Cardano’s founder, Charles Hoskinson, has clarified why the blockchain platform was excluded from a prominent US government initiative meant to publish official economic data on public blockchains. Blockchain networks like Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, and Optimism made the cut; Cardano didn’t. Hoskinson revealed during a YouTube AMA that the reason wasn’t technical or regulatory, but it was grounded in economics. Specifically, he said the integration fee quoted by Oracle specialist Chainlink was absurd, which made Cardano’s participation really unfeasible.

Chainlink’s Absurd Fee

As one of the biggest blockchain ecosystems, Cardano’s inability to participate in the US government’s recent blockchain initiative to bring macroeconomic data onto the blockchain took many crypto participants by surprise. However, while speaking at a recent surprise AMA on his YouTube channel, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson says the reason boils down to money.

According to Hoskinson, the main reason was due to its pending partnership with Chainlink’s oracle integration, which is yet to be finalised because of the absurd fee charged by Chainlink. Hoskinson did not shy away from strong language: “They gave us an absurd number for integration. I said ‘f– it, we’ll handle it. We’ll figure it out,’” he said.

Despite the frustration, he tempered his critique with respect. He described Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov as “extremely smart” and “a very good businessman”, someone who “sees the future” and, in Hoskinson’s words, is “sitting on a golden egg”.

Chainlink’s oracle solutions are very important for connecting smart contracts to real-world data. As such, Hoskinson’s metaphor acknowledges Chainlink’s powerful position in the blockchain ecosystem.

How It Stalls Cardano’s DeFi Growth

Without a cost-effective oracle integration, Cardano’s decentralized finance landscape has struggled to keep pace with other blockchain ecosystems. To put this into perspective, Ethereum’s integration with Chainlink has allowed large inflows into its DeFi ecosystem, with about $13.4 billion in Total Value Locked (TVL) added from between August 2 ($78.222 billion) and August 31 ($91.595 billion), according to data from DeFiLlama.

Meanwhile, Cardano’s TVL broke below $400 million in August, and daily active addresses have also fallen massively. At the time of writing, Cardano’s TVL is sitting at $367.91 million. The result is a disconnect between Cardano’s on-chain activity and ADA’s price action, which witnessed a steady increase in August alongside the rest of the crypto market.

Nonetheless, Hoskinson is still optimistic. Talks with Chainlink are ongoing, and he’s determined to find common ground with Chainlink. He also revealed discussions with the team behind the USD1 stablecoin and hinted at potential collaboration with Aave, which he described as part of a bundle. If USD1 (already launched on Ethereum, BNB, and Tron) comes to Cardano, it could become the ecosystem’s largest stablecoin. Combine that with oracle access and lending support from Chainlink, and Cardano could strengthen its DeFi foundations significantly.

At the time of writing, Cardano is trading at $0.8307, up by 1.1% in the past 24 hours.

Vitalik Buterin Calls Charges Against Bitcoin OG Roger Ver ‘Absurd’ and Something To Stand Against https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vitalik-buterin-calls-charges-against-bitcoin-og-roger-ver-absurd-and-something-to-stand-against/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vitalik-buterin-calls-charges-against-bitcoin-og-roger-ver-absurd-and-something-to-stand-against/#respond Mon, 03 Mar 2025 14:23:54 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/vitalik-buterin-calls-charges-against-bitcoin-og-roger-ver-absurd-and-something-to-stand-against/

Ethereum (ETH) creator Vitalik Buterin says that the US government’s targeting of early Bitcoin (BTC) pioneer Roger Ver is an “absurd” and unreasonable persecution.

Ver, an early Bitcoin investor who later decided to support the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) fork, was arrested in Spain in late April of 2024 at the direction of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

He faces multiple charges, including mail fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns amounting to a maximum of 109 years in prison.

However, Buterin says the charges against Ver appear politically motivated and compares the case to that of Ross Ulbricht, who was sentenced to life in prison for creating the online marketplace The Silk Road before receiving a pardon from President Trump.

“Going to prison for the rest of your life over non-violent tax offenses is absurd. The case against Roger seems very politically motivated; like with Ross Ulbricht, there have been plenty of people and corporations who have been accused of far worse and yet faced sentences far milder than what Roger is facing.

The argument that the flashlight on him is motivated by things he said (namely, his advocacy of freedom and refusal to accept the legitimacy of coercive state power) seems compelling. This is worth standing against because selective prosecution for unrelated offenses is a common way of circumventing protections like the First Amendment (or in more authoritarian countries, even more basic things like the moral prohibition against punishing people for the crimes of their family members).”

Despite renouncing his United States citizenship in 2014 after obtaining citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis, authorities say Ver should have filed tax returns that reported capital gains from the sale of his worldwide assets, including his Bitcoin, and reported the fair market value of his assets.

Says Buterin,

“The US tax-by-citizenship and associated exit tax regime is extreme; the former is shared by almost no other countries in the world, and the latter is on the high end of what countries do (eg. UK only charges capital gains if you return within 5 years)…

Genuine good faith mistakes should be treated by giving the actor the opportunity to pay back taxes if needed with interest and penalties, not with prosecution.”

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin calls Roger Ver’s potential life sentence “absurd.” https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-co-founder-vitalik-buterin-calls-roger-vers-potential-life-sentence-absurd/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-co-founder-vitalik-buterin-calls-roger-vers-potential-life-sentence-absurd/#respond Sun, 02 Mar 2025 04:30:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereum-co-founder-vitalik-buterin-calls-roger-vers-potential-life-sentence-absurd/

Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin (BTC) investor, once known as “Bitcoin yes,” in support of cryptocurrency, was charged with tax fraud last year and could face life in prison.

Veterans from many industries are now coming to support him. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, calls the potential statement “absurd.”

“It’s ridiculous to go to jail for the rest of your life over non-violent tax violations,” Buterin said in a social media post. “The lawsuit against Roger appears to be very politically motivated. Like Ross Ulbricht, there were many people and businesses facing far more milder writing than Roger faces, but far worse writing.”

His words come after Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road. He was sentenced to life in prison for creating the Darknet Marketplace, and later forgiven by US President Donald Trump, showing support for Ver, saying “the rest of his life should not be spent in prison on taxes.”

Similarly, Kraken founder Jesse Powell discusses in Ver’s defense. “The reality is, they don’t like him, they want to get him.

Ver and his legal team are challenging the case, claiming that the charges against him are politically motivated.
