Authorities across Africa arrested more than 1,200 suspects and seized nearly $100 million in a sweeping cybercrime operation that dismantled online fraud networks and illegal crypto mining operations, INTERPOL announced on Aug. 22.

The three-month crackdown, known as Operation Serengeti 2.0, targeted nearly 88,000 victims across 18 African nations in collaboration with the UK.

Investigators uncovered 11,432 malicious infrastructures tied to ransomware, business email compromise schemes, and online investment fraud.

    Major seizures and arrests

In Angola, police shut down 25 crypto mining centers operated by 60 Chinese nationals who were illegally validating blockchain transactions. Authorities also confiscated 45 illicit power stations used to fuel the operation, as well as mining and IT equipment valued at more than $37 million.

Officials said the seized power assets will be redirected to bolster the electricity supply in vulnerable areas.

Meanwhile, Zambian authorities dismantled one of the region’s largest online investment fraud schemes, where scammers persuaded more than 65,000 people to invest in crypto platforms with promises of high returns.

Losses were estimated at $300 million. Police arrested 15 suspects, seized forged documents, and shut down bank accounts tied to the scheme.

In a separate raid, officers and immigration officials disrupted a human trafficking ring and confiscated 372 counterfeit passports.

Meanwhile, in Côte d’Ivoire, investigators dismantled a transnational inheritance scam traced back to Germany. Victims were tricked into paying upfront fees to claim fabricated estates. Authorities arrested the lead suspect and seized cash, electronics, vehicles and jewelry, estimating losses at $1.6 million.

    Training, prevention and international support

The crackdown followed months of intelligence sharing between INTERPOL and private-sector partners, who provided data on suspicious domains, IP addresses, and command-and-control servers.

Ahead of the operation, officers underwent training workshops on crypto tracking, open-source intelligence, and ransomware analysis. INTERPOL officials said the operation reflects a growing global push to tackle cybercrime through coordinated enforcement and prevention.

A new partnership with the International Cyber Offender Prevention Network, involving 36 countries, aims to identify threats before they escalate into criminal activity.

Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, the effort brought together operational partners including Group-IB, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, TRM Labs, and Fortinet.

Authorities said more investigations are underway, particularly into the international financial and criminal networks behind the fraud schemes.

Binance introduces stricter compliance measures for South African users https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/#respond Wed, 23 Apr 2025 16:39:18 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binance-introduces-stricter-compliance-measures-for-south-african-users/

Binance is implementing new compliance measures for users in South Africa, effective April 30.

According to an April 23 statement, the changes will require all its South African users to provide detailed information about the sender and receiver of any crypto transfer on the platform.

The firm added that users initiating withdrawals must enter the recipient’s full name, country of residence, and, if applicable, the name of their crypto exchange.

Binance users must verify the sender’s details for incoming deposits. This process involves checking the deposit page for any pending transactions, after which a prompt will request the sender’s full name, country, and exchange of origin if relevant.

The exchange stated that a failure to provide accurate information may result in the transaction being blocked or returned to the original sender.

Binance said the update is part of its effort to align more closely with South African regulatory expectations and ensure uninterrupted service within the region.

    Binance’s global compliance efforts

The move in South Africa is part of Binance’s broader effort to reinforce regulatory compliance across its global operations.

Last week, the exchange launched a re-verification process in India to strengthen user identification and meet national anti-money laundering (AML) standards.

The new KYC process in India applies to both current and new users. It requires them to submit official documents, including their Permanent Account Number (PAN).

    According to the exchange:

“This is as per the Indian anti-money laundering (AML) laws and these requirements equally apply to all exchanges in India.”

This comes in response to regulatory actions against Binance in 2024, when India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) issued a $2.2 million penalty for AML violations and ordered the Binance app removed from the Apple App Store.

Since then, Binance has registered with the FIU and resumed efforts to bring its operations in India back in line with legal requirements.

Does this new cryptography trigger growth in Nigeria?

Naturally, South Africa is the continent’s most sophisticated crypto market. This is primarily due to the merchant’s crypto payment skills. Meanwhile, Kenya will be holding the next edition of the Depin Network Annual Crypto event. On the western side of the continent, Nigeria ultimately enacted a legal framework that corresponded to encryption as part of the securities framework.

Let’s explore these stories in detail.

Kenya Crypto News: Depin Event Set for Mombasa and Zanzibar

The Global Crypto organization has announced that it will be holding its annual African event in Mombasa, Kenya, a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DEPIN). The event focuses on decentralized infrastructure, blockchain solutions, and sustainability.

Depin will hold an event from July 2nd to 5th, with the first day following Zanzibar Island off the coast of Tanzania in Mombasa, Kenya. The summit is sought to bring together industry leaders, innovators and policymakers to transform blockchain development on the continent. Second, this will help you concentrate your capital on some of the best cryptos to buy in 2025.

Organizations such as EV3, Share, and ThreeFold are important in holding summits. The event features several notable speakers from these organizations onwards, all of whom contribute to the overall success.

South African Crypto News: Leader in Merchant Crypto Recruitment

South Africa is one of the world’s top crypto markets.

The survey confirmed it is the top ranked African market for merchant crypto payments. This indicator is important as many institutional level players employ crypto as their payment system, as it shows the relative maturity of the South African market.

In this country, around 584 merchants’ locations accept crypto payments and place their heads and shoulders above other markets on the continent. In particular, South Africa ranks sixth in the world, only tracking the US, Brazil, the Czech Republic, El Salvador and Italy.

Countries like Kenya and Nigeria rely heavily on the use of peer-to-peer cryptography, and their citizens are actively involved in some of the hottest pre-sales. However, South Africa shows a decent level of integration between the crypto and the business sector.

If Crypto is to truly challenge Fiat and replace it as a medium of exchange, then such a widespread acceptance of merchants is necessary for growth.

Nigeria’s Crypto News: New Securities Law – What You Need to Know

Last week, Nigerian President Bora Tinubu signed the Investment and Securities Act, which allows virtual assets and investment contracts to be domestic securities. This development will help ease some of the uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s cryptography after a year of upheaval.

The law is prominent for countries where central banks direct financial institutions in 2021 and halt crypto transactions. Nigeria also collided with this year’s headlines as Binance executives were arrested as part of the exchange crackdown, and ultimately Binance temporarily evicted the market.

The law aims to create a more specific environment for investors, while enhancing issuer transparency and compliance with global standards. Crypto stakeholders are looking at development carefully, hoping that this will ultimately be a turning point for the crypto industry in the country, which has a love-hate relationship with the Nigerian government.

Ripple Labs has announced a new partnership with the prominent fintech company Chipper Cash to streamline cross-border payments on the African continent. The agreement, disclosed today through an official press release, involves the integration of Ripple’s crypto-enabled payments technology into Chipper Cash’s platform—a collaboration that both parties believe will enhance the speed, cost-efficiency, and reliability of transactions within and into Africa.

Ripple Teams Up With Chipper Cash

According to the press release, Chipper Cash will utilize Ripple Payments, leveraging digital assets to offer users round-the-clock access to incoming funds at a lower cost than current legacy options. As a result, consumers across Chipper Cash’s footprint—spanning nine countries in Africa—are expected to benefit from significantly reduced friction when receiving money from virtually anywhere in the world.

“Our partnership with Chipper Cash marks a key milestone in the expansion of Ripple’s business in Africa. Consumers and businesses across the continent are increasingly recognizing the potential of blockchain technology, and we are excited to bring our crypto-enabled payments solution to our partners in the region,” said Reece Merrick, Managing Director, Middle East and Africa, at Ripple.

By integrating our technology into Chipper Cash’s platform, we’re enabling faster, more affordable cross-border payments while driving economic growth and innovation across the markets they serve. […] As the global cross-border payments market grows, more institutions like Chipper Cash are tapping into the transformative power of blockchain technology to drive efficiency and innovation,” the Ripple exec added.

“Crypto-enabled payments have the potential to enable greater financial inclusion, accelerate access to global markets, and empower businesses and individuals across Africa,” said Ham Serunjogi, Co-Founder & CEO at Chipper Cash, adding “through integrating with Ripple’s global payments network, we are excited to be able to harness the transformative potential of blockchain technology to enable consumers to receive payments faster and at lower cost.”

The collaboration builds on Ripple’s existing footprint in the region, which began with a partnership with Onafriq in 2023. Through these efforts, Ripple has solidified its reputation as a provider of digital asset infrastructure for financial institutions worldwide. According to the company, Ripple Payments now reaches 90+ payout markets, covering more than 90% of daily foreign exchange markets and processing over $70 billion in volume.

Chipper Cash, launched in 2018, has seen significant growth in user adoption and funding. According to its latest data, the company now serves millions of customers across Africa and beyond. Publicly released figures also show that Chipper Cash completed a $150 million Series C round in November 2021, led by FTX, pushing the startup’s valuation to around $2 billion and bringing its total capital raised to $305 million.

With nearly 300 employees distributed across a global network of offices, Chipper Cash’s headquarters remain in San Francisco, with key presences in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, the UK, South Africa, Australia, Colombia, Tanzania, and Canada.
