Reports say Webus International made a deal with Air China that could put its Wetour travel service in front of more than 60 million PhoenixMiles loyalty members. The plan may add XRP payments to Wetour’s overseas platform. But it’s not automatic. The change depends on future business steps and getting regulatory approval.

Access For 60 Million Members

Under the deal, Wetour will focus first on premium chauffeur and airport transfer services. PhoenixMiles members could get access to Wetour’s platform, which now shows XRP as a payment option and also accepts Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin.

Webus has also moved to use more altcoins. In June it filed with the SEC for a $300 million treasury reserve and said it plans to use the XRP Ledger for cross-border payments.

XRP: Real Use & Limits

Fans say the XRPL settles transactions in three to five seconds and fees are under one cent. Those features are why travel companies and loyalty programs might try the tech for vouchers, token rewards, and fast payments.

But XRP payment support doesn’t always mean people will use the token for daily purchases. Attorney Bill Morgan notes the cautious wording, but he thinks it shows real progress. He said, “For me, it shows adoption of XRP.”

Big Number Vs. Actual Use Case

Sixty million is a big headline. It gets attention. But access is not the same as active use. Many loyalty programs have members who rarely travel or never use partner services.

Wetour’s focus on higher-end transport and promo coupons means early use might only be by some members, not all 60 million. That can still matter. Pilot programs usually start small and grow if people use them.

Rules & Business Checks

The announcement says the integration depends on future business steps and regulatory sign-off. That matters now because payments and loyalty schemes touch local rules, cross-border compliance, and payment systems. A wide rollout will need those issues cleared, and it could take time.

This is a notable step for XRP in travel and loyalty programs, but it’s early and conditional. Webus’ earlier moves — the planned $300 million treasury and XRPL plans — make the idea more believable than a one-time press claim.

In a recent US military exercise, fighter jet crews received in-flight directions from an artificial intelligence (AI) system instead of relying solely on human support.

According to an August 26 report by Fox News, the trial was organized by both the US Air Force and Navy. They used a system called Starsage, built by Raft AI, during joint tests involving F-16, F/A-18, and F-35 fighter jets.

This exercise focused on testing how AI could help manage weapons, communications, and mission planning.

Traditionally, pilots are guided by air battle managers who stay on the ground and keep track of radar feeds, intelligence updates, and aircraft positioning. These managers act like air traffic controllers, but in a military setting.

Raft AI’s Starsage system takes that same role but gives each pilot their own dedicated AI assistant.

Raft AI’s CEO, Shubhi Mishra, described the system as a one-on-one tool that offers faster and more accurate support than current methods. She said pilots can now receive tailored information in seconds, rather than waiting minutes.

According to Mishra, Starsage improves decision-making by processing mission data and reacting without delays.

During the test, pilots confirmed their readiness with Starsage, which then checked that the required aircraft were airborne and prepared for the mission. The AI cross-referenced the information with simulated radar feeds and mission objectives.

Once everything matched, the system notified higher command units through digital updates, which reduced the need for constant radio calls.

Bitcoin (BTC) is consolidating in a thin-liquidity “air gap” between $110,000 and $116,000 as the market waits for new demand to establish a firm base.

According to an Aug. 6 report by Glassnode, BTC’s price pulled back to $113,000 after setting a new all-time high above $123,000 in mid-July. This price movement left many recent buyers underwater and created a supply cluster with a cost basis above $116,000. 

The lower bound of that cluster repeatedly supported rebounds until July 31, when BTC broke lower into the air gap. Historically, such low-liquidity ranges can morph into accumulation zones as buyers step in at a perceived discount.

The report compared entity-adjusted URPD snapshots from July 31 and Aug. 4 to gauge dip-buying.

Following a rebound from around $112,000, investors acquired roughly 120,000 BTC and lifted spot prices back above $114,000, evidencing opportunistic demand. 

Even so, the $110,000-$116,000 band remains light in aggregate supply. Time spent accumulating here could potentially build a platform for the next move higher.

New resistance, metrics not overheated

The rally has yet to reclaim the cost basis of holders with amounts of one week and one month old, now with a decisive resistance near $116,900. A sustained break above would signal demand regaining control, while a failure raises the risk of a deeper test of the previous all-time high range around $110,000.

According to the report, price sits in a “warm” but not overheated regime and remains above the short-term holder (STH) cost basis at $106,000. This price level is a threshold that has historically divided near-term bullish and bearish phases in Bitcoin bull markets.

STH supply in profit has slipped from 100% to 70% during the drawdown, consistent with the midline of prior bull cycles. The share of STH spent volume in profit has cooled to 45%, below neutral, implying a balanced market with neither side dominant.

ETF flows and leverage

On Aug. 5, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the US saw a 1,500 BTC outflow, the largest bout of ETF sell-side pressure since April 2025. Historically, these episodes have been brief, but monitoring persistence is key. 

In derivatives, perpetual funding rates have slipped back below 0.1%, a neutral zone that indicates cooling speculative appetite and tempered upside conviction in the near term.

Taken together, Bitcoin appears locked in the $110,000-$116,000 corridor, accumulating supply and waiting for demand sufficient to retake $116,900 and reassert the uptrend.

A data center in South Memphis, built by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) company xAI, is facing legal action over how it uses power.

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) sent the company a 60-day warning letter on June 17, which stated that xAI may be sued for breaking the Clean Air Act.

The complaint focuses on the use of gas turbines at the “Colossus” site, which were set up before the facility was connected to the main electricity grid.

The SELC filed the notice on behalf of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). They said xAI installed dozens of gas-powered turbines without getting the required air permits.

According to the NAACP, the turbines are releasing pollutants like nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde into the air.

The notice stated that xAI has run at least 35 turbines and other equipment that create air pollution. It also claims that the company did not use the best available tools to limit these emissions, which is required for large polluters under federal law.

The Colossus site is located near Boxtown, a mostly Black neighborhood already affected by poor air from nearby industries. The NAACP has called this an example of environmental racism and stated that it plans to continue pushing back.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI is facing legal action over air pollution from the gas-fired turbines it uses to power its Memphis computer farm. 

Musk’s AI firm xAI received a 60-day notice of intent to sue for violations of the Clean Air Act on Tuesday from the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) over its “Colossus” AI datacenter in Memphis, Tennessee.

The potential lawsuit, on behalf of the oldest civil rights group in America, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, centers on dozens of natural gas turbines that the firm installed to power the facility instead of waiting for a grid connection.

According to SELC, these turbines are operating without proper air quality permits and are emitting harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde, violating the Clean Air Act.

“Over the past year, xAI has installed and operated at least 35 combustion turbines and other sources of air pollution at the Colossus site without ever obtaining the necessary preconstruction or operating air permits,” the notice reads.

Formal requests ignored

The notice also claimed that xAI failed to implement “Best Available Control Technology,” such as selective catalytic reduction to limit emissions, another Clean Air Act requirement for major sources.

“We have on four different occasions sent formal requests to the local health department asking for them to use their authority to enforce the law,” SELC senior attorney Patrick Anderson told Newsweek, adding, “Obviously, that hasn’t happened.”

Bad air quality lingers, civil rights group says

The Colossus datacenter is located at a former electronic manufacturing facility in South Memphis near a predominantly Black community called Boxtown, where air quality in the area is already diminished by other industrial emissions.

The civil rights organization seeks injunctive relief, civil penalties, fees, and litigation costs. 

Cointelegraph contacted xAI and the NAACP for further comments but did not receive an immediate response. 

Data center demand surging

Musk’s xAI is building a second, larger facility called Colossus 2 in Memphis, requiring at least 1 gigawatt of power.

Data center demand is rapidly increasing, driven largely by the growth of cloud computing and AI, with the US Department of Energy projecting that it could double or triple by 2028. 

By 2030, data centers will need $6.7 trillion in global investments to meet the surging demand, research firm McKinsey reported in May.

“AI’s record-shattering demand is finding limitations in the supply of data centers and electricity as AI companies struggle to reach profitability amid mounting costs. Institutions estimate AI will drive a 165% increase in the demand for data centers by 2030,” Nick Ruck, director at LVRG Research, told Cointelegraph.

Amazon recently signed a deal with Talen Energy for nuclear energy to power its AI data centers in Pennsylvania through the year 2042. It also signalled plans to invest more than $13 billion in Australia’s AI and cloud infrastructure.

Air travel is such a common part of modern life that it’s easy to forget all the miraculous technology and communication infrastructure required to do it safely. But recent crashes, including near Washington, DC, and in San Diego — not to mention multiple near misses — have left many fliers wondering: Is it still safe to fly?

That concern is particularly acute at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, which has recently experienced several frightening incidents and near misses in as radio and radar systems have gone dark. This has left an under-staffed and overworked group of air traffic controllers to manage a system moving at a frenetic pace with no room for error.

Andrew Tangel, an aviation reporter for the Wall Street Journal, recently spoke to Jonathan Stewart, a Newark air traffic controller. In early May, Stewart experienced a brief loss of the systems showing him the locations of the many planes was directing. When the systems came back online, he realized there’d almost been a major crash.

According to Tangel, Stewart “sent off a fiery memo to his managers, complaining about how he was put in that situation, which he felt he was being set up for failure.” Stewart now is taking trauma leave because of the stresses of the job. After many delayed flights, United Airlines just announced that it will move some of its flights to nearby John F. Kennedy International Airport.

To understand how we arrived at our current aviation crisis, Today, Explained co-host Sean Rameswaram spoke with Darryl Campbell, an aviation safety writer for The Verge.

You recently wrote about all these issues with flying for The Verge — and your take was that this isn’t just a Newark, New Jersey, problem. It’s systemic. Why?

You’ve probably seen some of the news articles about it, and it’s really only in the last couple months because everybody’s been paying attention to aviation safety that people are really saying, Oh my gosh!

Newark airport is losing the ability to see airplanes. They’re losing radar for minutes at a time, and that’s not something you want to hear when you have airplanes flying towards each other at 300 miles an hour. So it is rightfully very concerning. But the thing is, what’s been happening at Newark has actually been happening for almost a decade and a half in fits and starts. It’ll get really bad, and then it’ll get better again.

Now we’re seeing a combination of air traffic control problems; we’re seeing a combination of infrastructure problems, and they’ve got a runway that’s entirely shut down. And the way that I think about it is, while Newark is its own special case today, all of the problems that it’s facing, other than the runway, are problems that every single airport in the entire country is going to be facing over the next five to 10 years, and so we’re really getting a preview of what’s going to happen if we don’t see some drastic change in the way that the air traffic control system is maintained.

We heard about some of these issues after the crash at DCA outside Washington. What exactly is going on with air traffic controllers?

The first problem is just one of staff retention and training. On the one hand, the air traffic control system and the people who work there are a pretty dedicated bunch, but it takes a long time to get to the point where you’re actually entrusted with airplanes. It can be up to four years of training from the moment that you decide, Okay, I want to be an air traffic controller.

Couple that with the fact that these are government employees and like many other agencies, they haven’t really gotten the cost-of-living increases to keep pace with the actual cost of living, especially in places like the New York and New Jersey area, where it’s just gone up way faster than in the rest of the country.

This is bad at Newark, but you say it promises to get bad everywhere else too.

The cost of living is still outpacing the replacement level at a lot of these air traffic control centers. And the washout rate is pretty high. We’ve seen the average staffing level at a lot of American airports get down below 85, 80 percent, which is really where the FAA wants it to be, and it’s getting worse over time.

At Newark in particular, it’s down to about 58 percent as of the first quarter of this year. This is an emergency level of staffing at a baseline. And then on top of that, you have — in order to keep the airplanes going — people working mandatory overtime, mandatory six-days-a-week shifts, and that’s accelerating that burnout that naturally happens. There’s a lot of compression and a lot of bad things happening independently, but all at the same time in that kind of labor system that’s really making it difficult to both hire and retain qualified air traffic controllers.

These sound like very fixable problems, Darryl. Are we trying to fix them? I know former reality TV star and Fox News correspondent — and transportation secretary, in this day and age — Sean Duffy has been out to Newark. He said this: “What we are going to do when we get the money. We have the plan. We actually have to build a brand new state-of-the-art, air traffic control system.”

To his credit, they have announced some improvements on it. They’ve announced a lot of new funding for the FAA. They’ve announced an acceleration of hiring, but it’s just a short-term fix.

To put it in context, the FAA’s budget usually allocates about $1.7 billion in maintenance fees every year. And so they’ve announced a couple billion more dollars, but their backlog already is $5.2 billion in maintenance. And these are things like replacing outdated systems, replacing buildings that are housing some of these radars, things that you really need to just get the system to where it should be operating today, let alone get ahead of the maintenance things that are going to happen over the next couple of years. It’s really this fight between the FAA and Congress to say, We’re going to do a lot today to fix these problems.

And it works for a little while, but then three years down the road, the same problems are still occurring. You got that one-time shot of new money, but then the government cuts back again and again and again. And then you’re just putting out one fire, but not addressing the root cause of why there’s all this dry powder everywhere.

People are canceling their flights into or out of Newark, but there are also all these smaller accidents we’re seeing, most recently in San Diego, where six people were killed when a Cessna crashed. How should people be feeling about that?

There’s really no silver bullet and all the choices are not great to actively bad at baseline. Number one is you get the government to pay what it actually costs to run the air traffic control system. That empirically has not happened for decades, so I don’t know that we’re going to get to do it, especially under this administration, which is focused on cutting costs.

The second thing is to pass on fees to fliers themselves. And it’s just like the conversation that Walmart’s having with tariffs — they don’t want to do it. When they try to pass it on to the customer, President Trump yells at them, and it’s just not a great situation.

The third option is to reduce the number of flights in the sky. Part of this is that airlines are competing to have the most flights, the most convenient schedules, the most options. That’s led to this logjam at places like Newark, where you really have these constraints on it. Right before all of this stuff happens, Newark was serving about 80 airplanes an hour, so 80 landings and takeoffs. Today, the FAA’s actually started to admit restrictions on it, and now it’s closer to 56 flights an hour, and that’s probably the level that it can actually handle and not have these issues where you have planes in danger.

But no airline wants to hear, Hey, you have to cut your flight schedule. We saw that with United: Their CEO was saying that the air traffic controllers who took trauma leave had “walked off the job,” which seemed to suggest that he didn’t think they should be taking trauma leave because you have to have more planes coming in. That’s a competitive disadvantage for him, but you also have to balance safety. It’s difficult to understand. It costs a lot of money to fix. This is your textbook “why governments fail” case study and it’s not really reassuring that in 24 hours I’m going to be in the middle of it again, trying to fly out of Newark.
