google password manager app shortcut on a smartphone home screen

Megan Ellis / Android Authority

I’ve been on a mission to de-Google my life as much as possible in an attempt to control how much information a single company has about me. While there are some essential Google services I will never part with, switching my browser from Chrome has been a priority.

Which password manager do you use to save your Android passwords?

I prefer Brave, but I was tethered to Chrome

Megan Ellis / Android Authority

I have never regretted the switch to Brave. However, Chrome remained in my app rotation for one simple reason: I have hundreds of passwords saved in the Password Manager. While it’s possible to export passwords to another browser, Password Manager is also built into Android. This integration allows you to save passwords, generate secure password suggestions, and access login details across devices.

I’m glad I switched to Brave, but password management on Android kept me tethered to Chrome.

This also means that Password Manager has been essential for my Android phones. When an OEM doesn’t have its own version of a credential manager, Google’s Password Manager remains the default way to save and access app passwords. Even when an alternative manager was available, I used Google’s solution wherever possible to make my details easily accessible across phones from different manufacturers.

I could technically access the passwords by searching through my phone’s settings and finding my Google account preferences, but the process was different for each device and resulted in me visiting a variety of different menus before finding the right one. This is why I kept Chrome around. If I wanted to access my app passwords easily, I needed to open Chrome and access them there. But the standalone Password Manager app has changed that.

Google Password Manager app makes accessing Android passwords easier

google password manager play store listing

Megan Ellis / Android Authority

Google Password Manager now exists as a standalone app that you can download from the Google Play Store. Not only does this make it easier to access the service on your home screen and through your app drawer, but it also makes accessing the service easier overall.

I was initially concerned that the app only functioned as a shortcut to the password manager within Chrome. I’ve since disabled Chrome on my smartphone to see whether this was the case. I was happy to discover that I can still access the password manager without needing Chrome. I was also able to sign up for a new app, generate a password through the Password Manager pop-up, and save the password to the service.

Google’s Password Manager app works even if you have Chrome disabled on your smartphone.

Likewise, I can still access the most important features of the service, including account credentials, the checkup tool, and autofill settings.

The only other reason I kept Chrome around was to easily access Google Search when I needed shopping links or better local results. I love Brave Search, but it doesn’t provide as many local results and local shop listings as I would like. However, I don’t need Chrome to access Google — I can just add a shortcut to the search engine in Brave.

With the introduction of the standalone Password Manager app, my last reason to keep Chrome around no longer applies. The anxiety I felt when considering completely leaving Chrome behind is gone.

However, there are drawbacks. Even though Google Password Manager is now a standalone app, this doesn’t mean it acts like other credential management apps. When I use Brave, the passwords I enter save to Brave’s built-in password manager, even when I’m using my phone. Google’s autofill feature also only works when I’m using an Android app that requires a login, or when I’m using Chrome.

So, when I want to log in to a site using Brave, I need to open Google’s app to copy over the credentials and paste them separately to the browser. Overall, though, I’m glad I no longer need to keep Chrome installed to do this.

I may eventually move to a different password manager

Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority

While Google Password Manager is the most convenient password manager to use across devices, it isn’t necessarily the most secure. There are plenty of great password managers to choose from, many of which offer free plans. Since I’ve also switched from Chrome as my default browser on my computer, I need a manager I can use across devices and browsers. A dedicated password manager app will also allow me to use the autofill feature regardless of which browser I’m using.

But to be honest, I find comfort in familiarity, so it will take time for me to truly make the jump. I’m eager to try out Proton Pass due to the company’s focus on privacy. The password manager also offers benefits like email aliases and an integrated two-factor authentication (2FA) feature. It will also let me import my passwords from multiple browsers and generate strong passwords for accounts.

However, before I make the switch to an alternative, I will need time to test it and see that it suits my needs. At the same time, I’m glad that Google’s new standalone app makes it possible for me to easily store Android credentials without needing to use Chrome to access them anymore.

I no longer feel stuck and bound to Chrome, which in turn has made it easier to envision more ways I can reduce my reliance on Google. I want to use a service because it offers the best features, not because I’m simply locked into the ecosystem.

The move-to-earn (M2E) NFT mobile game, STEPN, has unveiled a limited collection of phygital sneakers as part of its ongoing GG Box Event.

According to an update from the project, these sneaker NFTs are up for grabs to users who participate in the event by buying and opening GG Mystery Boxes.

The GG Box Event was launched by the Find Satoshi Lab (FSL) ecosystem. FSL, the blockchain behind STEPN, was created by the teams behind the M2E app, the Telegram-based FSL Game Hub, and STEPN’s NFT marketplace MOOAR. The event provides teams with a way to connect deeply with their users and audience.

Inside a GG Box, users will find annual percentage yield (APY) boost coupons of up to 15% for FSL’s new yield-generating stablecoin, Good Game US Dollar (GGUSD). There are also GGUSD cash prizes, keys for future boxes, and mystery rewards. As of August 27, users had claimed over $10,000 in GGUSD rewards, according to FSL Ecosystem.

Some of the most exciting contents of the GG Mystery Box are the GGUSD sneakers, which are either Common or Genesis STEPN sneakers.

STEPN, on its part, is not new to the NFT sphere. In April 2024, the project launched the Genesis Sneakers collection in collaboration with the fashion giant Adidas. The limited edition collection was among the co-branded collectibles released during the one-year partnership between the firms. The collection features 1,000 phygital collectibles, each sold for 10,000 Green Metaverse Tokens (GMT). GMT is STEPN’s governance and higher-level token.

For the GG Box Event, STEPN has released 80,000 mystery boxes, each costing 1 GGUSD. Participants can also trade the boxes on MOOAR. To participate in the event and potentially win a rare GGUSD sneaker, STEPN users can purchase box keys for 1 GGUSD in the provided website.

Interestingly, FSL has promised extra GG Boxes for participants in an attempt to encourage others to participate. The platform said it will drop an additional GG Box for every GG Box a user has opened since launch. The snapshot for the giveaway is set for August 28, 00:00–12:00 UTC.

Meanwhile, the GG Mystery Boxes are also available on STEPN GO. This is a game that allows users to burn their shoes to earn points, which can be considered a form of energy. They also enable users to share their sneaker NFTs with friends and split the earnings with the Go Game Token (GGT). What other exciting events and packages could STEPN offer to its users? Stay tuned to find out.

Adobe first launched Photoshop exclusively for the Macintosh in 1990. Since then, the software has grown to become the default photo editor for creative professionals on all platforms. Today, the app is available on all major operating systems and continues to keep up with the latest industry trends—including the current AI boom.

While many rivals have put out alternative photo editing apps, very few brands have managed to gain a fraction of Adobe’s relevance in this space. Nevertheless, Photoshop is expensive, and whether it’s worth the recurring fees will depend on your personal budget and needs.

Adobe Photoshop is available on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Android, and the web. While all clients serve the same main purpose, the actual feature set differs based on the platform you’re using. For example, some of the desktop tools are currently unavailable on mobile and on the web. As such, this review focuses on the Mac version of Photoshop.

Getting started with Photoshop

Unlike Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop is not available on the Mac App Store. To install the macOS client, you’ll first need to download the Creative Cloud app launcher from the web, which then automatically installs over half a dozen other Adobe apps for maintenance and such. It’ll flood your Launcher (or App Library on macOS Tahoe) with unnecessary icons and overload your Mac with background processes that could drain the battery and impact its performance. It’s a nightmare. The alternative is using the web version of Photoshop, but it’s missing some features.

Despite the bloatware, Photoshop performed fluidly on my M2 MacBook Air running the macOS Tahoe developer beta. Compared to the web app, the native Mac client’s UI looks a bit outdated, but it works. You get to tweak the theme and other preferences, but a modern redesign is objectively overdue.

If you’re new to Photoshop, you’ll likely appreciate the tips and video guides bundled with the app. Thanks to these explainers, you can find out exactly what each primary tool does and quickly get to know how the complex software operates.

Foundry

Before looking into the traditional Photoshop features, let’s explore the newest features that are powered by artificial intelligence. Adobe Firefly is the company’s AI engine, and it’s baked natively into Photoshop. While using AI in photo editing can be a controversial topic, certain smart tools help creatives achieve more in less time—without necessarily stripping the original photo of its artistic essence.

For example, noise reduction tools and blemish erasers have been around for eons. The AI-powered Photoshop app merely upgrades these existing features to enhance the output. So, you get to circle intrusive objects and have AI generate a suitable background that blends with the rest of the image. You similarly get to upscale or expand photos while minimizing pixelation. It’s the subtle kind of AI that maintains the input’s realism.

Otherwise, you get some wilder AI features in Photoshop for those who want to completely transform their content. For example, you can generate images from scratch using text prompts and insert them realistically (shadows and all) into your project. You also get to try different variants of the same object to see what visually works best in a particular context.

Likewise, you can isolate the subject in your shot and have AI generate new backgrounds or sky styles, making it easier for marketers to take product shots. Similar to Lightroom, you can also apply AI-made filters that uniquely adapt to your individual photos.

Foundry

Like most AI features, the output can sometimes be unpredictable. However, the features have generally worked reliably for me, and they are undoubtedly more accurate than asking ChatGPT to edit a photo in a specific way. It’s worth noting, though, that certain generative features consume Adobe Firefly credits. If you run out of AI tokens, you can buy additional ones via a separate Firefly subscription, which starts at $9.99/£9.98 a month.

Photoshop classic features

Foundry

Even before the AI boom, Adobe Photoshop topped the photo editing charts due to its advanced capabilities. For starters, the software utilizes a longstanding layering system, making it easy to isolate edits and apply changes without affecting the original image. If you’re unsure about a certain change or effect, you can easily deactivate, reorder, or delete the respective layer without impacting the rest of your project.

Other non-AI features include different brush styles for doodling, cloning tool, a ton of fonts for inserted text, cropping, blending, color balance adjustments, smudging, masking, healing, distorting, warping, edit changelog, numerous export options, etc. And with support for third-party plugins, you can supercharge the software further with more specific tools that Adobe doesn’t natively offer. There’s a reason why the word Photoshop has become the go-to verb for any altered image—it’s incredibly powerful and basically limitless in its abilities.

Foundry

In terms of performance, I didn’t encounter any major bugs or lags while using Photoshop on my MacBook. If it feels sluggish, you can head to the app’s settings and tweak some relevant options to make the experience smoother. For example, you can pick between on-device and cloud processing for certain AI features. Similarly, you can accelerate some tools by prioritizing speed over accurate results and dictate how much RAM the software can put to use.

Photoshop pricing and availability

To access Photoshop on macOS (or any other platform), you’ll need to pay for a subscription after your 7-day free trial expires. Adobe offers three main tiers:

Photoshop: The vanilla tier offers Photoshop access on all platforms, in addition to 100GB of cloud storage, for $34.49/£32.98 a month and cancel at any time. If you have long-term photo editing needs, you can opt for the $275.88 annual plan with monthly $22.99/£21.98 billing. Canceling the latter plan early will incur additional fees, however. To maximize your savings, you can pay $263.88/£262.51 upfront for one year of access.

At the time of writing Adobe has 50% off for the first three months in the UK, meaning you can get it for £9.98 a month for three months, before paying the full price for the rest of the term.

Photography bundle: This discounted tier unlocks Photoshop, Lightroom, and 1TB of cloud storage for $29.99/£28.99 a month (cancel at any time). Similar to the vanilla tier, you can choose an annual plan to save some bucks and get it for $19.99/£19.97 a month. Whether you’re opting for monthly billing or paying it all in one go, this bundle will cost you $239.88/£238.42 a year.

Creative Cloud Pro bundle: If you rely on other Adobe software, you can pay $104.99/£99.89 a month for the all-encompassing Creative Cloud Pro bundle (cancel at any time). This unlocks Photoshop, Lightroom, Acrobat, Illustrator, and over a dozen other apps. The annual plan is a monthly $69.99/£66.49 payment, while an upfront payment would discount it to $779.88/£773.86 for the year.

Adobe U.S. has 40% off for the first year bringing the price down to $41.99 a month paid monthly on the annual plan.

Adobe U.K. has 50% off for three months bringing the price down to £32.66 a month for three months.

Eligible students can apply additional discounts when subscribing to the Creative Cloud Pro bundle.

The price structure doesn’t make a lot of sense, and the Photography bundle is the best value even if you just want Photoshop. You’re still be getting around 10x more cloud storage for a significantly lower fee compared to the vanilla Photoshop tier.

For more information on Adobe pricing and the latest deals read Adobe Creative Cloud pricing: How to get the best deal.

Should you subscribe to Adobe Photoshop?

Whether you’re polishing a portrait, designing a poster, preparing marketing materials, or creating a digital banner, Photoshop will be able to handle your needs. And due to its popularity, you can find hundreds of solid tutorials on YouTube and other sites if you’re new to the platform. The app caters to both basic edits and advanced workflows, so no matter what your experience level is, you can find ways to utilize Photoshop effectively.

The only reason you may want to avoid using Photoshop is its revenue model. It’s not cheap, and for many reasons, some users avoid services with recurring subscription fees. Fortunately, there are plenty of Photoshop alternatives that are completely free, such as Photopea, or charge a one-time fee, including Apple-owned Pixelmator. While their feature sets—especially the AI-centric ones—aren’t identical to that of Photoshop, they can still produce similar results.

However, if your job revolves around manipulating images or you’re a prospective artist, then Adobe Photoshop is absolutely worth the price tag. Ultimately, Adobe Photoshop remains the best photo editor for professionals out there. It’s stable, reliable, feature-rich, and actively developed; it won’t disappoint.

Google Translate app tipped to add ‘Practice’ for learning new languages https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-translate-app-tipped-to-add-practice-for-learning-new-languages/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-translate-app-tipped-to-add-practice-for-learning-new-languages/#respond Thu, 14 Aug 2025 15:10:35 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-translate-app-tipped-to-add-practice-for-learning-new-languages/

What you need to know

  • A user on Telegram posted a snapshot of a feature in testing for the Google Translate app known as “Practice.”
  • Another tipster chimed in, diving into the app’s APK, discovering that users could find guided listening and speaking practices/quizzes for new languages.
  • There’s no telling when this could arrive; however, the feature seems mostly put together, meaning we could be approaching its arrival.

There’s a new feature rumored for the Google Translate app that might take on some popular language learning apps (looking at you, Duolingo).

An APK teardown conducted by Android Authority after an alleged discovery by Telegram user Mehrad suggests Google Translate might get a new “Practice” button. According to the Telegram post, the company is seemingly working on a way for users to practice new languages, similar to Duolingo. Mehrad was able to screenshot a “Practice Spanish” menu, which displays the user’s goal (how well they want to speak), Daily Activities, and Words Practiced.

Also, it was nearly cut off, but there’s a button that says “create your own practice scenario,” which could come in handy if you’re trying to gauge your abilities in specific situations.

On the other hand, the publication, alongside tipster AssembleDebug, dove into the Translate app’s code to discover a new graduation cap icon representing “Practice.” Google’s tagline reads, “practice with AI-powered conversations.” The app gives several “recommended” scenarios, encompassing both listening and speaking practices. When listening, users are given an audio clip and asked to tap which words they recognize.

A leaked screenshot of Google Translate's supposed "practice" feature to help users learn new languages.

After it’s done, and you’ve seen how well you faired, the Translate app lets users adjust the difficulty of its generated scenarios.

When creating a pretend custom speaking scenario, the tipster highlights the ability for users to write their own situation or choose a recommended one. From there, users are presented with a selection of “tasks” to complete before getting the chance to speak into the app. There’s also a “proficiency” level users can select, which is how well they’re able to speak the language they want to learn. The post states there were options present for “Just Starting, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced.”

The tipster also discovered a quiz function that’s created using “rounds.” From both Mehrad’s screenshot on Telegram and the tipster’s APK deep dive, it seems Google Translate’s language learning feature is nearly completed. There’s no telling when it could arrive officially, but perhaps it’s soon.

Breaking barriers

Earlier in June, we heard rumors about a design shakeup for the Google Translate app that could incorporate more features. The “more translations” header was discovered, giving users more insight into the other ways a word could be translated in other languages. Other additions, like “Regional Variants,” were discovered, as well as “Ask a question.”

Much of this has some of Google’s AI intelligence under the hood, helping users find the answers they’re after.

Elon Musk has said his artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, plans to take Apple to court over how its App Store promotes AI apps.

He claimed that Apple’s system prioritizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which makes it harder for other AI services, including his chatbot Grok and the X app, to be seen.

Musk argued in an August 12 post on X that the App Store’s setup prevents any AI tool other than ChatGPT from reaching the top position. He described this as a violation of competition rules and said his company would take legal action.

At the time of his comments, Grok was listed in sixth place on the “Top Free Apps” chart for iPhone users in the US, while ChatGPT was in first place. Musk pointed out that being high on these lists can greatly affect how many people try an app.

He also questioned why Apple’s “Must Have” section leaves out both Grok and X. In one pinned post, he wrote:

Hey Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the #1 news app in the world. Are you playing politics? What gives?

The Grok account also posted about the situation. It said Apple’s curation favors AI tools like ChatGPT over new ones.

Recently, Musk announced that Tesla has officially ended work on its Dojo AI training computer. What did he say? Read the full story.
