good ones. What I find interesting is that Google hasn’t even bothered connecting the app with Gemini, which would allow users to create custom wallpapers based on prompts. Google has a competitive advantage here that it’s simply not utilizing. The app itself is just so basic that I don’t know why Google made it in the first place.

These are the four apps Google needs to work on, but let me know in the comments if there are any others you think are sub-par.

Some of these bring back memories of apps like Google Podcasts, which were so basic for reasons unknown to me that Google decided to kill them

Which of these apps is your least favorite?

. I don’t think that’s going to happen with apps like Keep and YouTube Music, but I don’t think a lot of people would miss an app like Wallpapers. At least, I wouldn’t.

VanEck CEO Predicts Rise of ‘Super Apps’ Like Robinhood, Kraken and X Will Put Pressure on TradFi’s Payments System https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vaneck-ceo-predicts-rise-of-super-apps-like-robinhood-kraken-and-x-will-put-pressure-on-tradfis-payments-system/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vaneck-ceo-predicts-rise-of-super-apps-like-robinhood-kraken-and-x-will-put-pressure-on-tradfis-payments-system/#respond Mon, 21 Jul 2025 00:13:56 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vaneck-ceo-predicts-rise-of-super-apps-like-robinhood-kraken-and-x-will-put-pressure-on-tradfis-payments-system/

The chief executive of exchange-traded fund (ETF) provider VanEck is predicting that “super apps” will challenge traditional finance’s payments system.

In a new interview with CNBC Television, VanEck CEO Jan Van Eck says that apps that offer support for stablecoins will soon begin to put pressure on traditional methods of payments.

According to Van Eck, since stablecoins skip out on intermediaries such as Visa and Mastercard that charge about 3% in fees for payments, the super apps could serve as viable alternatives.

“I definitely think that this will put cost pressure on the payments system because it is cheaper and allows all these competitors to come into the market, whether it’s a Kraken, whether it’s a Robinhood, whether it’s an X, there are going to be a lot of super apps.”

On Friday, President Trump signed into law the GENIUS Act, which establishes a stringent regulatory framework for firms issuing payment stablecoins.

Van Eck goes on to note that while the stablecoin issuer Circle has done well so far this year, new competition is gearing up to enter the space.

“It’ll be several quarters before it’ll impact earnings, either to the positive or the negative. But stocks are kind of moving in anticipation of that right now.

And you see the incumbents – Ethereum has had a great month; Circle, the one public stablecoin company, has had a great run since its IPO (initial public offering). The market is getting ahead of it, but those are just the incumbents; there are going to be a lot of competitors entering into this space.”

I can’t be alone in wishing I’d kept a journal over the years. I’d love to reflect on what I was up to on certain days 20 years ago and how I was processing it all. Other than a few batches of photos and my increasingly fading memory, the records of my various travel adventures have mostly been lost. And those were the exciting times — the humdrum days in between have been almost entirely condemned to the mists of time.

I don’t beat myself up about not keeping a journal because I know I wouldn’t have stuck with it. Having to sit down and write or type for 15 minutes in the evening would have fallen by the wayside pretty quickly. But recent advances in AI have made me rethink this. Now, belatedly, I’m journaling every day. It takes around two minutes before bed each night to do it via Samsung Voice Recorder, and I even realized I can use it to avoid the premium plan on one of the best journaling apps.

A tale of two apps: Voice Recorder and Day One

Samsung Voice Recorder and Day One Apps

Matt Horne / Android Authority

After upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus last year, I started playing around with the new Galaxy AI features. The AI transcription in Samsung Voice Recorder inspired me to use it for journaling. I’m aware that some Android phones have had live transcription features for a while, but I was particularly impressed with how quickly and easily Voice Recorder can both transcribe the voice notes after the fact and use AI to tidy them up.

This got me 90% of the way towards the plan of a quick brain dump each evening, but I was also wary of leaving the transcribed notes scattered about in an unordered fashion. You can arrange them in categories in both Voice Recorder and Samsung Notes, but what I really wanted was an organized journal setup in which I just dictate an entry, and it labels and stores it in an easy-to-reference way later. The simplest option was to use a journaling app with AI transcription baked in.

That left me with two imperfect solutions I could combine to meet my needs.

The Day One app fit the bill almost perfectly. It’s a polished journaling app popular on both iOS and Android that lets you log text, photos, and audio entries, plus it can sync across devices. The only snag was that, while the app has a free tier to record entries, you have to pay for the premium plan if you want to use the transcription feature. That left me with two imperfect solutions I could combine to meet my needs.

Now, each evening, I do the following.

  1. Open Voice Recorder and hit Record, then talk about my day for a minute or two.
  2. Stop the recording and save it, then tap on it and press Transcribe. A recording of that length takes around ten seconds to process.
  3. Tap and hold the text and select Copy all.
  4. Three taps to exit Voice Recorder, open the Day One app, and press New entry.
  5. Paste the text, and I’m done.

The whole process takes two to three minutes. Admittedly, the Galaxy AI transcriptions aren’t always perfect as I’m usually tiredly rambling into the phone. This isn’t an issue for me as I’m not planning to publish my memoirs. I just want enough to jog my memory, and it’s more than adequate for that purpose.

Am I in the wrong for not paying?

Google Play Store app next to other Google Apps stock photo

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

For the record, I’m not against paying for premium plans on apps if they’re offering a genuine benefit — Duolingo is one example of an app that has certainly done well out of me financially. Day One is a great app, and I’d urge anyone who can benefit from the premium tier to sign up if it fits your budget.

In my case, I’m just minimally using the app while getting the one premium tier feature I need for free on my device. Almost all of the many premium perks would go unused if I signed up. At over $40 per year, I find that expense hard to justify. But I’ll let you judge my actions in the poll below.

Would you use a free workaround rather than pay for a premium app feature?

31 votes

This setup might not work for everyone, but it’s been a game-changer for me. I’ve finally found a low-effort way to keep track of my days, and it’s made me weirdly excited to look back at them someday. If AI is going to take over our lives anyway, it might as well help us remember the good old days when it was just a novelty.

Google Play Store search on Nothing Phone 2

Damien Wilde / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Earlier this year, Google started working to implement minimalistic app listings for system services in the Play Store.
  • These listings do not include a review section nor allow users to rate the apps.
  • Users are now starting to see this new format for system services roll out widely.

Should all app listings be created the same? At first glance, it might make sense to expect all app listings in the Play Store to have the same stuff: description, screenshots, device compatibility, and a place to submit and read reviews. Back at the start of the year, though, we started to become aware of a change Google was working on that would seriously pare down the content available in Play Store listings for some apps, resulting in a minimalistic app listing just containing a basic synopsis. And now it finally looks like this new view is starting to roll out widely.

Not all apps are built equally, and the ones we first saw associated with this minimal new Play Store layout were all Android system services — the sort of things the vast majority of users will never have to think twice about, let alone try to pull them up on the Play Store. At the time, we speculated that Google’s reasoning for this change might involve wanting to limit the ability of users to take out their frustrations with undesirable system behavior by review-bombing these apps.

As if heralded by that release, we’ve started to receive reports from users who are now seeing the new listing format live on their devices.

Odds are, you won’t stumble across any of these naturally — these aren’t the kind of apps most people go looking for in the first place, and they won’t even show up in a regular search. But if you’re browsing installed apps on your phone and tap through out of curiosity — well, now you’ve got no excuse for being surprised.

MapleStory Universe to Launch Web and Mobile Apps by 2026 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maplestory-universe-to-launch-web-and-mobile-apps-by-2026/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maplestory-universe-to-launch-web-and-mobile-apps-by-2026/#respond Thu, 03 Jul 2025 17:40:47 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maplestory-universe-to-launch-web-and-mobile-apps-by-2026/

Nexpace, the web3 division of Nexon, is planning to launch more than a dozen applications linked to the MapleStory Universe ecosystem by early 2026. These upcoming tools are designed to give players access to parts of the game—such as character growth, item management, and questing—without needing to open the full PC client.

The new apps will be available via web browsers and mobile devices, allowing users to carry out tasks from outside the main game. The goal is to make the platform more accessible to players who have limited time or cannot always use a desktop setup.

Due later this year, the first application will support item enhancement directly from a browser.

Key Insights

  • Over a dozen apps connected to MapleStory Universe are planned for release by early 2026
  • First app launching by late July or August, focused on item enhancement via web browser
  • These apps will allow players to progress characters, manage items, and complete tasks
  • A developer hub will also be available by late 2025 to support third-party app contributions
  • $NXPC token rewards will be distributed to contributors, with 80% of the supply allocated

What updates are coming to MapleStory Universe ?

Following the launch of MapleStory N in May 2025, Nexpace has begun expanding the game’s structure beyond the PC client. The game itself integrates blockchain elements, including NFT-based items and a native token ($NXPC), and operates on a custom Layer 1 network built on Avalanche.

Whilst the core gameplay remains on desktop, Nexpace has confirmed that it is building a series of companion applications that will connect directly to player accounts. These apps are intended to simplify how players engage with the game and will include tools for quests, trading, progression, and even gameplay delegation—where one player can pay another to complete routine tasks.

Nexpace said that the expansion is partly driven by the habits of long-time fans who now have less time for extended gaming sessions. According to the company, these apps will let players stay involved in the game world in shorter intervals, without needing to download large clients or be tied to a desktop.

Source: MapleStory Universe

When can we expect these apps?

The first of these new applications is expected to go live between late July and early August, beginning with item enhancement features accessible through a web browser.

Nexpace has stated that more than 12 such applications are in various stages of development. In addition to in-house tools, the company is encouraging external developers to build their own apps through its public API system. The company plans to distribute 80% of the $NXPC token supply to developers, artists, and other contributors to the ecosystem.

Currently, official integration requires approval via a Nexpace-issued API key, but a permissionless developer hub is expected by the end of 2025.

June 9th, 2025 – Sydney, Australia

With the support of Galaxy Ventures and previous investment from notable industry leaders like Vitalik Buterin, RISE sets out to solve the blockchain adoption challenge with its exponentially faster blockchain technology; offering real-time performance of as low as 5ms latency and a 100k TPS target, while maintaining a decentralization-first roadmap.

RISE, a real-time blockchain scaling Ethereum with record throughput and ultra-low latency, announced a $4 million investment from Galaxy Ventures, bringing total funds raised to date to $8 million. This latest funding round will enable RISE to continue to push the boundaries of blockchain performance and develop the next generation of blockchain applications.

Offering instant transaction speeds is a key pillar of bringing more assets, enterprises, and users onchain, but building a blockchain that provides this has been difficult to date. RISE, a new blockchain built on top of Ethereum, solves this with its breakthrough transaction architecture, powered by Shreds which enable record-breaking latency as low as 5-milliseconds. This is especially significant for advanced DeFi use cases such as orderbook strategies, options, high-frequency trading, and market making. RISE launched its public testnet earlier this month, which has already undergone significant battle testing, reaching over 2 billion transactions, including over 50,000 transactions processed in a single 1-second block. This enables developers to experiment and build onchain apps that operate with a new standard of performance, introduced as “Infinite Speed”: real-time performance, decentralized.

By rethinking blockchain design from first principles, RISE addresses a fundamental tradeoff where low latency and high throughput previously required compromising decentralization. Competing blockchains often rely on centralized approaches, introducing censorship risk and single points of failure. RISE was built from day one to deliver unstoppable performance without sacrificing decentralization, enabling real-time transactions on widely accessible, standard hardware. RISE will also implement performance-compatible based sequencing to leverage Ethereum’s vast network of validators and unlock synchronous composability between Ethereum and RISE.

Key Differentiators of RISE:

  • Shreds: Sub-blocktime transaction confirmations enabling as low as 5ms round-trip latency
  • Scalable Throughput: Currently benchmarked at over 50,000 TPS, with plans to exceed 100,000 TPS
  • Based Sequencing (Coming Soon): Unlocking a true extension of Ethereum and solving liquidity fragmentation for users
  • Secured Shreds (Coming Soon): Preconfirmations economically secured by Ethereum Validators, significantly improving the security profile

“Performance is only meaningful if it lasts,” said Sam Battenally, co-founder and CEO of RISE. “RISE was built to stay fast—forever. This investment from Galaxy Ventures underscores the need for infrastructure that doesn’t just scale technically, but scales trustlessly. We’re excited to accelerate toward mainnet and bring the next generation of crypto apps into reality.”

RISE will use the funding to support product and app development in the lead-up to mainnet launch. Builders can explore the testnet now at portal.risechain.com.

“RISE is the first project we’ve seen that addresses the scalability trilemma without material security tradeoffs,” said Neil Bhuta, Investor at Galaxy Ventures. “It brings a level of speed, scalability, and decentralization that is essential to supporting a new generation of high-performance applications. We’re proud to back a talented team that is pushing the boundaries of blockchain technology.”

About RISE

Opera’s Neon Browser Can Build Apps and Automate Tasks in the Cloud https://earlybirdsinvest.com/operas-neon-browser-can-build-apps-and-automate-tasks-in-the-cloud/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/operas-neon-browser-can-build-apps-and-automate-tasks-in-the-cloud/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 22:01:52 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/operas-neon-browser-can-build-apps-and-automate-tasks-in-the-cloud/

Opera has introduced a new browser called Neon, designed to work with artificial intelligence (AI) in a more hands-on way.

Neon is built around three main features, Chat, Do, and Make, that aim to change how users interact with the internet.

The Do feature focuses on task automation. While similar tools already exist, Opera said Neon takes a more advanced approach by building “interaction maps” of websites.

Unlike traditional tools that rely on fixed page layouts, these maps track how users move through a site, including clicks, scrolls, and form inputs. This allows the browser to repeat actions on behalf of the user and complete multi-step tasks more efficiently.

The second feature, “Make”, is built to turn user prompts into working digital products.

Opera Neon’s official website states, “Make takes complex ideas from prompting to full-scale results—content, games, and web apps”. These applications are created on remote servers, which allows users to return later and find their projects ready for use.

The third feature, “Chat”, is designed to improve how users search and interact online. Instead of typing keywords, users can write or speak in everyday language.

Neon also allows for language switching mid-conversation while maintaining context. For example, a user searching for restaurants can start in English, switch to Japanese, and still receive relevant results with the appropriate cultural context.

Each feature is supported by a cloud-based system that enables the browser to perform tasks even after it has been closed.
