Constitutional scholars use the “autocratic signaling” when leaders test public tolerance by “just wondering” if dictatorship might be preferable. Trump did exactly that today when he complained about Illinois Governor Pritzker’s resistance to his plans for a military takeover of Chicago. He said, “A lot of people are saying maybe we’d like a dictator.”

When a president jokes, flirts, or wonders out loud whether Americans might want a dictator — even if he immediately walks it back — he is testing the boundaries of what the public, the press, and other power centers will tolerate. Dictatorships rarely arrive with tanks in the streets; they arrive when the language of democracy is hollowed out from within.

Minutes later, Trump signed an order criminalizing flag-burning with a one-year jail term, a statute twice voided by the Supreme Court. Such knowingly illegal directives force civil-liberties defenders to burn political capital, cast courts as deep state saboteurs, and stockpile grievances for future court-stacking or emergency decrees. The stunt also diverts attention from renewed scrutiny of his Epstein-Maxwell ties, a classic authoritarian feint: flood the zone with shit so critics chase the latest outrage.

From Rolling Stone:

It shouldn’t be surprising considering the praise Trump has long lavished on autocratic rulers around the world — from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kim Jong-un of North Korea, or what some of his own former administration officials have said about him. John Kelly, who served as both secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and White House chief of staff during Trump’s first term, said ahead of the 2024 election that Trump “certainly prefers the dictator approach to government.”

“Well, looking at the definition of fascism: It’s a far-right authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy,” Kelly toldThe New York Times, when asked if Trump is a fascist. “So certainly, in my experience, those are the kinds of things that he thinks would work better in terms of running America.”

Americans are drinking less alcohol than ever. That’s great news. https://earlybirdsinvest.com/americans-are-drinking-less-alcohol-than-ever-thats-great-news/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/americans-are-drinking-less-alcohol-than-ever-thats-great-news/#respond Sat, 16 Aug 2025 20:49:37 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/americans-are-drinking-less-alcohol-than-ever-thats-great-news/

Today, around 8,200 or so Americans will turn 21. Which means, of course, they will become eligible to engage in that time-honored habit of adulthood: drinking alcohol. (I’m sure absolutely none of them did so before they turned 21. I certainly did not, or at least, would not admit to doing so in this piece, which I know my parents read.)

Yet those who get the chance to legally order a beer or a wine or, God help them, a Long Island iced tea, may find the bar a little less crowded these days. According to a new survey released by Gallup this week, just 54 percent of Americans now say they drink alcohol. That’s the lowest share since Gallup began tracking the question way back in 1939, six years after Prohibition was repealed.

Even Americans who do continue to drink say they are drinking less, and say they’re increasingly concerned about the health impacts of alcohol. A narrow majority of Americans say that even moderate drinking is unhealthy, while reported drinking frequency also hit record lows. (Only 24 percent reported having a drink over the past 24 hours, while 40 percent said it had been more than a week since their last glass.) And while you might be skeptical of self-reporting drinking habits — doctors certainly are — the most recent sales data says that per-capita ethanol consumption in the US has fallen from nearly 2.8 gallons in the early 1980s to around 2.5 in 2022.

Unless you happen to be in the booze business, this shift is 100-proof good news (with a few caveats). Drinking can lead to various social and medical ills, from the familial and financial devastation of alcoholism at the high end to increases in the risk of cancer and other diseases even at the lower end.

But in a culture which seems to celebrate and encourage drinking, what’s up with more Americans putting down their glasses?

Americans of a certain age — i.e., me — probably remember hearing that a glass of red wine a day could be good for you. Which, looking back, seems absurd. Ethanol in any form is a toxin. But thanks in part to what became known as the “French paradox” — the fact that the French showed low levels of heart disease despite their love of rich, fatty foods and glasses of Bordeaux — conventional wisdom settled on the idea that moderate drinking could actually benefit our overall health.

If only. In the argot of Alcoholics Anonymous, medical science is having a “moment of clarity” around alcohol. It turns out that “no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health,” as the World Health Organization put it in 2023. One major meta-analysis that same year found that there are in fact no mortality benefits at low levels of alcohol consumption, and that risk for a number of health threats rises as consumption increases.

Those threats include numerous cancers, like breast, colorectal, liver, and esophageal. Even low-level drinking can lead to increased blood pressure, higher stroke risk, and disrupted sleep — which in turn can lead to a host of health problems over time. It’s no surprise that more and more countries — though not yet the US — are giving their citizens official guidance that no level of alcohol consumption can be recommended.

The decline and fall of teen drinking

Whether or not American adults are actually listening to their doctors, the decline in alcohol consumption is real. What’s even more remarkable — and even better news — is the sharper decline in drinking among people who legally shouldn’t be doing it at all: the underage.

In 2024, according to one long-running youth survey, 42 percent of 12th graders reported drinking alcohol, down significantly from 75 percent in 1997 (which happens to be the year I graduated high school, and no, I will not be commenting on which side of the survey I fell on). For 10th graders it was 26 percent (down from 65 percent) and for eighth graders it was 13 percent (down from 46 percent in 1997, which yikes). For those underage Americans who are drinking, the percentage who engage in binge drinking has also fallen in recent years, albeit less sharply.

The benefits of reduced teen drinking are even clearer than they are with adults. About 4,000 Americans under the age of 21 every year die from excessive alcohol consumption, whether in car crashes, drownings, or suicides and homicides. Underage drinking is correlated with worse academic performance, risky behavior in general, and an increased chance of alcohol abuse disorder down the line.

Alcohol is really bad — with one caveat

Here’s one of the more unbelievable stats I’ve ever seen: scholars believe that something like 40 percent of all murders involve the use of alcohol. That’s just one example of the effects of dangerous levels of alcohol consumption. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates around 178,000 excess deaths each year from alcohol abuse, of which over 12,000 were deaths in drunk driving accidents — meaning one out of every three car crash deaths might not have happened without alcohol.

Less alcohol consumption means less of all of this. Fewer violent deaths in drunken homicides or car crashes, and fewer lives cut short over the long term because of alcohol-connected illness. It means fewer families torn apart by alcohol abuse, and fewer children who endure the long-term trauma of being the child of an alcoholic.

If there’s any downside to this drop in drinking, it’s the possibility that the decline is being driven by a decline of socializing more generally. Americans are spending more time alone than ever before, and that comes with very serious health and social impacts of its own. We have, oh, several thousand years of evidence that alcohol consumption in moderate, responsible levels is pretty good for socializing, and right now, many of us need all the help we can get.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting everyone stop drinking — or start drinking just to make friends. I myself enjoy a drink, and for now I’m comfortable with the trade-off that comes with moderate drinking. But the benefits to the country overall of less drinking are impossible to dismiss. That’s worth raising a mocktail to.

Tens of thousands of Americans are staring at the possibility of fraud after thieves stole their information from a healthcare firm.

In a notice to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the Arkansas-based Highlands Oncology Group says 113,575 Americans are impacted by a massive cybersecurity incident.

In a data incident notice posted on its website, Highlands says that an unauthorized entity gained access to its systems and stole files that may include patients’ names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license/state identification numbers, passport numbers, credit/debit card numbers, financial account numbers, medical treatment records, medical record numbers, patient account numbers,  and/or health insurance policy records.

“Highlands Oncology Group PA recently discovered a data incident that may have involved the personal information for certain individuals. On June 2, 2025, Highlands discovered it was the victim of a cyber-attack, and certain Highlands files and systems were inaccessible…

The forensic investigation determined that an unauthorized third party accessed Highlands’ computer network at times between January 21, 2025, and June 2, 2025, and encrypted some of its files. The investigation also determined that the third party may have accessed and acquired certain files from Highlands’ systems during this period.”

Highlands offers a full spectrum of cancer care services, including chemotherapy, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, as well as supportive services like rehabilitation, massage, lymphedema therapy, genetic counseling and pharmacy.

The firm says it has sent letters of notification to affected individuals, while offering complimentary identity theft protection services for those whose Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state ID numbers were involved in the incident.

Highlands is encouraging patients to stay vigilant by reviewing their account statements and reporting any suspicious activity that could suggest fraud or identity theft.

A firm that specializes in allowing people to compare insurance quotes is preparing to hand $19 million to Americans in a new settlement.

QuoteWizard is accused of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by sending text message solicitations to people on the National Do Not Call Registry.

According to the settlement, QuoteWizard is preparing to pay the $19 million without admitting guilt, and the deadline for people to exclude and object to their share is August 5th.

The case was filed by lead plaintiff Joseph Mantha back in 2019, and the final settlement approval hearing is set for September 29th.

No claim form is required for payments, and class members will automatically be paid as long as they don’t exclude themselves.

Class members are expected to receive a minimum of $76 per person, and a dedicated website and toll-free number will be launched with additional details.

Bank Employees And Co-Conspirators Allegedly Orchestrate $8,800,000 Fraud Scheme Targeting Elderly Americans in Multi-State Operation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-employees-and-co-conspirators-allegedly-orchestrate-8800000-fraud-scheme-targeting-elderly-americans-in-multi-state-operation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-employees-and-co-conspirators-allegedly-orchestrate-8800000-fraud-scheme-targeting-elderly-americans-in-multi-state-operation/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 19:30:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-employees-and-co-conspirators-allegedly-orchestrate-8800000-fraud-scheme-targeting-elderly-americans-in-multi-state-operation/

A multi-state, multi-million dollar investigation dubbed Operation Teller-to-Telegram just concluded with the arrest of several individuals who allegedly engaged in a bank fraud scheme that targeted the elderly.

In a statement, the office of the Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier says that eight individuals behind an $8.8 million bank fraud ring are now facing RICO charges, criminal use of personal information and other serious felonies.

The fraud operation involved three bank employees in Maryland, identified as Barbara Frazee, Camala Shafer, and Antonio Penn, who allegedly sold and shared the account information of senior customers using the encrypted mobile messaging app Telegram.

The other perpetrators used the victims’ names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and bank account information to drain savings, then transferred the stolen funds to accounts that they opened.

Says Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd,

“This wasn’t some small-time scam, this was a well-organized fraud ring stealing millions from innocent victims across the country. They thought they could hide behind mobile apps and fake accounts, but we found them, and we’ll continue to go after anyone who targets hardworking people’s life savings. Racketeering is a serious crime, and we will pursue as many felonies as possible against each one of these suspects.”

Frazee, Shafer and Penn are now facing charges along with their alleged co-conspirators: Okeroghene Akushe, Michael Nevarez, Roshado Durrant, Hassan Phillips and Kevin Clayton.

A major cybersecurity incident has exposed sensitive personal and health records of tens of thousands of Americans.

In a notice, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) says 103,000 individuals across the United States with accounts on Medicare.gov are impacted by a data breach.

CMS says it discovered that user data had been compromised after receiving multiple complaints through its call center. According to the federal agency, hackers may have used information from external sources to collect data such as names, dates of birth, Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers, coverage start dates and ZIP codes to fraudulently create Medicare.gov accounts.

Once inside, the thieves gained access to more sensitive data, including provider details, mailing addresses, dates of service, diagnosis codes, services received and plan premiums.

“On May 2, 2025, representatives at our 1-800-MEDICARE call center flagged complaints from people with Medicare who had received a letter through the mail about the creation of a Medicare.gov account. However, these callers hadn’t created the accounts or asked anyone else to do it for them.

Noticing the similarities in the reports, we investigated further and discovered more cases of accounts created between 2023 and 2025 that matched this pattern. We quickly deactivated those accounts, while also launching a larger effort to find the bad actors who created them.”

The CMS is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services tasked with overseeing the country’s healthcare programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Health Insurance Marketplace.

The CMS is encouraging affected individuals to get a free credit report from each of the three major nationwide credit reporting companies. The agency also says that it hasn’t received any reports of identity fraud or improper use of personal information as a result of the incident.

On July 10–11, 2025, Bitcoin surged past its previous highs to reach a new all-time-high – $118,403.89 in the early hours of July 11, 2025.

That price marks a monumental shift in the crypto landscape. What began as a modest breakout above $112,000 in early July has quickly turned into a rally with deep roots – both structural and speculative.

Bitcoin price performance

Good fundamentals and a general bullish outlook could send Bitcoin even higher. And as Bitcoin rises, key altcoins and meme coins – including Snorter Token ($SNORT) – could be poised to take off.

Here’s what it all means for Bitcoin and for investors considering what happens next.

Institutional Investor Momentum Is Unmistakable

BlackRock’s spot‑Bitcoin ETF, $IBIT, now totals over $79B, tripling in less than a year. That’s a feat that took the largest gold ETF over a decade to accomplish. And $IBIT isn’t the only Bitcoin ETF to have a good day; spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a whopping $1.18B in net inflows yesterday.

With the rise in Bitcoin’s price, and the growth of ETFs, $IBIT in particular is blazing new territory, entering the top tier of spot ETFs.

Bitcoin ETF overview

The flood of capital into ETFs, combined with low exchange inflows (~3,200 BTC per day, levels unseen since 2015), suggests long-term bullish sentiment and limited spot selling pressure.

Bitcoin exchange reserves

Macroeconomic trends further strengthen BTC’s case. The recent passage of the U.S. $3.3T ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ expanded fiscal deficit expectations by $410B, encouraging investors toward Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and fiat weakness .

On top of this, hopes for a Federal Reserve rate cut – possibly in September – have added fuel to the rally.

Regulatory tailwinds, including stablecoin legislation and crypto‑friendly governance, are reshaping investor confidence.

From Institutional Confidence to Corporate and Retail Adoption

Corporations have joined the fray, accumulating $BTC as reserve assets. Notable firms with Bitcoin reserves include:

  • MicroStrategy
  • GameStop
  • Tesla
  • South Korea’s K Wave Media

The crypto ecosystem as a whole is rallying. Altcoins like Ethereum (+8.3%), Solana (+3.96%), XRP (+5.7%), and Dogecoin (+9%) are experiencing renewed investor interest.

That interest is supported on the retail side by growing consumer adoption. A recent report from Jan Wüstenfeld’s Bit of Bitcoin Research (Issue #13) shows a number of growing adoption points:

  • 48M Americans (18.6% of adults) own Bitcoin
  • 11M Americans (4.21%) keep Bitcoin in self-custody
  • Bitcoin owners are younger, more likely to be men, and increasingly non-white.
  • Bitcoin owners cover the whole spectrum politically, with only a slight rightward shift; not as politicized as is often portrayed.

Technical support currently sits around $113K, with resistance at $120K and $128.5K. And Bitcoin isn’t out of the woods – historical volatility and its correlation with traditional markets mean adverse macro events, like tariff wars or market downturns, could trigger price pullbacks.

Top ten cryptos performance

In the meantime, it’s full steam ahead, with the top 15 non-stablecoin cryptos showing green across the board.

It’s a rising tide, and all the boats are going up. For projects like Snorter Token ($SNORT), it’s the perfect example of perfect timing.

Snorter Token ($SNORT) – As Bitcoin Rises, Find Hidden Meme Coin Gems With Snorter Bot

Meme coins are funny things; thousands are created every day, with countless opportunities for major gains. But the average investor will never see those chances, with many meme coins appearing (and disappearing) on platforms like Telegram.

Investors with the Snorter Token ($SNORT) are a different story. With the Snorter Bot, they can sniff out the best meme coin opportunities, turning hidden gems into potential gold mines. That’s because Snorter is a custom-built meme coin trading bot, designed to find low-cap Solana meme coins trading on Telegram.

Sniff Out Meme Coin Market with Snorter Token

With $SNORT, investors gain early access to new tokens and the best meme coins, finding hidden opportunities before other traders know they’re there. $SNORT provides low trading fees on the Solana blockchain, lightning-fast execution times, and front-running and MEV protection.

The Snorter Bot itself provides an advanced trading utility:

  • Fast, secure swaps
  • Automated sniping
  • Rugpull and honeypot protection
  • Copy trading
  • Limit orders

The $SNORT presale is gaining steam, with $1.7M raised to date. Investors can snap up $SNORT tokens for only $0.0979 if they act now – learn how to buy Snorter Token in our guide.

A Bitcoin Bull Run Bodes Well for Meme Coins

Bitcoin’s climb to the $118K+ range isn’t driven by speculation alone. It reflects deep institutional adoption, macro trends favoring scarce digital assets, and growing corporate treasury use.

As a result, the number of retail investors is growing, pushing altcoins and memecoins, as well as meme coins, ever higher.

As always, do your own research – this isn’t financial advice.

Alleged Mastermind Behind $30,000,000 Scam That Targeted Elderly Americans Arrested: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alleged-mastermind-behind-30000000-scam-that-targeted-elderly-americans-arrested-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alleged-mastermind-behind-30000000-scam-that-targeted-elderly-americans-arrested-report/#respond Tue, 08 Jul 2025 11:41:22 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/alleged-mastermind-behind-30000000-scam-that-targeted-elderly-americans-arrested-report/

A 42-year-old man who is accused of running a $30 million scam targeting elderly Americans has reportedly just been arrested in Canada.

Gareth West was arrested in Quebec on behalf of American authorities and is now facing extradition to the United States to face fraud charges, reports CBC/Radio-Canada.

West is alleged to have posed as a wealthy real estate developer while running a complex “grandparent scam network” that employed more than 20 people and included multiple call centers in the Montreal area.

He faces charges in the US of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

West is alleged to have been the mastermind behind grandparent scammers since at least 2021. The scammers would allegedly phone older Americans, pretend they were their grandchildren who had been arrested or hurt, and say they needed cash right away. Scammers would connect the elderly victims to fake lawyers or bail agents and arrange for cash pickups.

Some 23 of West’s alleged scammer employees were arrested in March.

Police allege that documents they’ve recovered from the suspected scammers show they scammed $30 million during a span of about 67 weeks.

West faces up to 40 years in prison if extradited to the US and convicted of the crimes.

In a new filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the doughnut and coffeehouse giant says it has discovered a computer hack affecting 161,676 employees, former employees and members of their families.

In a statement, the firm says that an unknown actor gained unauthorized access to the retailer’s information technology systems, stealing multiple types of data.

According to Krispy Kreme, the attacker may have siphoned sensitive personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and driver’s license or state ID numbers. The thief may have also copied financial data such as financial account access records, credit or debit card entries, along with security codes, as well as usernames and passwords to financial accounts.

Other customer data that might have been seized include digital signatures, usernames and passwords, email addresses and passwords, biometric records, USCIS or Alien Registration Numbers, US military ID numbers, medical or health records and health insurance entries.

“On November 29, 2024, Krispy Kreme became aware of unauthorized activity on a portion of its information technology systems. Upon learning of the unauthorized activity, we immediately began taking steps to investigate, contain, and remediate the incident with the assistance of leading cybersecurity experts.

On May 22, 2025, our investigation into the incident determined that certain personal information was affected. There is no evidence that the information has been misused, and we are not aware of any reports of identity theft or fraud as a direct result of this incident.”

Krispy Kreme says it abruptly sent letters of notification to affected customers to provide more information about the cybersecurity incident, while offering free credit monitoring and identity protection services.

The firm says it is revamping its security protocols “to further protect the privacy of the data entrusted to us.”

A major cybersecurity incident at a healthcare firm may have exposed the sensitive personal and health records of more than 100,000 Americans.

In a new filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, North Carolina-based optical care firm Asheville Eye Associates says it discovered a serious data breach affecting 147,116 people.

In a statement, the firm says that an unknown attacker breached its systems and siphoned patient data from its network, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical treatment reports and health insurance records.

“On January 31, 2025, Asheville Eye Associates (AEA) notified individuals that it had detected and stopped a network security incident. An unauthorized party gained access to our network and acquired certain files from our systems. We quickly engaged third-party specialists to assist us with securing the network environment and investigating the incident.

Since that time, AEA has completed a comprehensive review and investigation of the potentially affected records and systems. Through that subsequent investigation, which concluded on April 14, 2025, we identified additional individuals whose personal information was contained in the affected records.”

Asheville Eye Associates is a firm specializing in ophthalmology services, offering cataract surgery, laser surgery for glaucoma and diabetes, LASIK and other procedures to treat ophthalmic disorders.

The firm says it abruptly sent letters of notification to impacted individuals to provide more information about the cybersecurity incident, while offering access to free credit monitoring services to people whose Social Security numbers were compromised.

For now, Asheville Eye Associates says it has not detected any instance of identity theft related to the data breach.
