The trend of companies establishing crypto treasuries is gaining momentum, with Sharps Technology—a small player in the medical device and pharmaceutical sector—being the last to announce a plan to raise $400 million through a stock sale aimed at funding Solana (SOL) treasury.

New Solana Treasury In The Makings

The capital raise, which is set to close on August 28, will effectively transform Sharps’ stock into a proxy for the Solana price, attracting backing from crypto investment firms such as ParaFi, Pantera Capital, and CoinFund.

This infusion of over $400 million positions Sharps to potentially become the largest holder of Solana among publicly traded companies, surpassing its nearest competitor, Upexi, which holds approximately $394 million in the cryptocurrency.

To further strengthen its position in the crypto ecosystem, Sharps has appointed Alice Zhang, a venture capitalist and co-founder of the crypto smartphone maker Jambo, to its board as the new chief investment officer. James Zhang, another co-founder from Jambo, will serve as a strategic advisor.

Alice Zhang expressed confidence in the new team’s capabilities, stating, “We will have a team with deep ties to the Solana ecosystem and proven founder-level experience in scaling institutional digital asset platforms.”

However, Sharps’ frontrunner status in the Solana treasury market may be short-lived. Fortune reports that major crypto players, including Galaxy Digital, Multicoin Capital, and Jump Crypto, are in the process of raising $1 billion to launch their own Solana treasury company.

Strategy Expands Bitcoin Holdings

This investment into Sharps is part of a larger trend where small public companies are actively establishing digital asset treasuries, which are essentially pools of cryptocurrency held on their balance sheets.

This trend extends to the market’s largest altcoins, including XRP, Binance Coin (BNB), and The Open Network’s (TON) native token. This strategy has taken even higher relevance under the US’s leadership in creating a supportive framework for digital assets in the country.

In tandem with these developments, Strategy (previously MicroStrategy), the world’s largest corporate holder of Bitcoin (BTC), announced on Monday that it had acquired additional tokens, taking advantage of the current retrace.

Between August 18 and August 24, the Bitcoin proxy firm disclosed it purchased 3,081 Bitcoin for approximately $356.9 million, averaging around $115,829 per token.

Michael Saylor, the driving force behind Strategy’s crypto investments, revealed that the firm has achieved a Bitcoin yield of 25.4% year-to-date as of August 24, 2025. With 632,457 Bitcoins acquired for roughly $46.50 billion.

As of this writing, Solana lost the $200 level in line with the broader market correction that led the cryptocurrency to retrace nearly 5% in the 24-hour time frame. It now trades at $196, meaning a 32% gap from its $293 record high.

Trump Media & Technology Group Corp., the parent company of Truth Social, has announced plans to repurchase up to $400 million worth of its stock.

The move, confirmed in a press release on Monday, was approved by the company’s board of directors and will include the buyback of both common stock and warrants through open market transactions.

All repurchased shares will be retired, and the timing of the buyback will be left to the company’s discretion. Trump Media says the plan complies with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations.

With $3B War Chest, Trump Media Moves on Buybacks and Bitcoin Simultaneously

The company, trading under the ticker DJT on Nasdaq and NYSE Texas, described the buyback as part of a broader effort to return value to shareholders while maintaining flexibility for future growth.

Devin Nunes, CEO and chairman of Trump Media, said the decision reflects the board’s confidence in the company’s long-term direction.

“The Board took a vote of confidence in our company, our stock, and our strategic plans,” Nunes stated.

“Since Trump Media now has approximately $3 billion on its balance sheet, we have the flexibility to take actions like this, which support strong shareholder returns, as we continue exploring further strategic opportunities.”

While launching the buyback program, the company made clear that its previously announced Bitcoin strategy remains fully intact. In May, Trump Media revealed a $2.3 billion private placement deal designed to fund a long-term Bitcoin treasury plan.

The company confirmed Monday that the share repurchase will not interfere with its crypto strategy. Both initiatives are independently funded, according to the statement.

Trump Media has said it intends to model its Bitcoin treasury plans after MicroStrategy, a firm led by Michael Saylor that has accumulated over $14 billion in Bitcoin holdings.

The financial separation between the stock buyback and the crypto treasury gives the company room to act on both fronts. Trump Media noted that it may also consider buying back its outstanding convertible notes in the future, either through market purchases or private deals.

Trump Media has continued to expand its brand, which includes not only Truth Social but also the streaming service Truth+ and the fintech platform Truth.Fi.

The company did not disclose a specific timeline for the repurchase program but confirmed that all buybacks would be handled under standard market conditions.

With $3 billion in cash on hand, the company says it remains in a strong financial position to pursue multiple strategies simultaneously.

Trump Media Advances $2.3B Bitcoin Strategy With ETF Ambitions, SEC Filings, and New Partnerships

Following its $400 million stock buyback announcement, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) is doubling down on its digital asset push, with a $2.3 billion Bitcoin treasury plan now fully in motion.

On May 30, the company confirmed it had raised $2.44 billion through a private placement involving nearly 50 institutional investors. The raise included 55.9 million shares at $25.72 and $1 billion in zero-coupon convertible notes, with proceeds earmarked for Bitcoin acquisition and general operations.

According to Trump Media, the move indicates a long-term shift toward holding Bitcoin as a core treasury asset.

Just weeks later, on June 13, the U.S. SEC approved TMTG’s S-3 registration statement, a key step in launching its large-scale Bitcoin treasury strategy. The approval adds regulatory backing to one of the most ambitious crypto plays by a U.S. public company.

Then, on June 16, TMTG filed for a Truth Social Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF, seeking to list the fund on NYSE Arca. The proposed ETF would allocate 75% to Bitcoin and 25% to Ethereum, with Crypto.com acting as custodian and execution agent.

If approved, the fund could offer direct crypto exposure to retail and institutional investors under the Truth.Fi brand.

TMTG also announced plans to expand its ETF offerings into other sectors, including energy, via a partnership with Yorkville America Digital and Crypto.com.

Together, these moves position Trump Media as a growing force in crypto finance, blending political branding with Bitcoin-backed financial products at a scale few U.S. companies have attempted.

Coinbase delayed revealing data breach that may cost up to $400M, drops third-party vendor https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-delayed-revealing-data-breach-that-may-cost-up-to-400m-drops-third-party-vendor/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-delayed-revealing-data-breach-that-may-cost-up-to-400m-drops-third-party-vendor/#respond Tue, 03 Jun 2025 08:53:45 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-delayed-revealing-data-breach-that-may-cost-up-to-400m-drops-third-party-vendor/

Secret knowledge, sudden split: the crypto exchange faces mounting legal and regulatory heat for a four-month silence over a breach affecting at least 69,000 customers.

Coinbase was alerted as early as January 2025 that hackers had siphoned tens of thousands of customer records from one of its overseas support vendors, but the exchange waited until 14 May to notify regulators and users, according to internal emails reviewed by Reuters and interviews with three people briefed on the incident.

The revelation comes as Coinbase abruptly terminated its relationship with TaskUs, the Texas-based outsourcing firm whose India call centre staff were allegedly bribed to leak screenshots and KYC files. At least 69,461 customers’ names, addresses, partial Social Security numbers, and ticket histories were exposed. Coinbase has warned investors that the breach could cost $180 million to $400 million in remediation and potential claims.

Coinbase said it discovered evidence of contractor misconduct, moved quickly to cut access, and is enhancing controls across all third-party vendors.

TaskUs confirmed it fired more than 200 employees in Indore after Coinbase raised alarms in January, but it insisted it “immediately escalated” the issue to its client. A TaskUs spokesperson said the company is “cooperating with law enforcement agencies in India and the United States.”

A four-month disclosure gap

Under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s new cyber-incident rule, publicly traded companies must file an 8-K within four business days of determining an incident is material. Coinbase’s May filing noted “prior months” of unauthorised activity but did not specify the January alert.

Such inaction could be considered to be a textbook case of material non-compliance. The SEC may ask for confirmation as to why the clock didn’t start in January.

A securities-fraud class action filed Monday in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania alleges Coinbase “withheld adverse information” that would have moved its share price. A separate negligence suit targets TaskUs in Manhattan federal court on behalf of affected users.

Court filings describe a small criminal ring that paid support agents to photograph Coinbase’s screens with personal identifiers visible. By March, the scheme had widened, with stolen credentials sold on Telegram channels tied to “pig-butchering” crypto scams. On 11 May, the hackers, emboldened by their haul, emailed Coinbase demanding $20 million in exchange for deleting the data.

Coinbase refused, instead offering a $20 million bounty for information leading to arrests.

Why TaskUs matters

TaskUs, founded in 2008 and now valued at around $1.5 billion, counts Meta and DoorDash among its clients. Crypto exchanges like Coinbase have leaned on the firm to provide 24/7 customer support at a lower cost than U.S. hires through its 61,400 full-time staff. Security consultants warn that offshoring sensitive identity documents to low-wage environments creates the perfect storm for insider bribery.

Human-layer attacks are increasingly outpacing technical exploits, as buying an underpaid agent is far cheaper than breaking robust encryption.

The breach occurs as Coinbase and other crypto stakeholders wage a public campaign for lighter U.S. crypto rules. Rival exchanges Kraken and Gemini, who also use business-process outsourcing shops, will now rush to audit their own vendor controls, according to people familiar with those reviews.

Meanwhile, affected Coinbase customers report continued phishing attempts and SIM-swap attacks. The company has offered two years of identity-theft monitoring but has not committed to reimbursing any downstream crypto losses.

What’s next

  • Regulatory scrutiny – The SEC and Federal Trade Commission can assess potential disclosure-timing violations.
  • Discovery trove – Plaintiffs will seek January-dated board minutes that could show executives debated, then deferred, disclosure.
  • Vendor shake-up – Industry analysts expect fintechs to diversify away from single-provider support models and adopt screen-capture-blocking tools.

For Coinbase, the incident threatens balance-sheet costs and its narrative as the most compliant brand in crypto. Trust is the only hard currency an exchange has. Losing it, even for four months, can be fatal.

Bitcoin's Price Surge to $104K Liquidates Nearly $400M in Bearish BTC Bets, Opening Doors to Further Gains https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoins-price-surge-to-104k-liquidates-nearly-400m-in-bearish-btc-bets-opening-doors-to-further-gains/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoins-price-surge-to-104k-liquidates-nearly-400m-in-bearish-btc-bets-opening-doors-to-further-gains/#respond Fri, 09 May 2025 04:43:29 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoins-price-surge-to-104k-liquidates-nearly-400m-in-bearish-btc-bets-opening-doors-to-further-gains/

Bitcoin’s rapid price rally has caught traders off guard, triggering large liquidations of bearish short positions.

The leading cryptocurrency by market value has risen over 3% to $102,500 in the past 24 hours, with prices topping $104,000 at one point, the highest since Jan. 31. The bullish move came as President Donald Trump announced a comprehensive trade deal with the U.K. and the cumulative inflows into the spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) hit a record high above $40 billion.

The broader market rallied as well, with the total market cap of all coins excluding BTC surging by 10% to $1.14 trillion, the highest since March 6, according to data source TradingView.

That has led to substantial liquidations of bearish short positions, or leveraged plays aimed at profiting from price losses. A position is liquidated or forced closed when the trader’s account balance falls below the required margin level, often due to adverse price movements. This leads the exchange to close the position to prevent further losses automatically.

Nearly $400 million in BTC short positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours—marking the highest single-day total since at least November, according to Coinglass. Meanwhile, $22 million in long positions were also wiped out.

This significant imbalance indicates that leverage was heavily tilted towards the bearish side, and the rapid liquidation of shorts suggests there could be more upside potential for the market ahead.
