We recently discovered new changes coming to Emoji Kitchen in Gboard. In case you’re unaware of the feature, Emoji Kitchen lets you create distinct-looking stickers by combining two or more emojis together. In the latest Gboard beta (version 15.7.3.787916401 beta), we found references to an upcoming feature that will let you save your sticker creations as “Favorites” for reusing later.

Although the functionality to save stickers as favorites is not available yet, we were able to tinker with the latest release and enable it to demonstrate how it could work when rolled out widely. While we spotted the functionality in June, we couldn’t get it to work back then. That changes with the recent beta update.

With this option enabled, every time we try out a new sticker created from an emoji combination, a pop-up emerges and prompts us to save the result as a favorite. When we wish to use the saved sticker next time, we can tap the heart-shaped icon in the top right corner of the Emoji Kitchen suggestions, which will reveal our favorites.

Since the dedicated Emoji Kitchen browser is limited to Pixel phones, we’re unsure of how Google could integrate it on Android devices from other brands. However, it is less likely that Google limits the feature to its own Pixel devices only.

Lastly, we’d like to reiterate that you can’t save Emoji Kitchen creations as Favorites just yet, but we can expect to roll out soon, considering it looks closer to completion in Gbaord’s latest beta. If you’re currently using Gboard beta, the keyboard app will still show the recent suggestions it made to you, regardless of whether you used them or not.

A few years ago, Google introduced a useful Fast Pair feature that allows users to check the battery status of their true wireless earbuds quickly. If you’re using Fast Pair-enabled earbuds, you may have noticed that every time you open the case, a notification pops up showing the battery levels of each component: the left bud, right bud, and the case. You also receive a notification when the battery on any of these components is running low, prompting you to recharge them in time.

Now, Google is refining the user interface of these battery notifications to make battery status easier to understand at a glance.

Currently, the notification displays an image of both earbuds and their case, with the battery percentages listed at the bottom in a simple, minimal layout. While it works just fine, the design offers limited visual cues. Google is now working on introducing certain handy tweaks and color changes to make these notifications more informative and engaging.

During our teardown of the latest beta version of Google Play Services (version 25.28.31), we discovered that Google is testing a revamped UI for Fast Pair battery notifications. The most noticeable change is the addition of a circular progress bar to represent battery percentage, in addition to the numerical value still listed at the bottom of each component. Battery icons have also been repositioned to the top of the components. These new visual elements make it easier to quickly assess how much charge remains in each earbud and the case.

Additionally, the notification now includes clear labels — L (Left), R (Right), and C (Case) — next to each icon, making it much easier to distinguish which battery level belongs to which component. This is an improvement over the current design, which lacks any labeling.

Moreover, Google is also updating notifications for low battery levels. The circular battery indicators change color based on the charge level: yellow when the battery falls below 50%, and red when it drops under 20%. While this color-coding isn’t entirely new (the current UI also changes the color of the battery icon), the new implementation makes the change more noticeable and tied directly to the visual progress bar.

While this isn’t a major UI overhaul, it makes battery status much easier to interpret. It’s unclear when the new UI will roll out, but it should happen soon. We’ll keep an eye out and let you know when the change goes mainstream.

In today’s APK teardown, we have found yet another change that’s on its way, this time for the way games are displayed on screen.

If you play games on Android Auto, then you’re probably familiar with how they’re presented on your car’s display. When you tap on the app, that game opens up to take over the entire screen. Since all of the screen real estate is occupied, there’s no room for buttons to take you back or exit the game. Instead, you have to swipe down from the top of the display to see these options.

While doing some detective work in Android Auto (version 14.4.152004-release.daily), we spotted that games no longer appear to go full screen. These apps now only take up the majority of the screen, leaving room for the back and app drawer buttons to stay visible. These buttons appear on the right side of the window.

As you may have guessed, the back button acts as a back button for the game. So if you find yourself deep in the game’s menus, you can use this back button to navigate your way back to a previous menu. If you’re not in any menus, tapping on the back button will allow you to exit the game. Meanwhile, the app drawer button, unsurprisingly, opens the app drawer. If you open the app drawer while in a game, your game will continue to run in the background.

This change takes away the need to swipe down from the top of the screen, removing the extra step required to access the buttons you need. You can check out the video below to see these buttons being used in the game Angry Birds.

This wasn’t the only change we found in Android Auto today. We also discovered that Google is making a head-scratching tweak to the media player UI that could relocate your playback controls.

We dug into the One UI 8 firmware and discovered that Samsung is working on a “Listen Brief” button. Check out our screenshots of the code snippets below.

Now Brief offers a summary of your morning, afternoon, or evening. This summary includes weather forecasts, upcoming calendar events, traffic updates, and news. However, the “Listen Brief” feature seems to be an audio version of Now Brief, allowing you to get all these details without reading.

One of the screenshots also hints that Listen Brief users can choose between Samsung and Google’s text-to-speech engines. Furthermore, another screenshot suggests that users can pause, play, or stop the audio briefing.

This could be a useful way to get your daily briefing, and I can see it being handy if you’re driving or otherwise preoccupied. It would also be a great addition for visually impaired people or users with different accessibility needs.

In saying so, there are plenty of other ways Samsung can improve this feature. Colleague Joe Maring felt disappointed by Now Brief after using it for a few weeks, noting that it was a glorified news and weather app. Joe specifically called for additions like sports scores, email integration, and package information. So we hope Listen Brief isn’t the only improvement to Now Brief in One UI 8.

We dug into the latest Google Messages beta (version messages.android_20250218_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic) and discovered that Google is making a variety of minor changes to its search UI. We were also able to activate this new UI. Check out the current interface in the first row of images, and the tweaked UI in the second row.

The first notable change is the move to rejig the search filter page, with the filter buttons being larger and arranged into two rows. Meanwhile, individual search results are now separated from each other thanks to a card-like design. Finally, the link search page now displays results in a bubble-like box with rounded corners compared to the more squared-off box currently seen in the app. It’s also worth noting that the search box, in general, has a different color compared to the current interface.

These aren’t big changes by any measure, but it does help give Google Messages a slightly more modern look, while the overhauled search filter page makes much better use of empty space.
