A massive data breach at a company connected to the grocery retail giant Ahold Delhaize USA impacted more than 2.2 million victims.

The breach targeted Ahold Delhaize USA Services, LLC, a firm that provides support services to Ahold Delhaize USA, one of the largest grocery retail groups on the East Coast.

Stolen data from the breach varied on a person-to-person basis but included names, contact details, birthdates, Social Security numbers, passport and driver’s license numbers, financial account records, workers’ compensation details, medical records in employment histories and other employment-related records, per a notification on the Maine Attorney General’s website.

“We detected a cybersecurity issue involving unauthorized access to some of our internal US business systems on November 6th, 2024. We immediately launched an investigation with the assistance of leading external cybersecurity experts, coordinated with US federal law enforcement and began taking steps to contain the issue.

Based on our investigation, we identified that an unauthorized third party obtained certain files from one of our internal US file repositories between November 5th and 6th, 2024.”

Ahold Delhaize USA Services says it is currently notifying impacted victims and offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services for two years.

Ahold Delhaize USA is the American division of a large global retailer, and its domestic corporate umbrella includes the grocery brands Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.

Sequoia Partner Caught in Coinbase Data Breach, More VCs May Be Affected https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sequoia-partner-caught-in-coinbase-data-breach-more-vcs-may-be-affected/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sequoia-partner-caught-in-coinbase-data-breach-more-vcs-may-be-affected/#respond Sat, 17 May 2025 14:42:45 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sequoia-partner-caught-in-coinbase-data-breach-more-vcs-may-be-affected/ A partner at one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent venture firms has reportedly been caught in the fallout of Coinbase’s recent data breach, raising concerns that other high-profile investors may also be at risk.

According to a May 16 report from Bloomberg, Roelof Botha, Managing Partner at Sequoia Capital, was among the victims whose personal information was compromised.

The breach, which targeted Coinbase users through a social engineering campaign, allegedly stemmed from a bribery scheme involving customer service agents contracted by the exchange.

Botha Manages Assets Worth Hundreds of Millions

While Botha’s personal holdings remain undisclosed, he is believed to manage assets worth hundreds of millions.

Coinbase confirmed the incident in a May 15 blog post, stating that cybercriminals had gained access to customer data by exploiting internal support systems.

The attackers reportedly demanded a $20 million ransom, which Coinbase refused. The full scope of the breach remains unclear.

Security teams at Kraken and Binance are also investigating similar intrusion attempts, Bloomberg reported, although neither exchange has publicly confirmed exposure.

Philip Martin, Coinbase’s Chief Security Officer, revealed that the compromised support staff were based in India and have since been terminated.

The company has filed a disclosure with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, estimating remediation costs between $180 million and $400 million.

The breach hit Coinbase’s stock hard, with shares (COIN) dropping over 7% to $244 before recovering slightly to $264.24.

Meanwhile, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong was seen in Washington, D.C., engaging with lawmakers as Congress debates two key pieces of crypto legislation — one on stablecoins and another on digital asset market structure.

The breach comes at a critical moment for the crypto industry’s regulatory outlook and could influence legislative sentiment as the bills move toward a vote.

Coinbase Q1 Revenue Climbs, But Profit Falls 94%

Coinbase reported mixed first-quarter results, with revenue rising 24% year-over-year to $2 billion, but falling short of analyst expectations and down 10% from the previous quarter.

While transaction revenue grew to $1.26 billion, its subscription and services division—covering staking and custodial offerings—rose 37% to nearly $700 million, reflecting growing diversification beyond trading.

Despite the revenue uptick, net income plunged 94% to $66 million as the company marked down its crypto holdings amid market volatility.

Adjusted earnings stood at $526.6 million, or $1.94 per share, still below last year’s figure of $2.53. Operating expenses surged 51% to $1.3 billion due to aggressive marketing and asset write-downs.

Coinbase’s earnings were weighed down by unpredictable macroeconomic conditions and fluctuations in digital asset prices.

However, the company noted its second-highest ever monthly user count, with CFO Alesia Haas highlighting increased engagement across non-trading services.

413,032 Americans Affected As Major Data Breach Leaks Customer Names, Social Security Numbers, Financial Records and More https://earlybirdsinvest.com/413032-americans-affected-as-major-data-breach-leaks-customer-names-social-security-numbers-financial-records-and-more/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/413032-americans-affected-as-major-data-breach-leaks-customer-names-social-security-numbers-financial-records-and-more/#respond Sat, 10 May 2025 07:28:54 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/413032-americans-affected-as-major-data-breach-leaks-customer-names-social-security-numbers-financial-records-and-more/

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are now at risk of identity theft and fraud after a major data breach at a human resources firm.

In a new filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Maryland-based Kelly Benefits says it has discovered a significant cybersecurity incident impacting 413,032 people.

The company says an internal investigation revealed that an unknown entity gained unauthorized access to its database and stole sensitive customer information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, tax ID numbers, medical and health insurance records and financial account datasets.

“The investigation determined Kelly Benefits’ environment was subject to unauthorized access between December 12th, 2024 and December 17th, 2024 and certain files were copied and taken.

Kelly Benefits then began a time-intensive and detailed review of all files affected by this event to determine what information was present in the impacted files and to whom it related.

Once this review was complete, Kelly Benefits reviewed its internal records to match the individual to the appropriate client or carrier. This analysis was completed on March 3rd, 2025.”

Kelly Benefits offers a wide array of HR-related services, including benefits administration, payroll solutions, retirement planning, compliance support and consulting services.

The firm says it issued letters of notice to affected individuals while offering a 12-month credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.

For now, Kelly Benefits says it “has seen no evidence of misuse of any information related to this incident.”

The firm says it has reported the data breach to federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies and will continue closely monitoring its security policies, procedures and tools.

A billion-dollar bank is warning customers after a cybersecurity breach affecting thousands of customers.

In a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Western Alliance Bank says an unauthorized actor exploited a vulnerability in a third-party file transfer software system it uses.

The breach, which was discovered in late January and happened in October, impacts 21,899 customers, according to the filing.

“Western Alliance learned that an unauthorized actor had potentially accessed some of Western Alliance’s data on January 27, 2025. Our investigation determined that the unauthorized actor acquired certain files from the systems from October 12, 2024, to October 24, 2024…

On February 21, 2025, we determined that the files contained some of your personal information, including your name and Social Security number. The files may have also contained your date of birth, financial account number, driver’s license number, tax identification number, and/or passport, if you provided it to Western Alliance.”

The bank says it has informed law enforcement about the data breach and is offering customers a 12-month complimentary membership to an identity-theft protection service.

Western Alliance Bank currently has approximately $81 billion in total assets, according to the Federal Reserve.
