Shares of American Eagle Outfitters (AEO 0.21%) rallied 19.8% in August, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

American Eagle capitalized on July’s optimism regarding its new ad campaign starring actress Sydney Sweeney when President Trump endorsed the company’s campaign in early August. Then later in the month, American Eagle announced a collaboration with Kansas City Chiefs tight end and Taylor Swift fiancée Travis Kelce.

American Eagle’s investment in celebrity pays off

American Eagle’s stock got a bump in late July when it launched a controversial ad with actress Sydney Sweeney with the byline, “Sydney Sweeney has Great Genes Jeans.” While the stock then faded after an initial lift, President Trump weighed in in early August, writing on his social media platform Truth Social that the ad was, “the HOTTEST out there…the jeans are flying off the shelves.”

In response, investors bid up the stock, thinking the controversy might boost publicity for the brand and therefore subsequent sales.

Then later in the month, American Eagle announced a limited addition collaboration with Travis Kelce’s “Tru Colors” clothing line, which Kelce began in 2019. The new limited edition collection is to be unveiled in two “drops,” with one on Aug. 27, and another upcoming on Sept. 24. As luck would have it, the collaboration announcement came one day after Kelce announced his engagement to music star Taylor Swift.

So, American Eagle nabbed a marketing coup in both late July and into August, grabbing support from the President, as well as arguably two of the biggest celebrities in sports and entertainment.

What will it mean for the stock, though?

The high-profile marketing push — both planned and unplanned – appeared to boost American Eagle’s near-term outlook. On Sept. 3, the company reported its second-quarter earnings results for the quarter ending Aug. 2, beating analyst expectations even though sales and comparable-store sales were each down 1%.

However, management said it was seeing “an uptick in customer awareness, engagement and comparable sales,” as a result of the Sweeney and Kelce campaigns, and projected comps to return to positive low single digits in both Q3 and Q4. That improvement would appear to validate the impact of the Sweeney and Kelce campaigns.

That said, despite a near-20% gain in August and a 20%-plus gain in September thus far, American Eagle’s stock is only up about 12.8% on the year and is still actually 2.3% below where it was one year ago. A cautious consumer, high interest rates, and the Trump administration’s tariffs have all acted as headwinds to the clothing retailer, as it has to many retailers.

Billy Duberstein and/or his clients have no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool recommends American Eagle Outfitters. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

American Bitcoin (ABTC), a newly public bitcoin mining and treasury firm backed by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, opened for trade Wednesday morning after completing its merger with Gryphon Digital Mining (GRYP).

Wasting little time, the company filed for an at-the-market equity raise of up to $2.1 billion with which to continue building its bitcoin (BTC) holdings (which footed to 2,443 coins at the time of the merger).

Shares have rocketed 60% to $11 versus the $6.90 price at the time of the merger Tuesday evening.

Its the latest chapter in American Bitcoin’s rapid formation, which began in March through a combination of the Trump brothers’ American Data Centers and Canadian mining firm Hut 8 (HUT). Hut 8 now holds an 80% ownership stake in the newly listed entity.

American Bitcoin’s business combines bitcoin mining with a corporate treasury approach centered on accumulating the asset. Since its inception earlier this year, the company has amassed 2,443 bitcoin, worth approximately $160 million at current prices. This hybrid model — mining bitcoin while holding it as a balance sheet asset — mirrors strategies used by other high-profile mining firms such as Marathon Digital.

mining company with ties to the Trump family, is planning to go public in September through a listing on the Nasdaq.

American Bitcoin is moving forward with this plan after finalizing a merger with Gryphon Digital Mining, according to Hut 8 CEO Asher Genoot, who spoke to Reuters.

Hut 8, a long-standing player in the crypto mining industry, currently owns 80% of American Bitcoin. Once the merger is completed, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. are expected to jointly hold about 19% of the company.

American Bitcoin was first introduced in March and aims to become one of the leading mining firms in the United States.

When the company goes public, it plans to trade under the ticker symbol ABTC.

In addition to mining Bitcoin, the company has also added some to its corporate holdings. Public filings show that by June, American Bitcoin had collected 215 BTC. With Bitcoin valued at around $112,000 on August 28, that puts the value of its holdings close to $24 million.

If listed, this amount would place American Bitcoin around the 30th spot among US public companies that hold Bitcoin, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries.

For comparison, its majority owner, Hut 8, holds 10,667 BTC, which is currently worth about $1.2 billion. Hut 8 has been holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet since 2017.

Hut 8 recently announced plans to open four new facilities in the United States. Where will these facilities be located? Read the full story.

American Bitcoin, the Bitcoin mining company backed by US President Donald Trump’s two sons, is preparing to begin trading on the Nasdaq in early September after finalizing a merger with Gryphon Digital Mining.

The company has secured both crypto-focused and traditional institutional investors for the all-stock deal, Asher Genoot, CEO of Hut 8, which owns 80% cent of American Bitcoin, told Reuters in an interview.

Anchor shareholders have already been lined up to support the debut.

Once the merger is completed, American Bitcoin will retain its name and trade under the ticker ABTC.

Trump Brothers and Hut 8 Retain Near-Total Control of American Bitcoin After Merger

Co-founders Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr, together with Hut 8, will hold a combined 98% of the entity.

Genoot told Reuters that the team opted for a merger rather than a direct listing. He said the route gave the company better access to financing by leveraging an existing business already connected to capital markets.

American Bitcoin has been exploring acquisitions in Hong Kong and Japan to expand its footprint, the Financial Times reported earlier this month. Genoot confirmed that the company is actively assessing opportunities in Asia, with the aim of giving investors broader access to bitcoin-linked assets beyond the US.

He said that while discussions are under way, no firm commitments have been made. The focus, he added, is to create options for investors who cannot directly buy Nasdaq-listed crypto stocks due to local restrictions.

American Bitcoin Born From Hut 8’s Strategic Shift Into Infrastructure

Founded earlier this year, American Bitcoin emerged from Hut 8’s pivot away from pure crypto mining into energy infrastructure and data centres. The new venture, created in partnership with the Trump brothers, is now positioning itself as a global bitcoin miner with ambitions to expand through acquisitions and partnerships.

The strategy has been described as mirroring the approach of large US-listed bitcoin firms that use equity financing and mergers to accelerate growth. Genoot said the goal is to build a vehicle that can appeal to both institutional investors and retail traders looking for exposure to bitcoin through regulated exchanges.

Contrary to the Trump Administration’s loon, RFK Jr’s unscientific guidance not to vaccinate children, the AAP wants us to protect our kids.

Just as disgusting as RFK Jr’s conspiracy theory-motivated call to endanger children is his department’s attempt to call good science “baseless political attacks.”

The AAP is strongly recommending COVID-19 shots for children ages 6 months to 2 years. Shots also are advised for older children if parents want their kids vaccinated, the AAP said.

That differs from guidance established under U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which doesn’t recommend the shots for healthy children of any age but says kids may get the shots in consultation with physicians.

Children ages 6 months to 2 years are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19, and it was important that recommendations continue to emphasize the need for them to get vaccinated, said Campbell, a University of Maryland infectious diseases expert.

Vaccinations also are recommended for older children who have chronic lung diseases or other conditions that put them at higher risk for severe disease, the AAP said.

In a statement, Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson Andrew Nixon said “the AAP is undermining national immunization policymaking with baseless political attacks.”

Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign: How the ads became a national conversation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/#respond Sat, 02 Aug 2025 03:00:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sydney-sweeneys-american-eagle-campaign-how-the-ads-became-a-national-conversation/

Declaring that an actor has great jeans should technically be a boring way to sell denim. And yet, an American Eagle ad featuring Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney and some poorly conceived wordplay has broken everyone’s brains.

Last week, the mall brand unveiled a series of ads featuring Sweeney sporting their fall collection. One video shows her filming herself on the floor with a dog; another depicts her fixing the engine of a car. All of them end with a booming, male voice declaring “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” with the copy displayed in large font.

The spots that caught the internet’s ire are arguably the most provocative, each an obvious riff on Brooke Shields’ infamous 1980 Calvin Klein commercial, in which the then-15-year-old actor recites facts about genetics (“certain genes may…fade away,” Shields notes) while posing in the company’s denim. The Sweeney ad plays on the same jeans/genes pun, but in a much clumsier fashion and in a very complicated cultural landscape.

“My body’s composition is determined by my genes,” Sweeney starts in one video that’s since been deleted from American Eagle’s social media. The camera starts to zoom in on her chest before she lightly scolds the operator. “Hey, eyes up here.” In another, she says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color.” The camera pans to Sweeney’s eyes, and she says, “My jeans are blue.”

The same pun is used in a poster that reads “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” with the word “genes” crossed out above it. It immediately raised questions about the language of the ad, as well as its blonde-haired, blue-eyed messenger: Are we supposed to want pants or Aryan features?

In its most innocent interpretation, it reads as passe in its use of a “conventionally attractive” spokesmodel. Many, however, have deemed the American Eagle ads a racist dog whistle, some even calling it Nazi propaganda. Meanwhile, voices on the right, including the White House, have celebrated the ads as a middle finger to liberals and “woke.”

The ads are…weird. Why bother buying the jeans if you don’t have the genes it celebrates? Plus, Sweeney’s role in it, given the partisan nonsense she’s been drafted into in the recent past, raises an eyebrow. American Eagle has since clarified its intentions with the ads, stating that the marketing was solely meant to highlight the jeans. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,” read an Instagram statement on August 1. Sweeney has yet to respond.

Regardless, the whole kerfuffle says less about Sweeney herself — or even American Eagle’s marketing team — than about the politically fraught state of media in the US.

A lightning rod on the left and a symbol — voluntary or not — for the right

To comprehend the layers of the controversy, one has to understand the politically charged and paradoxical nature of Sweeney’s image and career thus far.

After landing supporting roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Sharp Objects, Sweeney received her big break on the HBO teen drama Euphoria in 2019 as self-destructive teenager Cassie Howard. Her role on the show, which often sees her character nude or wearing cleavage-baring tops, has contributed to much of Euphoria’s seedy reputation, while also shaping Sweeney’s bombshell image. The show also helped launch her as an aspiring “prestige” actor; her performance earned critical praise, as well as an Emmy nomination in 2022. She earned an additional nomination that year for her role in HBO’s The White Lotus.

This acclaim was followed by the release of the 2023 romantic-comedy Anyone But You, which she starred in opposite Glen Powell and co-produced. The Shakespeare adaptation was marketed with PR-orchestrated rumors about Sweeney and Powell’s relationship and went on to earn over $200 million globally. By all accounts, it seemed poised to be the next big movie star, with all the makings of a savvy entrepreneur.

Then, around 2024, things started to get strange — and loudly. That year, Sweeney hosted Saturday Night Live. The episode featured several jokes about her breasts, and she wore a low-cut dress during “goodnights.” This elicited multiple op-eds from conservative outlets claiming that Sweeney, and her willingness to participate in gags about her own sex appeal, signaled a return to both a pre-MeToo climate and “traditional” beauty standards. In fact, this wasn’t the first time Sweeney had been linked to conservative ideology, correctly or incorrectly. In 2022, she sparked outrage for photos she posted from her mother’s Western-themed birthday party, which showed relatives wearing MAGA hats and Blue Lives Matter gear in the background. She claimed they were merely ironic costumes, an explanation that failed to quell questions about her political leanings.

Today, the idea that Sweeney might be an undercover agent for MAGA — and voluntary bait for incels — is somewhere between a conspiracy theory and a meme. (No matter that she has supported progressive causes, like Black Lives Matter, appeared at the GLAAD Awards, and said she believes “that a woman has the right to be able to decide over her body.”) Her endorsement work includes brand deals with the country-inspired HeyDude and personal care company Dr. Squatch. By the time she released a soap supposedly made from her own bathwater with the latter company, her critics seemed exhausted by her whole schtick.

“I think her and her camp probably think that they’re playing into [her sexuality] with a wink and a smile and being self-aware about her being consumed as this sex object and that she is in control,” says Garrett Mireles, a New York and Tennessee-based brand strategist and copywriter. “How that’s received in the public eye isn’t as nuanced.”

Mireles says the fact that Sweeney is an actor cast in other people’s work and ideas complicates her ability to control the way her image comes across and who exactly she wants to appeal to.

“Sweeney doesn’t get to control the message as much as a musician does,” Mireles says. “Sabrina Carpenter, for example, is able to exert a sense of humor in her sexuality and to be a little bit more overtly tongue-in-cheek.”

Everything feels like bait in our current culture war

The American Eagle ads felt especially trollish because they seemed to hit on both of the accusations looming over Sweeney’s career: She’s too sexualized, and she’s promoting some sort of right-wing agenda. In this case, the right-coded overtones of the ad — heralding a blonde, white woman’s genes as the epitome of beauty and “goodness” — hit a lot harder.

Any implication of “good genes,” pun or not, would ring alarms in our political climate. Currently, ICE and the Trump administration have undertaken the most aggressive deportation effort in years, including the gleeful construction of an alligator-surrounded detainment center that has been compared to a concentration camp. When talking about crimes committed by immigrants, President Donald Trump has said there are a “lot of bad genes in our country.” Meanwhile, Health Department secretary Robert F. Kennedy has been accused of promoting “soft eugenics” through his proposals to eliminate vaccines and lifesaving health services that would disproportionately impact certain populations.

Outside of politics, pop culture is also feeling a lot more Trump-friendly these days. From country artists dominating the charts from trad-wife content online to celebrities cozying up to the president, it seems like everyone is embracing the reign of MAGA and the tastes of his voter base. This has made every piece of pop culture, from influencers to ad campaigns, fodder for viewing through a MAGA lens. At the same time, the right has made efforts to insert itself into cultural moments and ephemera, from animation memes to superhero-movie discourse. More and more regular people are vigilant about the way pop culture can be used to push political messages. But it can be difficult to know what does and doesn’t deserve our energy and cultural attention.

Still, it’s hard not to feel like we’ve all been effectively “got” by a brand that most of us haven’t thought about since high school, one that has not sparked this much fervent discussion in its entire existence. But even American Eagle might not have put as much thought into the ads as its critics did. Peter Bray, founder and executive creative director at advertising agency Bray & Co, says the American Eagle ad may be more innocent than we assume, the result of a “first thought” concept as opposed to anything intentionally controversial.

“I don’t think in any way this was their intent,” Bray says. “They thought they had a lightbulb moment of creativity and didn’t think about the bigger cultural picture.”

Whether or not it meant it, American Eagle illuminated a winning engagement strategy for the second Trump era: Flirt with the public’s fear (or excitement) about fascism — with the help of Sydney Sweeney.

Changpeng Zhao’s Giggle Academy & American Legion Launches $2 Million Blockchain Scholarship for Military Families https://earlybirdsinvest.com/changpeng-zhaos-giggle-academy-american-legion-launches-2-million-blockchain-scholarship-for-military-families/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/changpeng-zhaos-giggle-academy-american-legion-launches-2-million-blockchain-scholarship-for-military-families/#respond Sun, 27 Jul 2025 02:07:19 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/changpeng-zhaos-giggle-academy-american-legion-launches-2-million-blockchain-scholarship-for-military-families/

Giggle Academy and American Legion Charities have announced a $2 million partnership to launch a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting American service members with collapsed disabilities through blockchain and AI education.

The program offers educational grants of up to $20,000 to military families, particularly disadvantaged students in services affected by death or disability in their duties. At the heart of this is the annual competition centered around practical blockchain and AI questions under the theme of “What’s broken and how do you fix it?”

Giggle Academy was founded in 2024 by Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of Tech Antrepreneur and Binance, offering an AI-powered education platform that is given free gaming that focuses on real-world work-rich skills such as emotional intelligence, finances, negotiations and technical literacy, without barriers to formal or expensive passage.

“I have chosen to start this scholarship program with children from US military families because I know what service these young people look like,” CZ said. “They have seen the costs up close, they have courage, discipline and often sadness, but they also have a culture of selfless leadership.

The initiative, which includes US 9/11 post military children and 750 million illiterate adults around the world, is aimed at addressing the long-standing educational gap, according to the announcement. American Legion has been supported by veterans for over a century and brings legacy and trust to this mission.

“Military families are sacrificed at the expense of serving, but often overlooked, especially when uniforms are removed,” American Legion said. “We are grateful that Giggle Academy has been joining us, giving life to our freedom and telling our children, ‘You will never forget.’ ”

The scholarship program links military children to next-generation learning tools and adaptation curriculum built for those facing the most challenging challenges of life.

“This partnership with Giggle Academy will help us to bring that commitment into the future, supplementing the old-fashioned service with cutting-edge access to education,” added American Legion. “Together, we are not only respecting sacrifices, we are not only building opportunities, we are one child at a time.”

Owning Bitcoin will replace home ownership as the American dream, former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao told his followers on social media this week.

Bitcoin Ownership Is The New American Dream, CZ Says

A June 26 X post from Zhao shows the crypto entrepreneur celebrating U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte’s decision to order both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to consider ways cryptocurrencies may be used in mortgage risk assessments.

“This is great to see, BTC count as assets for mortgage,” Zhao wrote in response to Pulte’s post.

“The current American Dream is to own a home,” Zhao continued. “The future American Dream will be to own 0.1 BTC, which will be more than the value of a house in the US.”

Issued on Wednesday, Pulte’s order will see the two government-sponsored enterprises prepare a proposal considering “cryptocurrency as an asset for reserves in their respective single-family mortgage loan risk assessments” without first being converted to U.S. dollars.

If approved, prospective homeowners would be able to use cryptocurrencies stored on any U.S.-regulated centralized exchange as part of their mortgage risk assessment without being converted to USD first.

“Today is a historic day in the cryptocurrency industry and the mortgage industry, whereby Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are now positioned to involve Cryptocurrencies in Mortgages,” Pulte said in a June 25 statement. “Thank you President Trump for making the USA the crypto capital of the world!”

Trump Talks Bitcoin

News of Zhao’s commentary comes as Bitcoin held steady around $107,000 on Friday.

During a White House press conference on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump praised the cryptocurrency, claiming that it “takes a lot of pressure off of the dollar” and is “a great thing for our country.”

“It’s become amazing,” Trump told reporters.

New US Banking Cartel Forming As JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Others Dominate American Deposits, Warns ‘Big Short’ Investor Steve Eisman https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-us-banking-cartel-forming-as-jpmorgan-wells-fargo-and-others-dominate-american-deposits-warns-big-short-investor-steve-eisman/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-us-banking-cartel-forming-as-jpmorgan-wells-fargo-and-others-dominate-american-deposits-warns-big-short-investor-steve-eisman/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:42:34 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/new-us-banking-cartel-forming-as-jpmorgan-wells-fargo-and-others-dominate-american-deposits-warns-big-short-investor-steve-eisman/

Legendary investor Steve Eisman is warning the public about the possible emergence of a “cartel” of major banks in the US, which he says could impact the cost of financial services.

The Wall Street veteran notes in a new interview with The Compound that there hasn’t been a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the banking sector since the 1990s.

“It’s been very much discouraged post Dodd-Frank, so you’ve had very, very little M&A. But I actually think as a country we need [a wave of M&A]. And the reason why I say that is here’s an interesting statistic: in 2007, JPMorgan’s share of deposits in the United States was 7%, today it’s close to 14%.

Now, there are a couple of reasons for that: number one is the cost of regulation is very, very high, and they can bear that more easily, and number two, which is probably even more important, is the cost of technology has exploded, and you need to be really big so you can pay for it.

So if we do nothing and we keep the current policies and there’s no M&A wave, what’s going to happen is JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and a handful of others will continue to take market share, the other regional banks are going to wither on the vine, and what you’ll have left is a couple of very, very large banks and some community banks.”

Eisman, whose bet against the housing market was famously profiled in parts of Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short,” says financial institutions like US Bank and Comerica should merge to compete with the giant firms.

“I don’t want to be Canada, where it’s basically a cartel, and so therefore those banks get to charge a lot more to customers.”

Banking giant Goldman Sachs says that US households will continue to pump money into the stock market this year, remaining the main buyer of equities.

In a note seen by Bloomberg, Goldman analysts led by David Kostin say they expect American households to directly purchase $425 billion worth of US equities this year.

In doing so, households would trail only corporations, which the bank predicts will buy $675 billion, as the top sources of stock demand.

Goldman partially bases the forecast on the concept that “there is no alternative” (TINA) to US markets.

“TINA trade remains alive and well in US retirement accounts.”

A separate group of Goldman analysts says that during the “liberation day” stock crash in early April, US households aggressively bought the dip, but have since turned into net sellers. However, that selling pressure has been offset by new institutional demand, according to the bank.

“The resilience of household demand for equities is vital because households represent the largest ownership category of the US equity market… Households directly own 38% of the US equity market and control an even larger share including indirect ownership through funds.”

The analysts added that Americans, on average, allocate 49% of their total financial assets to equities, which is the highest level on record and just above the previous high of 48% set in 2020. In comparison, people in the euro area only allocate 10% of their total assets to stocks, and just 13% in Japan.
