TL;DR

GameSir is rolling out version 5.0 of its GameHub app, with full Steam support, including cloud saves and online play. That means you can now play your Steam games on your Android devices and keep the progress synced across devices, including your Steam Deck.

The update is also fully optimized for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and GameSir has also upgraded the controller experience. The new build brings immersive vibration, adaptive trigger feedback, and instant hot-swaps. A new native rendering mode also promises more stable frame rates, lower latency, and generally smoother performance.

Early users are already testing GameHub 5.0, and the feedback is mixed. Some players say Steam cloud saves are syncing fine, while others have hit snags when moving between devices like a Steam Deck. One workaround is switching the Steam client out of “lightweight” mode, which seems to fix the issue.

Beyond saves, users are reporting that the update also integrates Steam’s ecosystem features. One user confirmed that achievements and the playtime counter also work with the update.

Meanwhile, multiple players are reporting performance gains. A user who revisited GTA V said, “Just booted up GTA V again and went from 30fps average to 56-60. What black magic is this?”

All told, GameHub 5.0 looks like a significant update, one that’s already convincing those who have been hesitant to try out the streaming app.

Brokewell Android malware delivered through fake TradingView ads

Cybercriminals are abusing Meta’s advertising platforms with fake offers of a free TradingView Premium app that spreads the Brokewell malware for Android.

The campaign targets cryptocurrency assets and has been running since at least July 22nd through an estimated 75 localized ads.

Brokewell has been around since early 2024 and features a broad set of capabilities that include stealing sensitive data, remote monitoring and control of the compromised device.

Taking over the device

Researchers at cybersecurity company Bitdefender investigated the ads in the campaign, which use the TradingView branding and visuals and lure potential victims with the promise of a free premium app for Android.

They note that the campaign was specifically designed for mobile users, as accessing the ad from a different operating system would lead to harmless content.

Clicking from Android, however, redirected to a webpage mimicking the original TradingView site that provided a malicious tw-update.apk file hosted at tradiwiw[.]online/

“The dropped application asks for accessibility, and after receiving it, the screen is covered with a fake update prompt. In the background, the application is giving itself all the permissions it needs,” the researchers say in a report this week..

Furthermore, the malicious app also tries to obtain the PIN for unlocking the device by simulating an Android update request that needs the lockscreen password.

According to Bitdefender, the fake TradingView app is “an advanced version of the Brokewell malware” that comes “with a vast arsenal of tools designed to monitor, control, and steal sensitive information:”

  • Scans for BTC, ETH, USDT, bank account numbers (IBANs)
  • Steals and exports codes from Google Authenticator (2FA bypass)
  • Steals account by overlaying fake login screens
  • Records screens and keystrokes, steals cookies, activates the camera and microphone, and tracks the location
  • Hijacks the default SMS app to intercept messages, including banking and 2FA codes
  • Remote control – can receive commands over Tor or Websockets to send texts, place calls, uninstall apps, or even self-destruct

The researchers provide a technical overview of how the malware works and an extended list of supported commands that includes more than 130 rows.

Bitdefender says that this campaign is part of a larger operation that initially used Facebook ads impersonating “dozens of well-known brands” to target Windows users.

Google to verify all Android devs to block malware on Google Play

Google is introducing a new defense for Android called ‘Developer Verification’ to block malware installations from sideloaded apps sourced from outside the official Google Play app store.

For apps on Google Play, there was already a requirement for publishers to provide a D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System) number, introduced on August 31, 2023.

Google says this has had a notable effect in reducing malware on the platform. However, the system didn’t apply to the vast developer ecosystem outside the app store.

“We’ve seen how malicious actors hide behind anonymity to harm users by impersonating developers and using their brand image to create convincing fake apps,” reads Google’s announcement.

“The scale of this threat is significant: our recent analysis found over 50 times more malware from internet-sideloaded sources than on apps available through Google Play.”

Although the threat is more prevalent outside Google Play, the developer verification requirement applies to both apps on Google Play and apps hosted on third-party app stores.

Starting in 2026, all apps installed on certified Android devices must come from developers who have verified their identity with Google.

Early access to the Developer Verification program will begin this year in October, and the system will open to all Android application developers in March 2026.

In September 2026, the identity verification requirement will become mandatory for Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, before it rolls out globally in 2027.

The expected effect is to have sideloading, non-compliant apps blocked by the operating system with a security message on certified devices.

Certified Android devices are those that have passed Google’s Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) and are approved to ship with Google Play Services, Play Store, and Play Protect.

In practice, this encompasses all mainstream devices from Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and the Google Pixel line.

Non-certified devices are those from Huawei, Amazon Fire tablets, and shady Chinese TV boxes or smartphones that use heavily modified OS images and questionable components.

Those devices are not subject to the new rule enforcement, and their users will be able to continue sideloading APKs from unverified and anonymous developers.

ERMAC Android malware source code leak exposes banking trojan infrastructure

The source code for version 3 of the ERMAC Android banking trojan has been leaked online, exposing the internals of the malware-as-a-service platform and the operator’s infrastructure.

The code base was discovered in an open directory by Hunt.io researchers while scanning for exposed resources in March 2024.

They located an archive named Ermac 3.0.zip, which contained the malware’s code, including backend, frontend (panel), exfiltration server, deployment configurations, and the trojan’s builder and obfuscator.

The researchers analyzed the code, finding that it significantly expanded the targeting capabilities compared to previous versions, with more than 700 banking, shopping, and cryptocurrency apps.

ERMAC was first documented in September 2021  by ThreatFabric – a provider of online payment fraud solutions and intelligence for the financial services sector, as an evolution of the Cerberus banking trojan operated by a threat actor known as ‘BlackRock.’

ERMAC v2.0 was spotted by ESET in May 2022, rented to cybercriminals for a monthly fee of $5,000, and targeting 467 apps, up from 378 in the previous version.

In January 2023, ThreatFabric observed BlackRock promoting a new Android malware tool named Hook, which appeared to be an evolution of ERMAC.

ERMAC v3.0 capabilities

Hunt.io found and analyzed ERMAC’s PHP command-and-control (C2) backend, React front-end panel, Go-based exfiltration server, Kotlin backdoor, and the builder panel for generating custom trojanized APKs.

According to the researchers, ERMAC v3.0 now targets sensitive user information in more than 700 apps.

Additionally, the latest version expands on previously documented form-injection techniques, uses AES-CBC for encrypted communications, features an overhauled operator panel, and enhances data theft and device control.

Specifically, Hunt.io has documented the following capabilities for the latest ERMAC release:

  • Theft of SMS, contacts, and registered accounts
  • Extraction of Gmail subjects and messages
  • File access via ‘list’ and ‘download’ commands
  • SMS sending and call forwarding for communication abuse
  • Photo capturing via the front camera
  • Full app management (launch, uninstall, clear cache)
  • Displaying fake push notifications for deception
  • Uninstalls remotely (killme) for evasion

Infrastructure exposed

Hunt.io analysts used SQL queries to identify live, exposed infrastructure currently used by the threat actors, identifying C2 endpoints, panels, exfiltration servers, and builder deployments.

Apart from exposing the malware’s source code, the ERMAC operators had several other major opsec failures, including hardcoded JWT tokens, default root credentials, and no registration protections on the admin panel, allowing anyone to access, manipulate, or disrupt ERMAC panels.

Finally, the panel names, headers, package names, and various other operational fingerprints left little doubt about attribution and made discovery and mapping of the infrastructure a lot easier.

The ERMAC V3.0 source code leak weakens the malware operation, first by eroding customer trust in the MaaS in its ability to protect information from law enforcement or allow running campaigns with low detection risk.

Threat detection solutions are also likely to get better at spotting ERMAC. However, if the source code falls into the hands of other threat actors, it is possible to observe in the future modified variants of ERMAC that are more difficult to detect.

Here at Android Authority, we spend a lot of time talking about the best Android phones you can buy at any given time. Want a phone with great cameras? Long battery life? Something at a low price? We know exactly the right phone for you.

But there’s another side to that coin: the Android phones you shouldn’t buy. Which phones are you better off skipping? As someone who’s been reviewing and writing about Android phones for a decade, that’s what I’m here to answer.

While there are endless Android phones from unknown brands on Amazon and other online retailers that you should always avoid, I’m focusing this list on major Android phones that you’re likely already considering. Also, while some of the phones here are ones we’ve previously recommended, they’re not necessarily the best purchase in August 2025.

Got it? Great. Without further ado, here are seven Android phones I don’t recommend buying right now.

Google Pixel 9

My first couple of picks may seem contradictory, as they’re some of the highest-rated phones from last year, but there’s a good reason for their inclusion on this list. It starts with the base model Google Pixel 9.

The main reason not to buy the Pixel 9 is that the Pixel 10 is set to be announced on August 20, and it’s shaping up to be a significant upgrade. The Pixel 10 is expected to feature a new 5x telephoto camera (something the Pixel 9 doesn’t have), Qi2 wireless charging with built-in magnets, a larger battery, and slightly faster wired charging.

Perhaps more important is the Tensor G5 chip that’ll be inside the Pixel 10. It’s widely believed that the G5 will not only be Google’s first 3nm chip, but it will also be the first one manufactured by TSMC. Nothing is confirmed until we get our hands on the phone, but this could result in substantial performance and efficiency upgrades even compared to the Pixel 9’s Tensor G4 chipset.

Given how significant an upgrade we expect the Pixel 10 to be, buying a Pixel 9 less than two weeks before the new model gets here isn’t the best idea. I’d recommend waiting to buy the Pixel 10 if it’s as good as we suspect, and if not, you should be able to get the Pixel 9 at a heavily discounted price once its successor arrives.

My next few phones to avoid are grouped together in one section, as my buying advice is the same for all three of them. I’m talking about the Google Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. In addition to the regular Pixel 10, we also expect Google to announce new Pro phones at its August 20 event — including the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Unlike the Pixel 10, none of the Pixel 10 Pro models are reported to get new camera hardware. However, other upgrades — such as Qi2 magnetic charging, larger batteries, faster wired charging, and the Tensor G5 chip — are all on the table.

It’s worth waiting just a little while longer for the Pixel 10 Pro to get here.

While the reasons to wait are slightly different, the same logic applies as it does to the base Pixel 9. If you’re debating buying a Pixel 9 Pro model, it’s worth waiting just a little while longer for the Pixel 10 Pro to get here. At that point, you can decide if the new phones are worth buying, or if you’d rather get last year’s models at a (likely) discounted price.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge

Google isn’t the only company with Android phones that you should avoid buying right now. Looking at Samsung, I find it pretty hard to recommend anyone purchase the Galaxy S25 Edge.

My colleague Ryan Haines gave the Galaxy S25 Edge a tepid 3 out of 5 in his review, criticizing the Edge’s poor thermals, lack of a telephoto camera, weak battery life, and slow charging. For a phone that costs $1,100, the Galaxy S25 Edge just isn’t enough.

The Galaxy S25 Edge has been a difficult recommendation since its launch in May, but recent Galaxy S26 Edge rumors have further reinforced that point. One rumor claims that the S26 Edge will be 0.3mm thinner than the S25 Edge while simultaneously packing a larger 4,400mAh battery — potentially fixing one of our biggest issues with the current Edge.

Even more noteworthy is an exclusive report that Android Authority published in July, where we found evidence that Samsung will discontinue the Galaxy S26 Plus next year and replace it with the Galaxy S26 Edge. This means we could see the S26 Edge released much earlier in the year than previously expected. It also means that the Galaxy S25 Edge may be outdated in just a few months, so buying it right now isn’t the best idea.

Samsung Galaxy A36 5G

Sticking with Samsung, the company has another ho-hum phone on its hands with the Galaxy A36 5G. The A36 is a $400 handset that, at least on the surface, doesn’t look too bad. With a big AMOLED panel, solid hardware, and good battery life, what’s not to like?

As it turns out, a fair amount. In our Galaxy A36 5G review, my colleague Rushil found numerous issues with the phone — one of the most damning being poor performance. Not only does the Exynos 1380 chipset not perform well in benchmarks, but it’s also sluggish for tasks as simple as scrolling through apps or opening the camera. Paired with a super slow fingerprint sensor, the A36 is a phone that’ll test your patience, and not in a good way.

The good news is that there are far better smartphones available at a similar price. The Google Pixel 9a is one of the best phones we’ve reviewed this year, touting great cameras, excellent software updates, reliable battery life, and good performance. It also has a much better fingerprint sensor. The Pixel 9a is more expensive at $499, but at the time of publication, it’s on sale for just $399.

The $400 Moto G Stylus (2025) is another good alternative. And if you’re okay with some possible carrier quirks, the Nothing Phone 3a and 3a Pro are better buys, too. There are lots of great Android phones available in the ~$400 range, but the Galaxy A36 5G isn’t one of them.

Motorola Moto G (2025)

Speaking of Moto G phones, there’s another one in Motorola’s current portfolio that’s better left untouched. The Moto G (2025) features a nice design and a decent display, and at just $200, it appears to be an incredible bargain. However, this is one of those cases where appearances can be deceiving.

Ryan didn’t beat around the bush in our Moto G (2025) review, simply saying that he doesn’t think you should buy the phone — and I fully agree with him. The Moto G (2025) is plagued with slow performance, disappointing cameras, weak water resistance, and a terrible software update policy. (Motorola promises just two years of Android OS updates.)

You may be willing to overlook a few compromises with a phone as cheap as the Moto G (2025), but the fact is that you can do a lot better for your money. The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G has the same $200 price tag, but it’s a better phone overall. If you live outside of the US or are okay with some possible carrier issues, the CMF Phone 2 Pro is an unbelievable bargain for just $279.

The Pocket S2 is the most powerful Android gaming handheld you can buy, with a massive battery to boot. Only small sticks and a non-OLED screen keep it from achieving absolute perfection, if you can afford it.

When it comes to truly premium Android gaming handhelds, AYANEO practically owns the market. Its devices are admitedly niche compared to the likes of Retroid and ANBERNIC, but they offer premium devices with performance that blows away the competition.

So when it was announced that the Pocket S2 would be one of the first devies to get the Qualcomm’s new handheld-focused G series chips, I was immediately intrigued. Could this be the first of a new generation of ultra powerful Android gaming handhelds?

After a week of testing, I’m confident that the answer is yes. Does that mean you should actually buy it? That’s still up for debate.

Sleek and slender

Before I get to the chipset, let’s talk about the design of the AYANEO Pocket S2. At first glance, the all glass front and flat form-factor make it look an awful lot like a phone, which doesn’t sound like good news for ergonomics.

But I’m happy to say that it actually feels great to hold. The aluminum frame is perfectly curved and smooth, with the plastic back providing a little extra grip for your fingers. It uses the same flat design philosophy as the Nintendo Switch, but with a more premium build.

The other thing that makes it comfortable to hold are the stacked triggers. Like the Nintendo Switch, they flare out from the back, and provide a nice little ledge to rest your fingers on. They’re much more pronounced than the triggers on my OG Switch, and the triggers themselves have a nice, grippy texture.

The Pocket S2 is more comfortable to hold than a Switch, with a premium feel.

Unlike the Switch, the rest of the controls are also great. The buttons offer a satisfying amount of resistance, although I did find them a bit on the small side. The sticks are also on the smaller side and I’d highly recommend picking up bigger stick caps or replacing the sticks altogether if you’re going to play FPS games. They pop right off, so it’s a quick fix.

Size aside, they are high-end TMR electromagnetic sticks. This technology is essentially the successor to Hall effect sticks, providing many of the same benefits but with better precision, resolution, and battery efficiency. I’m sure these will never drift as badly as my Switch sticks do, even after replacing them once.

The D-pad, on the other hand, is perfect. It’s an absolute joy to use, and if you swing for the Pocket S2 Pro, it comes with a second, shield-style alternative. There’s a small tool to pluck out the D-pad to install the other one, and it’s just as easy as swapping the keys on a mechanical keyboard. It’s completely unnecessary and no one else does it, but it does spark joy.

Speaking of sparking joy, the Pocket S2 marks the return of a fan favorite feature: a headphone jack. I’m glad AYANEO decided to listen to the fans on this one, because it doesn’t make much sense to omit them on gaming handhelds. On phones you can argue it helps with water resistance, but I’m not taking the Pocket S2 anywhere close to the pool, no matter how hot it gets this summer.

My only complaint, other than the smaller sticks, is the screen. It’s a gorgeous, 6.3-inch 1440p IPS display with great colors and brightness, but at this price, it feels like it should be more. Don’t get me wrong, I love gaming on this screen, but OLED should be the standard here. Or at the very least, a 120hz refresh-rate to enable black frame insertion on retro titles. That’s available on cheaper devices like the Odin 2 Portal or even the ANBERNIC RG 477M.

The screen is the only component that isn’t top-spec.

Still, the whole package looks and feels premium. It’s also relatively light for the size, weighing in at 440g. That’s very similar to the Odin 2 Portal (430g) and significantly less than something like the Steam Deck OLED, which weighs a whopping 640g.

Obviously the Steam Deck is a different class of device, but there’s a reason I’m comparing them, and it’s because the Pocket S2 packs way more power than any other Android handheld released until now.

Unmatched power

I ran the Pocket S2 through our standard suite of benchmarks, and it confirmed what I already knew: this thing is a beast. Let’s compare the scores to other popular handhelds, including the AYANEO Pocket ACE (Snapdragon G3 Gen 2), AYN Odin 2 Portal (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2), ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 (also the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3), and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 (Snapdragon 865).

In terms of multi-core CPU performance, we’re looking at a more than 25% increase over the previous leader, the AYN Odin 2 Portal. It even outperforms the SUGAR 1, which has the same chipset. That device has two screens and a less-than-ideal cooling setup, but it could also be chalked up to AYANEO’s years of experience with Android handhelds.

Moving on to GPU performance, we see even more drastic results. The Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 is essentially a gaming-oriented Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so it makes sense that it outperforms the competition. Still, I wasn’t expecting the delta to be so large. It scored 20% higher than the Pocket ACE, and more than 40% higher than the Odin 2 Portal. Needless to say, the Retroid Pocket Flip 2’s older chipset is completely outclassed here.

It isn’t easy to see in the graphs, but the G3 Gen 3 on the Pocket S2 also made gains in terms of sustained performance. These tests rate devices for stability, essentially comparing the best and worst results after 20 runs, and the G3 Gen 3 scored roughly 91%. That’s up from 85% on its predecessor, but still less than the 99% on mainline chips.

Temperatures were also well within control, peaking at just 42 degrees celcius. Compared to 46 degrees on the Pocket ACE, that’s remarkably cool. Those temperatures are also focused in the center of the device, so I never felt any heat on my hands while holding it.

In other words, it’s the new most powerful Android gaming handheld on the market by a heathly margin when looking at the raw data. But how does it perform in Android games and emulators? Spoiler: also great.

This thing ran literally everything I could throw at it. Obviously retro games play like a dream, even with very heavy shaders. Revisiting some of my favorite retro titles with the CRT-Royale shader is an incredible experience, even with the black bars on the sides. PS2 with widescreen hacks also ran at 3X resolution without breaking a sweat.

When it comes to more modern stuff, it still gets the job done. I was actually surprised how well Nintendo Switch emulation worked on this device. Nearly every game was playable, including some titles that don’t work on the previous generation of powerful handhelds. It’s still not perfect and games still play better on original hardware, but this is the first time that I wouldn’t mind playing through an entire Switch game on non-Switch hardware.

For these kinds of emulators, it all really comes down to drivers. When the Snapdragon G3 Gen 2 debuted on the Pocket EVO and DMG, it was a major issue, even with Android games. Now, it’s a total non-issue. You can spoof other devices in settings, but I doubt you’ll ever need to.

AYANEO announced that it’s working closely with Qualcomm on drivers starting with this release, and it really shows here. The company also sent test devices (including the Pocket S2) to the developers behind the Nintendo Switch emulator Eden, which might explain why it works so well right out of the box.

The Pocket S2 is the most powerful Android handheld on the market.

I’ll also note that this chipset is great for game streaming, with WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 supported. However, the smaller sticks on the Pocket S2 made it a little uncomfortable to play modern PC games, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for that. There are cheaper devices with larger sticks that perform every bit as well.

Another big selling point for the Pocket S2 is battery life. The standard model comes with a massive 8,000mAh battery, while the Pro model ups that to 10,000mAh. That was enough for well over five hours of intense gaming, or more than a dozen in lighter retro titles.

Charging is also speedy, jumping from 20% to 90% in about 75 minutes. The 60W max charging speeds I tested are exclusive to the Pro model, however, with the standard maxing out at 40W. Even so, you won’t need to spend much time tethered to a charger with the Pocket S2.

While I was very impressed throughout my testing period with this device, the events of the past week have made it considerably harder to recommend. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic device and you will probably love it if you decide to buy it, but the premium price tag is tough to stomach, especially when AYANEO itself is releasing compelling alternatives.

The standard version of the AYANEO Pocket S2 comes with 8-12GB of RAM and 128-256GB of internal storage. The Pro model bumps that up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB-1TB of storage, plus a larger battery and a swappable D-pad. Personally, I think the lowest tier of the Pro model is the best value, since you’ll be able to play everything at the highest quality. That said, it will run you $559 during the crowdfunding campaign, and $619 retail. That’s well into Windows handheld territory in terms of pricing.

The problem is that unless you absolutely need the maximum amount of power, there are plenty of devices that cost a lot less or have more interesting designs. Just this week AYANEO announced the dual-screened Pocket DS, which has the previous G3 Gen 2 but pairs it with a massive 7-inch 165Hz OLED panel and a 5-inch LCD panel on the bottom. That makes it an extremely unique handheld, and although full pricing hasn’t been revealed, we already know it’s going to be cheaper than the Pocket 2S.

Unless you want maximum power, there are compelling alternatives, even from AYANEO.

It also announced a sub-brand called KONKR, and its first device, the Pocket FIT, looks like a solid alternative to the Pocket S2. It has a 6-inch 144Hz LCD display, and it’s powered by the the same G3 Gen 3 as the Pocket S2. That means you can get the same incredible performance for what will surely over a hundred dollars less, although there will be other tradeoffs in build quality.

Neither of those products have launched yet, so you won’t be able to get your hands on them until fall or winter. We also don’t have all of the details yet, so there may be downsides that make the Pocket S2 look more attractive in hindsight.

Outside of AYANEO’s offerings, you’ve got reliable devices like the AYN Odin 2 Portal ($329 at Manufacturer site). You’re trading the extra power of the newer chipset for a 120Hz AMOLED display, albeit at 1080p instead of 1440p. That device has been available for more than six months now, so you can find it for $200 less than the Pocket S2.

That said, if you do want power, the AYANEO Pocket S2 is the most powerful Android gaming handheld you can get right now. This device is at the absolute bleeding edge of performance, and if you can’t wait for other devices to catch up, your best bet is to buy one before the crowdfunding campaign ends in mid-August.

A rapidly evolving bank malware now has far greater capabilities to infect Android devices and steal personal information, according to researchers.

The cybersecurity firm Zimperium says the so-called DoubleTrouble trojan “has rapidly evolved in both its distribution methods and capabilities,” and is now permeating channels on the social platform Discord.

“In its latest evolution, the malware has integrated several new and advanced features, significantly expanding its capabilities beyond earlier iterations. These enhancements enable more effective data theft, device manipulation, and evasion techniques.

The new functionalities include: displaying malicious UI overlays to steal PIN codes or unlock patterns, comprehensive screen recording capabilities, the ability to block the opening of specific applications, and advanced keylogging functionality.”

Researchers say the malware convinces users to download it by masking itself as an extension or an add-on, and it uses the Google Play icon to appear trustworthy.

It also manipulates device functionality by exploiting Android’s Accessibility Services, allowing it to block legitimate banking or security apps with misleading “system maintenance” prompts.

In addition, the malicious software simulates user actions like taps and swipes, allowing attackers to remotely control infected devices and steal data, including passwords and banking details, with alarming precision.

The trojan’s attacks are ongoing, primarily targeting users in Europe through phishing websites and Discord-hosted APKs. Specific victim counts remain unknown at time of publishing.

Android Auto has always been pretty strict about what kinds of apps are allowed, but Google is starting to loosen up now, and NewPipe isn’t wasting any time. Thanks to the latest app update, the open-source YouTube alternative now works on your car’s infotainment screen.

In a blog post, the NewPipe team says you can now browse your watch history, load playlists, or search for new content within Android Auto. The developers still urge caution when using the feature, even though Google already has guardrails to prevent you from getting distracted as you’re cruising along.

If YouTube on Android Auto sounds familiar, it’s probably because people have been hacking together ways to watch the ubiquitous streaming service in the car for a while. These workarounds usually involve third-party tools like CarStream or screen mirroring their phone, but they’re usually a bit clunky and prone to breaking. This is an early example of video playback arriving through Android Auto’s official app support, with no trickery needed.

This update follows Google’s broader plan to allow more app categories on Android Auto. Video and browser apps are now officially on the roadmap, with limited functionality in parked mode and an audio-only option coming to Android Automotive.

You won’t find NewPipe on the Play Store, but it’s easy enough to grab from the project’s website or the F-Droid catalog if you want to give it a spin.

Scam calls aren’t slowing down and are getting smarter in many cases. While most modern smartphones already do a decent job of flagging suspicious numbers, NordVPN thinks it can do better. The company has just launched a new Scam Call Protection feature for Android phone users in the US.

In a blog post published this week, NordVPN explained that the tool analyzes call metadata to detect potential fraud before you even pick up. If it spots something suspicious, it flashes a warning message next to the incoming number. The feature is included with NordVPN’s Premium plan and works through the existing app, whether connected to a VPN or not. Once enabled in the Threat Protection tab, it runs quietly in the background.

If you’ve used a recent Pixel or Samsung phone, this might all sound pretty familiar. Google offers built-in AI-powered scam detection on Pixels, including mid-call warnings that alert you if the conversation starts to resemble a scam. Samsung uses a system called Smart Call that can identify spam calls and even block them outright.

NordVPN’s approach differs in a couple of ways. Unlike Google’s tool, it doesn’t process any audio — just metadata. And while Samsung’s protection is tied to its own phone software, NordVPN’s version works on any Android device running its app. It’s also designed with privacy in mind, storing no call content and keeping detection on-device.

The company says future updates will add features like caller ID for unknown numbers, better categorization (such as finance or healthcare), and even the option for you to report suspicious calls. It also plans to bring Scam Call Protection to iPhones and other countries.

You might not see this feature as worth the NordVPN Premium price alone, but with scam call losses topping $2 billion in the US last year, the layer of defense is probably welcome for those already on the plan.

Should all app listings be created the same? At first glance, it might make sense to expect all app listings in the Play Store to have the same stuff: description, screenshots, device compatibility, and a place to submit and read reviews. Back at the start of the year, though, we started to become aware of a change Google was working on that would seriously pare down the content available in Play Store listings for some apps, resulting in a minimalistic app listing just containing a basic synopsis. And now it finally looks like this new view is starting to roll out widely.

Not all apps are built equally, and the ones we first saw associated with this minimal new Play Store layout were all Android system services — the sort of things the vast majority of users will never have to think twice about, let alone try to pull them up on the Play Store. At the time, we speculated that Google’s reasoning for this change might involve wanting to limit the ability of users to take out their frustrations with undesirable system behavior by review-bombing these apps.

As if heralded by that release, we’ve started to receive reports from users who are now seeing the new listing format live on their devices.

Odds are, you won’t stumble across any of these naturally — these aren’t the kind of apps most people go looking for in the first place, and they won’t even show up in a regular search. But if you’re browsing installed apps on your phone and tap through out of curiosity — well, now you’ve got no excuse for being surprised.
