US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s rate cut hint has brought optimism, the Philippines is proposing a $1.1 billion Bitcoin reserve and Taiwan’s $72 million crypto crackdown has boosted regulatory trust.

Taiwan’s $72M Crypto Laundering Case Boosts Market Trust

Taiwanese prosecutors have charged 14 individuals in what they call the country’s largest crypto money laundering case, worth around $72 million. Led by Shi Qiren, the group used unregistered exchanges “CoinW” and “CoinThink Technology” to scam over 1,500 people.

They deposited funds into machines, converted to foreign currency, bought USDT and then moved the money out.

Authorities seized millions in cash, luxury cars, and Bitcoin holdings. Prosecutors are pushing for a $39 million asset seizure, while CoinW denied involvement.

While the case exposed risks in loosely regulated markets, investors view the crackdown as a step toward stronger regulatory trust—likely supportive for Bitcoin in the long run.

Powell’s Jackson Hole Signal Fuels Crypto Rally

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reignited optimism during his Jackson Hole speech, hinting at an upcoming rate cut. He noted that shifting conditions may “call for adjusting policy,” leading markets to assign a 90% probability of a September reduction.

Bitcoin surged from $112,000 to above $114,700 within minutes, with Ethereum jumping 7% to $4,600. Altcoins including Solana, Dogecoin, and XRP all posted 6%+ gains. Investors had sold heavily earlier in the week but Powell’s dovish comments turned sentiment around.

Rate cuts have historically driven liquidity driven rallies across crypto and traders expect this to be no different.

Philippines Eyes 10,000 BTC National Reserve

Another major development came from Manila. Lawmakers in the Philippines have introduced a bill to create a 10,000 BTC strategic reserve worth $1.1 billion at current prices. The plan would see the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas purchase 2,000 BTC annually for five years, holding the coins in trust for 20 years.

Representative Migz Villafuerte framed Bitcoin as “digital gold,” arguing it would strengthen financial security. If approved, the Philippines’ holdings would rival Bhutan’s 10,565 BTC and exceed El Salvador’s 6,276 BTC, a move seen as a strong bullish signal by traders betting on institutional adoption.

Bitcoin Price Prediction – Technical Outlook

The short-term Bitcoin price prediction seems neutral as BTC’s chart below is shaping into a battleground between buyers and sellers.

After sliding into a descending channel in mid-August, BTC has bounced sharply from $112,000 support, reclaiming the 50-period EMA at $115,578. Price briefly tested $117,000, marking an attempt to break the channel’s upper boundary.

A completed harmonic pattern between $124,450 and $105,150 underscores the recent swings. Candlestick action near support produced a bullish hammer, followed by green candles that could evolve into a three white soldiers formation if momentum sustains. RSI has recovered to 55, while MACD shows a bullish crossover with a widening histogram—both reinforcing a constructive outlook.

If Bitcoin clears $117,000 and sustains above $119,000, upside targets emerge at $121,800 and $124,400. A breakout would likely push to $127,500 and possibly $130,000 in the coming months. On the downside $113,500 and $112,000 are key supports.

BTC Potential Trade Setup

A cautious entry above $116,200 with a stop under $112,000 aligns risk and reward. If confirmed BTC could rally to $124,400 and then $130,000 as bullish momentum builds into 2025.

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake unveiled the “Lean Ethereum” proposal on July 31 that reframes the base layer around the imperatives of survivability against nation-state and quantum threats and orders-of-magnitude performance gains without sacrificing decentralization.

The new guidelines were dubbed “fort mode” and “beast mode,” respectively.

Published on the Ethereum Foundation blog, the vision argued that the network can simultaneously harden security and radically scale by anchoring the mainnet in hash-based cryptography and restructuring all three protocol sublayers, which are consensus, data, and execution.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Drake recently addressed the concept during an ETH-focused event in Berlin.

Fort mode and beast mode

Drake’s security thesis highlights that Ethereum must run for decades, even centuries, under adversarial conditions. 

According to the roadmap, “if the internet is up, Ethereum is up” is the goal. On performance, Lean Ethereum targets roughly 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) on mainnet via aggressive vertical scaling and approximately 1 million TPS on layer-2 (L2) blockchains via expansive horizontal scaling. 

He added that enabling “moon-math” is no longer aspirational, suggesting real-time zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs) for execution and data availability sampling (DAS) for data throughput. 

A complementary usability aim is full-chain verification on consumer devices, such as browsers, phones, and wallets.

Three “lean” sublayers

Lean Ethereum proposes coordinated upgrades across three different layers. The first is “Lean consensus,” or Beacon Chain 2.0, focused on hardening the Beacon Chain for maximum security and decentralization, with near-instant finality measured in seconds.

Lean data (Blobs 2.0) is the second layer. The goal is to enable post-quantum “blobs” with granular sizing to preserve a calldata-like developer experience while boosting throughput.

Lastly, Lean execution (EVM 2.0) consists of a minimal, SNARK-friendly instruction set that preserves EVM compatibility and network effects but accelerates proving and verification.

Together, these changes aim to deliver “performance abundance” under non-negotiable continuity and simplicity constraints.

Hash-based crypto as the standard fabric

Lean Ethereum treats the hash function as the fundamental primitive across layers. Aggregate signatures in consensus supplanting Boneh-Lynn-Shacham (BLS), hash-based commitments replacing Kate, Zaverucha, and Goldberg (KZG) in the data layer, and hash-centric zkVMs streamlining execution verification. 

The approach is designed to simultaneously future-proof against quantum adversaries while harmonizing with the rapid rise of SNARKs across the stack.

Drake said that Lean Ethereum is as much an engineering aesthetic as a roadmap. The concept is based on minimal modules, encapsulated complexity, formal verification, and provable security and optimality. 

The emphasis on “lean craft” seeks to prune legacy complexity while standardizing on primitives that are easier to reason and verify.

A routine $10,000 prediction market on Polymarket covering Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race erupted into a dispute in UMA’s history after the oracle rejected an early settlement proposal, despite it being accurate. 

As reported by the X user known as Domer on July 24, the clash has revived questions about how UMA’s optimistic‑oracle process balances speed, clarity, and fairness.

How a $10k market became a $60k fight

When the checkered flag fell at 6:58 p.m. ET, Denny Hamlin crossed the line first and was later confirmed as the winner following NASCAR’s post‑race inspection. 

One minute after the finish, a veteran Polymarket trader, known as “GeopoliticsWizard,” posted 40 settlement proposals to UMA, one for each driver contract, paying the required 750 USDC bond on each. 

Ninety minutes later, other users challenged every proposal, arguing the submitter had not waited for inspection. Under UMA’s rules, each dispute also required a 750 USDC bond.

With 40 proposals and 40 disputes, total staking ballooned to $60,000, six times the underlying market size. The ultimate split is predetermined: the winning side collects its 40 bonds ($40,000) while UMA keeps the remaining $20,000 as protocol revenue.

UMA’s published documentation does not require proposers to wait for inspections. Instead, it directs them to use an “authoritative public source.” 

NASCAR’s leaderboard showed no caveats or asterisks. Even so, on-chain voters judged the submissions “Too Early,” siding unanimously with the disputers. The vote came after NASCAR confirmed Hamlin’s win at 8:26 p.m., and disputes were lodged at 8:27 p.m.

The ruling wiped out roughly $30,000 in net value for the proposer, turning a previously profitable account into a negative one, according to posts from Domer. 

How UMA works

UMA uses a three‑step “propose–dispute–vote” loop. Anyone may submit a settlement answer with a bond. If unchallenged during a short liveness window, the answer becomes final. 

A challenger can post an equal bond to force a token‑holder vote. The majority receives the combined bonds, while the minority forfeits theirs. 

The model is designed to be fast and decentralized, yet the NASCAR case shows that costs can dwarf a market’s notional value when disputes escalate.

Earlier in July, UMA faced backlash over a $200 million Polymarket contract on whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would appear in a “suit.” 

After initially ruling “Yes,” UMA reversed course following challenges about what qualifies as a suit, exposing how ambiguous wording can grind the oracle to a halt. 

Days later, a separate Major League Baseball market erroneously paid out to the wrong team. UMA stated that a technical glitch and lack of dispute caused the mistake and promised refunds.

The bigger picture

In Domer’s view, the NASCAR episode lays bare a deeper problem: UMA’s voting base has shrunk to a small circle of “trusted” regulars whose financial incentives often align with disputers, rather than with neutral accuracy. 

When Polymarket itself stays neutral, as it did here, UMA leans on these insiders for guidance, and “they comply.”

He added:

“The voting system is more centralized than ever, with a community more dormant than ever […] The group that disputed spammed the Discord heavily, so it had to be ‘Too Early’, and UMA voters did as they were told.”

Domer concluded that such dynamics turn legitimate traders into collateral damage.

Arthur Hayes, Chief Investment Officer at Maelstrom and former BitMEX CEO, has shared a highly optimistic outlook for Ethereum (ETH), predicting that the digital asset could reach a new all-time high of $10,000 by the end of the year.

In a July 23 blog post, Hayes described ETH as “the most hated large-cap crypto,” likening its current sentiment to Solana following FTX’s collapse in 2022 before its meteoric rise from $7 to $280.

Hayes questioned:

“[NFTs are] an internet status game. The whole world economy outside of food and energy production is a giant status game, why would the internet society be any different?”

This perspective echoes comments from Yat Siu, chairman of Animoca Brands, who compares NFTs to luxury items like Rolex watches or Birkin bags. According to Siu, people purchase these items mainly due to their cultural symbols of identity and belonging rather than their functionality.

CryptoPunks, launched in 2017 as one of the first NFT projects on Ethereum, have gained legendary status in the digital art world.

At the peak of the market in 2021, the collection’s floor price was worth an average of 125 ETH, but its value fell significantly during the market winter to a low of 21 ETH.

However, with the NFT space enjoying some form of renaissance lately, CryptoPunks’ value has surged in the past week by over 20% to 48 ETH, which equates to $177,000.

Eric Jackson of EMJ Capital points to a number of pending changes that aren’t already priced in, even with Ethereum’s latest gains.

That means the true bull run hasn’t started yet, at least for $ETH.

Most important of all the coming changes is the pending $ETH ETF approval. While the crypto world waits for the SEC to approve spot $ETH ETFs with staking and yield generation offerings, traditional spot $ETH ETFS marked over a week of positive inflows.

What would make yield-bearing crypto ETFs such a big deal? In part, the enhanced ETFs would be a powerful alternative to the currently more popular Bitcoin ETFs.

Jackson sees the next leg of Ethereum’s rally as coming from staking-enabled ETFs, which may launch by October 2025. A staking ETF offering 3.5% yield on top of price appreciation could create a supply crunch and drive $ETH demand to unprecedented levels, as Jackson pointed out.

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich has addressed growing concerns from shareholders over the company’s declining stock price, reaffirming the firm’s long-term strategy centered around Bitcoin (BTC) accumulation and value creation.

In a message posted Tuesday on X, Gerovich emphasized that the Japanese investment firm is committed to building lasting corporate value, rather than chasing short-term stock price movements.

Despite Stock Slide, Metaplanet CEO Stands Firm on Bitcoin Accumulation Plan

Metaplanet’s stock, listed in Tokyo, has fallen 15.8% over the past month and is down 7.6% year-to-date.

The recent dip follows a broader cooling in Bitcoin proxy stocks, including MicroStrategy, despite Bitcoin itself holding gains in 2025.

Still, Metaplanet’s stock remains up over 860% since it first launched its Bitcoin treasury strategy in April 2024.

Gerovich pinpointed that short-term fluctuations in stock price don’t necessarily reflect the company’s performance.

“We are steadily executing on a clear strategy as a Bitcoin treasury company, aiming to become one of the most valuable companies in the world in the future, and we are demonstrating our progress with clear KPIs,” he said.

Last week, Metaplanet announced the purchase of 330 BTC, worth around $28 million, bringing its total holdings to 4,855 BTC.

The firm remains on track to meet its goal of acquiring 10,000 BTC by the end of the year, despite broader market uncertainties and macroeconomic pressures.

At current market value, its BTC holdings are worth approximately $430 million, making it the largest corporate Bitcoin holder in Asia and the tenth largest globally.

According to Gerovich, the company’s growth is not only in assets but also in investor interest. “We’ve seen about a sevenfold increase in shareholders,” he said, citing growing institutional interest and inclusion in ETFs and indexes.

Metaplanet’s BTC Yield Hits 119%, Far Surpassing Quarterly Target

Metaplanet evaluates its performance using a metric called BTC Yield, which measures the change in the ratio of total Bitcoin held to fully diluted shares outstanding. Year-to-date, the firm’s BTC Yield stands at 119.3%, well above its quarterly target of 35%.

In one example, Metaplanet used cash-secured put options to acquire $67.9 million worth of Bitcoin with only $62.7 million in capital. Overall, the firm claims to have generated an additional 2,174 BTC through such methods.

“These are not future ‘hopes,’ but results that have already been achieved,” Gerovich said, noting that he himself is a major shareholder and thus closely aligned with the interests of other investors.

He added, “That is why I always prioritize shareholder interests in all my decisions. Our goal is to maximize the value of our shares and the amount of bitcoin held per share, creating value in the long term.”

While acknowledging that current market sentiment may not reflect the company’s fundamentals, Gerovich remains confident.

“Stock prices will not necessarily reflect these results in the short term, but we are confident that over the medium to long term they will converge to fundamentals,” he said. He ended by saying, “We’re just getting started.”
