Meta has invested $14.3 billion into Scale AI, a company that provides labeled data used to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

This deal, announced on June 12, gives Meta a 49% ownership stake in Scale AI and values the company at more than $29 billion.

Rather than buying the company outright, Meta chose to become a large minority investor, which helps Scale AI remain independent and may reduce the risk of increased scrutiny from regulators.

Scale AI works by hiring people, many of them based outside the US, to tag and sort data that trains AI systems. Its clients include tech companies like Google and OpenAI. These data-labeling tasks help AI models learn how to understand and respond to the world.

Meta has said the partnership will strengthen its own efforts to build better AI by improving how it produces and uses this kind of training data.

Alexandr Wang, the 27-year-old founder of Scale AI, shared in a June 13 post on X that he will step down from his CEO role to launch a new research group within Meta focused on developing “superintelligence”, or artificial general intelligence (AGI).

He will remain on Scale AI’s board of directors. In the meantime, the company’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Droege, will take over as interim CEO.

Wang told Scale employees that the investment was a major milestone for the company and a sign of how far their work has come.

Mattel, the company behind brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels, recently announced a partnership with OpenAI. What is the goal of the collaboration? Read the full story.

Most AI experts say chasing AGI with more compute is a losing strategy https://earlybirdsinvest.com/most-ai-experts-say-chasing-agi-with-more-compute-is-a-losing-strategy/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/most-ai-experts-say-chasing-agi-with-more-compute-is-a-losing-strategy/#respond Sun, 23 Mar 2025 18:09:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/most-ai-experts-say-chasing-agi-with-more-compute-is-a-losing-strategy/

Why it matters: Major tech players have spent the last few years betting that simply throwing more computing power at AI will lead to artificial general intelligence (AGI) – systems that match or surpass human cognition. But a recent survey of AI researchers suggests growing skepticism that endlessly scaling up current approaches is the right path forward.

A recent survey of 475 AI researchers reveals that 76% believe adding more computing power and data to current AI models is “unlikely” or “very unlikely” to lead to AGI.

The survey, conducted by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), reveals a growing skepticism. Despite billions poured into building massive data centers and training ever-larger generative models, researchers argue that the returns on these investments are diminishing.

Stuart Russell, a computer scientist at UC Berkeley and a contributor to the report, told New Scientist: “The vast investments in scaling, unaccompanied by any comparable efforts to understand what was going on, always seemed to me to be misplaced.”

The numbers tell the story. Last year alone, venture capital funding for generative AI reportedly topped $56 billion, according to a TechCrunch report. The push has also led to massive demand for AI accelerators, with a February report stating that the semiconductor industry reached a whopping $626 billion in 2024.

Running these models has always required massive amounts of energy, and as they’re scaled up, the demands have only risen. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are therefore securing nuclear power deals to fuel their data centers.

Yet, despite these colossal investments, the performance of cutting-edge AI models has plateaued. For instance, many experts have suggested that OpenAI’s latest models have shown only marginal improvements over their predecessor.

Beyond the skepticism, the survey also highlights a shift in priorities among AI researchers. While 77% prioritize designing AI systems with an acceptable risk-benefit profile, only 23% are focused on directly pursuing AGI. Additionally, 82% of respondents believe that if AGI is developed by private entities, it should be publicly owned to mitigate global risks and ethical concerns. However, 70% oppose halting AGI research until full safety mechanisms are in place, suggesting a cautious but forward-moving approach.

Cheaper, more efficient alternatives to scaling are being explored. OpenAI has experimented with “test-time compute,” where AI models spend more time “thinking” before generating responses. This method has yielded performance boosts without the need for massive scaling. Unfortunately, Arvind Narayanan, a computer scientist at Princeton University, told New Scientist that this approach is “unlikely to be a silver bullet.”

On the flip side, tech leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai remain optimistic, asserting that the industry can “just keep scaling up” – even as he hinted that the era of low-hanging fruit with AI gains was over.

Cardano’s Charles Hoskinson sees AGI on the horizon in three to five years https://earlybirdsinvest.com/cardanos-charles-hoskinson-sees-agi-on-the-horizon-in-three-to-five-years/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/cardanos-charles-hoskinson-sees-agi-on-the-horizon-in-three-to-five-years/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2025 13:25:23 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/cardanos-charles-hoskinson-sees-agi-on-the-horizon-in-three-to-five-years/

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson believes Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could emerge within three to five years, marking a transformative moment in AI evolution.

In a Feb. 19 post on X, Hoskinson said:

“I’d say we are 3-5 years away from AGI.”

AGI represents a significant leap in AI evolution. Unlike current models, AGI would possess human-like intelligence, allowing it to learn and perform tasks without specific programming. This breakthrough could redefine industries and everyday life.

Hoskinson’s statement comes as tech companies race to build stronger AI models. Over the past years, industry leaders have poured billions into research and development of more powerful AI systems that could reshape industries.

Considering this, Hoskinson believes this rapid progress is a sign that AGI is approaching. He pointed to upcoming advancements in AI, such as Grok 3, Llama 4, Claude’s next version, and OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, as evidence of this accelerating trend.

He emphasized that these releases would significantly expand AI’s capabilities and real-world applications.

Hoskinson said:

“Grok 3 is coming out tonight. Soon Llama 4, Claude’s next release, and Open AI GPT-4.5 and 5. All of these are massive leaps forward in AI and will dramatically improve the use and utility of AI for practical applications.”

Is AGI near?

The Cardano founder is not alone in his views on AGI. Several industry experts have pointed out that AI development is accelerating thanks to breakthroughs like DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model.

Venture capitalist Nic Carter recently suggested that DeepSeek has advanced AGI’s arrival by five years.

Moreover, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has also expressed confidence in AGI’s imminent arrival. Earlier this year, he stated that his team understands the path to achieving it and predicted that AGI-driven agents could start appearing in workplaces by late 2025.

More recently, Altman hinted that GPT-4.5 could offer a “feel the AGI” experience, suggesting a significant leap in AI capabilities.
