New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the creation of the city’s Digital Assets and Blockchain Division to ramp up cryptocurrency efforts in the final months of his term.
In a Tuesday notice from the mayor’s office, Adams said he used an executive order under his authority to create the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology. Moises Rendon, who has served as New York City’s digital asset and blockchain policy advisor since April 2024, will head the newly created firm.
“Our city has always been a hub of innovation, embracing tomorrow’s technology today,” Adams said. “The age of digital assets is here, and we have an opportunity to grow our economy, attract world-class talent, expand opportunity for underbanked communities, and make government easier to use.”

Adams rose to prominence to many in the crypto industry when he offered to receive his first three paychecks in Bitcoin (BTC) while running for mayor in 2021. During his time as mayor, he established a digital advisory committee, called for the city to create BTC-backed bonds, and criticized New York City’s BitLicense program as being too strict.
The New York mayor announced in September that he would not run for re-election, having initially campaigned as a Democrat and then as an independent. The current term ends on January 1, 2026.
This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
